Local Federal NDP to Hold Tommy Douglas Dinner with M.P. Peter Stoffer as Guest Speaker

Cornwall ON – Darlene Jalbert , President of the Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry Federal NDP riding association, has announced that the local federal NDP riding association will be holding their Tommy Douglas fundraiser dinner on Thursday, April 29 at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club, County Rd. 2, East, Cornwall.  Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m.

Jalbert stated:

“We are very pleased that Peter Stoffer, M.P. for Sackville-Eastern Shore in Nova Scotia  and NDP Veterans Affairs critic, will be the guest speaker at the Tommy Douglas dinner.”

Jalbert said that Stoffer has proven to be a very popular and effective Member of Parliament since his first election in 1997.

“Peter  is well  known for his efforts to make Parliament work for all Canadians.  He is referred to as the King of the PMBs for his introduction of private member’s bills based on suggestions made by his constituents and people whom he meets through his work on the veterans affairs, fisheries, and industry committees.”

Last year, Stoffer introduced 24 private member’s bills, more than any other M.P.  His bills included acts to remove the goods and services tax from the cost of funerals, to prevent the distribution of child pornography on the internet, to amend the Canadian Bill of Rights to include a right to housing, to cancel a military pension claw-back, to extend a personal tax credit to taxpayers with a live-in relative who is 65 or older or has a mental or physical infirmity, and to make fees related to physical activities and amateur sport tax-deductible.

Jalbert further explained: “This will be an excellent opportunity for local residents to learn more about NDP policies and initiatives to save and create jobs, to extend Employment Insurance, to improve pensions, to enhance public health care and education, and to improve the Veterans Charter.”

Everyone is invited to attend the Tommy Douglas dinner.

Tickets for the Tommy Douglas dinner are available by calling Brian Lynch at 613-933-8353 or Darlene Jalbert at 613-931-1729.
