Cornwall Junior Weightlifter Qualifies for Nationals! Congrats to Kelly McGillis – December 5, 2011

 

CFN – The Ontario Provincial Junior Weightlifting Championship was held this weekend in Toronto and an athlete from Cornwall`s Caveman Strong gym has qualified for the Nationals.

 

Fifteen year old Kelly McGillis finished in second place in her weight category which solidified her spot on the Ontario team.  McGillis will compete at the Ontario Junior National competition in January 2012 in Toronto.  The competition lifts include the snatch and the clean and jerk.

 

Caveman Strong Owner and Head Coach Tyler Touchette says “Kelly has been seriously lifting since this past July and her future in this sport is very bright”.

 

Two other athletes from Caveman Strong also competed over the weekend including 12 year old Cameron Filion (3rd place finish) and 12 year old Kwaki Thompson.  Caveman Strong is part of a cluster of gyms under the banner School of Champions.

 

Touchette says “I hope this is just the beginning of more recognition for this sport, not just in Cornwall, but Canada.  We (Caveman Strong) are bringing this sport to our local high schools in an effort to grow it in this region.”
