PEOPLE AND KITE FESTIVAL OF THE PARADE OF NATIONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENTALLY CHALLENGED – SEPTEMBER 17 & 18, 2011

Cornwall ON – The most spectacular cultural event in Cornwall

PURPOSE

  • a celebration of  our ancestral origins;
  • a  promotion of our local artists, artisans  performers, writers; and
  • an introduction of local businesses, profit and non-profit organizations and groups of all kinds.
  • a fundraiser  for a  “Light in the Tunnel”  Program for the developmentally challenged and those with special needs;
  • an opportunity to thank everyone for what they do for our community;
  • a  celebration of  our personal accomplishments no matter the size;

ACTIVITIES

Saturday 17th September

  • Historical parade – start at 10:30 am at St Lawrence College

Showcasing the flags of the ancestral genetic make up of the people of Akwesasne, Cornwall and Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SD&G), including the flags of countries that no longer exist

Note: The parade is not a venue for political or religious propaganda.

  • Float & Vehicles Contests

Registration fee: Float $5.00; car, van, truck, motorcycle, bicycle, wheelchair – $2.00.
One trophy for each category.
Judging: Saturday, September 17th, at 9:30 am, at St Lawrence College,

  • 3 Categories Contests: Aboriginal and Traditional Dress-includes clothing worn by cultural/ethnic groups;  Regalia and National Outfits- includes clothing identified with nationality (insignia, crests, symbols…); Clown Costumes (humorous)

Registration fee:  $2.00, 13 up; $1.00 kids up to 12.
Judging: Saturday, September 17th, at 9:30 am, at St Lawrence College

  • Food Art Contest

Registration fee: Amateur category: $2.00, age 13 up; $1.00, kids up to 12; $5.00. professional category

Judging: 3:00 pm, in Lamoureux Park

  • Entertainment by local artists from 12:00 to 9:00 pm in Lamoureux Park.
  • Gigantic Trade Show from 11:00 noon to 9:00 pm, in Lamoureux Park.
  • Silent Auction and raffles of all kinds, in Lamoureux Park
  • Arts and crafts for kids, in Lamoureux Park

Sunday 18th September

  • Kite flying contest

Registration fee: $2.00 age16 and up; $1:00 kids up to 15.  from 10 a.m. to 3:00 pm, at the Bowl near the RCAF Association Wing 424, 240 Water Street West, Cornwall, Ontario
Judging: all day

  • Photography Contest: black and white and color

Registration fee: Amateur category: $2.00 age 13 and up; $1.00 kids up to 12; $5.00 professional category. You have until noon, on September 18th, to register. Maximum or two (2) entries.

Judging:  Sunday 18th September at 2:30 pm, in Lamoureux Park.

  • Entertainment by local artists from 12:00 to 6:00 pm, in Lamoureux Park.
  • Gigantic Trade Show from 11:00 noon to 6:00 pm, in Lamoureux Park.

2011 Theme: National Dress and Outfits of the World Float & Vehicles Contests

Registration fee: Float $5.00; car, van, truck, motorcycle, bicycle, wheelchair – $2.00. One trophy for each category.
Floats will be judged on Saturday, September 17th, at 9:30 am, at St Lawrence College, corner of Belmont Street and Montreal Road, Cornwall, Ontario. People do not need to be on the float at the time of the judging. The judges will be on Montreal Road during the parade to complete the evaluation.

Judging will start at 9:30 am near the Parade of Nations’ table. One trophy for each category (10 trophies).

Judging criteria:

    1. Workmanship (50 points)

      • How labour-intensive is the costume?

      • Costume originality

      • Authenticity – Reflective of a culture/reflective of an emotion (clown costume)

      • Accessories including hats, gloves, shoes

      • Jewellery originality

    2. Showmanship and Attitude (50 points)

      • Is this person comfortable enough to “show off” the costume (not awkwardly re-positioning costume every few minutes)?

      • Does the person enjoy modeling the costume?

      • Are they proud of the work?

      • Did the person make extra accents to make the costume “their own”?

      • Does the costume stand out?

Photography Contest

      Registration fee: Amateur category: $2.00 age 13 and up; $1.00 kids up to 12; $5.00 professional category.

You can have two (2) entries per category; they will be displayed on boards. We put clear material in front of the photos so no one touches them. For info visit

Judging criteria: Each photo will be given a mark out of 10.

      1. Subject Matter – Content maximum of 2.5 points.

        • Is it interesting?

        • Is it well executed?

      2. Composition maximum of 2.5 points

        • Is the eye lead through the image and kept occupied in the image?

        • Is the image balanced?

      3. Impact maximum of 5 points.

        • Does the image “speak to me”?

Note: This is where most photos win or fail because if it doesn’t grab the judges’ attention; all the craftsmanship demonstrated in terms of production, subject matter or superb composition is not going to save it.

Food Art Contest

          Food art will be judged on Saturday, 17th September at 3:00 pm, in Lamoureux Park. Registration fee: Amateur category: $2.00, age 13 up; $1.00, kids up to 12; $5.00, professional category. One trophy per category.  For info send an email to

        Note: Items such as straws and toothpicks can be used as support.

SCHOOL PARTICIPATION CONTEST

        We encourage the schools to bring their banners, which will make it easier for students to regroup and provide visibility for your school.
        There is one trophy to for each of the following categories and the school in a category with the most participants wins:

        • Speciality Purpose School/ Training Centre – Akwesasne, Cornwall, and SD&G

        • Elementary Schools – Cornwall

        • Elementary Schools – Akwesasne and SD&G

        • Secondary Schools/College – Cornwall

        • Secondary Schools/College – Akwesasne and SD&G

TOWSHIP  PARTICIPATION CONTEST

        The municipality with the most participants wins a trophy.

TRADE SHOW – SPACE DECORATION CONTEST

        The best decorated space representing a country(ies) wins a trophy.
