“David left school at 15 and began work as a gas fitter, developing a passion for drama after seeing classic 1960s British films such as Billy Liar, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, and A Taste of Honey.

“They were working-class kitchen-sink dramas about escape and that was something I wanted to do,” David recalls.

“I didn’t want to be a gas fitter and I didn’t want to stay in Loughborough. Those films made me feel there was a place for a working-class, Northern actor.”

After six years as a gas fitter he moved to London, studying drama at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He worked in the theatre for four years before landing his first TV role in Z Cars.”

  1. My favourite characters on Coronation Street have always been the Baldwins, any one of them. Since there are no more then I guess that Steve would be No.1 for me. Ken, I believe, is the longest-serving actor on Corrie.

    Hi Stan,

Ken is the longest running character in television history. He’s going to make it to 50 years on the show soon too!
