Residents of Akwesasne get their Own Customs Lane Back as of April 6,2010 – Cornwall Ontario

Cornwall ON – The Border crossing in Cornwall as of April 6th will have a lane available to residents of Akwesasne to expedite traffic loads.

Effective April 6, 2010, the Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) interim port of entry in the City of Cornwall will have a dedicated lane for domestic travellers arriving from Cornwall Island (Kawehnoke).

Travellers will be notified of this improvement to make domestic travel easier through the CBSA Web site, and a handout provided by CBSA officers at the interim port of entry in the City of Cornwall. Signage promoting the use of this lane will be in place shortly.

This dedicated lane will be available to domestic travellers from Cornwall Island (Kawehnoke) only. Travellers entering Canada from the United States must continue to report directly to the interim port of entry in the City of Cornwall in accordance with the terms of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Customs Act. This includes individuals who have Cornwall Island (Kawehnoke) as their destination.

Persons who fail to present themselves to the CBSA once entering Canada from the United States will continue to be subject to enforcement action. Travellers from the United States are reminded to have proper identification, receipts and any other relevant documents readily available upon their arrival at the interim port of entry.

This new dedicated lane for domestic travellers to the City of Cornwall from Cornwall Island (Kawehnoke) demonstrates the CBSA’s ongoing commitment to constructive action to facilitate improved travel until a long-term solution can be found. The CBSA continues to work towards a solution that advances the best interests of the community.

This looks like the first steps to moving the temporary CBSA station at the foot of the bridge on Brookdale avenue in Cornwall Ontario back to the Island.    You should be hearing more announcements as we get closer to the Federal election.

  1. I’m a little confused by this. Nowhere does it state where the extra lane is going to be. Is it actually at the foot of the bridge, or is it in the island itself? It only makes sense if it is in the island, since it won’t save anyone any time otherwise. So please, anyone who can clarify, please do.

  2. Not many informed people, it seems. It’s certainly a legit question.

  3. The writer of the article seems to think it will be on the Island, but I see nothing to confirm that. I also recieved the handout at hte border, and it also ws confusing. I guess we wait til the 6 th and see what happens then.

  4. “interim port of entry in the City of Cornwall”…interim/temporary….it will be at the temporary port in Cornwall at the foot of the bridge….
