CFN – Democracy is a term that gets bandied around frequently. It’s big in the news right now. Turkey, Egypty, the US.
It’s talked about in Canada too.
After all, what really is a Democracy? What does it mean to you? What is so special about Democracy that so many have died fighting for it.
During WWII it was pretty much clear. You had Nazi style Fascism on one side and Jo Stalin’s brand of Communism on the other.
Most of the world said blech to both of those and the forces of Democracy fought and succeeded.
Democracy has spread all over the world since; but it seems to be embraced least in the countries that did their best to spread it.
- Argentina , Australia, Brazil, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Luxembourg, Nauru, Peru, Singapore, and Uruguay all have compulsory voting. IE all adults must vote.
Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens participate equally—either directly or through elected representatives—in the proposal, development, and creation of laws. It encompasses social, economic and cultural conditions that enable the free and equal practice of political self-determination.
Of course there are people that will say that how can people vote properly or clearly if they don’t know the issues. Having worked in media now for nearly five years I’m stunned at what little I’ve seen. How many stories have been whitewashed by media for government or corporate interests?
Independent media if successful is either bought out by one of the chains or stomped to death.
I get chastised by some armchair anarchists as I call them for not covering larger more National and International stories because I do feel that Democracy begins at home. How many Federal or Provincial leaders here in Canada started at City Council like the late Jack Layton for example?
In today’s world it all comes down to accountability and transparency. They simply don’t really exist any longer. It’s scary. Look at the punitive damage inflicted on Whistleblowers from the largest platform like the recent Edward Snowden NSA case to our own Deputy Fire Chief Whistleblowing at City Hall. Two completely different circumstances but equally punitive and at the end of the day anything that brings the truth to light cannot be a bad thing.
Are we humans made of sugar that the truth would melt us down? How can we vote or even have an opinion on anything if we don’t know the truth?
When I started CFN I had no desire to be a media martyr. I had no agenda other than trying to help my community and build an alternative. The fact that a near one man independent could draw more than four times the traffic as a National shows that there was a need; but at what price?
Our own battle is ongoing. We have demanded to speak before our city council after they slurred our company with patently false statements knowingly put into a city policy that essentially was a punitive and petty action taken on in many people’s opinions on behalf of some of the corporate larger media. 13.3.2 Presentations – time limit
Council shall hear any presentation for information purposes only, and presentations shall be limited to a maximum of ten (10) minutes.
Here is the language where the city can refuse;
13.8 Delegation – deemed – inappropriate for Council
When it is deemed inappropriate that a delegation address Council, the Clerk shall so notify the delegation and Council with a supporting explanation. Such written explanation shall be delivered with the Agenda and the Council, if it so wishes to hear the delegation, shall, by two-thirds vote of the Council Members in attendance, introduce a motion to suspend the rules to allow the delegation to be heard.
The funny thing is that no clear note has been given as to why the request was rejected again.

As discussed with Norm and explained last time, your presentation does not fit the criteria from an administrative perspective. However, you have 2 options:
You can gather signatures for a petition, submit the petition to me to present to Council, and Council will decide;
The other option is to ask Council to suspend the rules within the procedural by-law and allow you to be heard. This requires the support of 2/3 of Council.
In your request, below, you state that there is nothing inappropriate about your rebuttal. The issue is that a rebuttal does not qualify as a reason to present. I have copied and pasted your request and my previous response, with the sections of the procedural by-law below:
(There is nothing inappropriate about CFN wishing to rebut the slur in your report. We are not asking for any remedy or apology. We simply want to rebut the information in the same forum that it was released by council.

I know in the big world picture this is but a tiny speck of an example. but Democracy starts at home and this is, my home.
We all need to practice our Democracy more because when we don’t our rights get trampled. Lives are lost and sometimes we don’t even realize what’s actually happened until it’s far too late.
Holding a politician or corporate thug responsible, even in the manner they occasionally do in China simply cannot fix that damage caused.

When more people start realizing that govwrnments in general from the local council to the United Nations are a problem, democratic mob rule takes over. Those middle eastern spring revolutions are a leading indicator of things to come right here in our home town, province and nation. The future is undetermined.
Darcy as long as people continue to live in an entitlement frame of mind and want to rule, things will only get worse.
Just look at the Middle East. The push for power, entitlements and hatred leads to war.
In a democratic country, like Canada for example, we elect our representatives. Good, bad or indifferent we have to live with the choices we make, that is until we decide we had enough, at which time we vote them out.
Democracy is having the choice and freedom to do just that. By trying to alter the meaning of democracy and trying to change the rules as we go along can be disastrous for any country. It only takes one small group of troublemakers, who will never be happy no matter what to do just that.
We are a peaceful nation, voted #1 by 27,000 people from the G8 summit, something we should be proud of.
Being elected means you are supposed to represent the will of the people. It doesn’t mean you can do whatever the hell you want until the next election. A lot of harm can be done in 4 years and there has to be a venue where politicians can be held to task for their mean spirited wrong doings and personal agendas.
That is the role of the media. If the media is suppressed then there is no accountability and it creates an unchecked environment of self-entitlement and personal gain, either financially or of power and influence.

That was the reasoning used by the city to justify their refusal to purchase ad space.
They came to their conclusions using guidelines and general consensus and a democratic vote among themselves.
How is this a bad thing?
Well John perhaps it’s because our comment section isn’t “often” filled with profanity or vicious personal attacks. It’s not about where they advertise. It’s about stating information that the author of the report and his managers knew to not be true and then the former CAO’s good friend refusing to allow the truth to be presented in the same forum that the lie was slung. Simple as that.
The people “or should I say sheeple” of the far west are much too chicken to stand up for themselves like what the Middle Eastern countries and even Europe does to stand up to their politicians and say that they had enough. The sheeple of the far west of Canada and the US just take everything lying down and ask for more abuse from their governance.
Look at Italy where their former PM is gone to prison for hiring underage prostitution. Look at Cornwall with all the sexual abuse and they all got away. That former PM of Italy is a mafia man and mighty highly placed and he is gone away for seven years.
In Egypt and Syria and beyond the people will not accept their governments to walk on them or do anything that they don’t want them to do, etc. Those are a people whether we agree with them or not. Those are a people who are mighty awake.
Jamie I knew very well that all the signatures that you can muster up will not change the minds of Bare Ass and company. Cornwall stayed well behind all other towns because of the clique that ran it and it will continue to be behind as long as the “sheeple” do not change their own ways. You are the first to expose the dirty antics besides Perry Dunlop and Bare Ass and his clique do not want their dirty laundry exposed. Whether it would be you or someone else that town will never change.

Yes we have elected officials -do they listen to the population?

Jules there’s a difference between an elected official and paid staff such as the clerk. They have to answer. The public has a right to make sure that our staff are doing their job correctly. Positions like the clerk of a city should not be partisan.

Given your denial, all the clauses for regs should be written as one statement:

Jamie you are absolutely correct all the way in what you said. The clerk like that Gelinas Labelle is supposed to be neutral but there is so much dirty, underhanded garbage that goes around and Cornwall is full of it.
I left Cornwall for good reasons and the first time was back in the 70’s when things were thriving compared to today. I saw the cliques in those days but today under Bare Ass Kilger it is a great deal worse. I saw that picture on Cornwall Corruption and yes it is corrupted to the hilt.
Jamie there are things that I long for Cornwall and other things like this are mighty disgusting to see and the people are suffering under this system. Many will not admit to it and stay in a corner and expect that others will come along and get them out of their misery. The people do not know is that they have to learn to stand up for themselves and fight the dirty clique.
I went to school with some very good people from very good backgrounds and the journalist in Toronto Robert Fisher is Carla’s brother and a mighty good family. Carl Fisher the father worked at CJSS and used to tell the news. I have known many good families in past years and many left and others died. Cornwall should be mighty proud of all the good people that once lived there. We see too many of the worst kind these days. Cornwall has a prize with you down there and should be mighty proud to have you and that comes from my heart and mind Jamie. You tell the truth to the people and it is up to them to do something about it.
Stella the Middle East is a great deal more dangerous than what you are hearing about. My husband reads his papers every day as well as we have programs that come from there and it is a great deal more frightening and dangerous than what you read about in our Canadian news. If the people here in Canada knew what is really going on they would be literally mighty sick.
The only real civilized country in the Middle East is Israel. Yes they have their problems and their government is kind of nuts at times but they have to be to live near such crazies.
I don’t know if you heard about what happened in Brazil about a man being decapitated because of some soccer match. My daughter is in shock and something happened in Lebanon as well in a soccer game – I think it was someone shot according to my husband. Say thank you to the Good Lord that you live in Canada.
We do have to fight for our rights but not to go as extreme as they do – they are really nuts to the core. There are good things there as well but they go way too far.
Ted Harmen I didn’t say about sexual abuse in council but about what went on with the Catholic church, doctors, lawyers, social workers, etc. when Perry Dunlop was in town. So many were protected and got away with it when they were guilty. What I spoke about had nothing to do with council – not that I am aware of unless something went on that I missed.

Stellabystarlight was right on one thing that being that at the municipal level we vote for a “whoever” however the rest of her information she must have made up as she went along. At the provincial and federal level we do not vote for “whoever” we instead vote for a political party candidate in a riding system. The individual parties elect their leader not the “majority vote”. A political party can win the popular vote but lose the election simply because we vote on a riding basis and not a leadership basis. Probably best not to tackle the middle east situation best left to the informed and educated. ONLY PART OF A KNUCKLE UP.

NO ONE has ever or will ever be all things to all people. To even expect that would be naïve on your part.
No-one running for office should make ANY specific `to do` promises except to be truthful and honest. Further to that, hardworking for the betterment of the entire community, to the best of his/her ability.
Prior history of said persons is all we need to know of their ability to follow through with these credentials. Of course, public speaking and a decent education would be an asset, as well of course would be English, with compatible french(no capital on the word french as it is that way in the language/culture). We must respect the languages!
Were you aware that we are now second class citizens in our own country?
Prime example is that our `Christian~ ministers in our military are REQUIRED to marry same sex couples, yet an Iman is given a pass.

I almost feel sorry for her (illness); she believes her own lies! She become so habitual at it that she has forgotten much of what she has written in the past and contradicts them in the future ;truly pathological …so the truth becomes more warped much like her PERSONALITY.

So well said but I took particular interest in these statement;

“No-one running for office should make ANY specific `to do` promises except to be truthful and honest. Further to that, hardworking for the betterment of the entire community, to the best of his/her ability.”
Yes no party will be all things !I would like to see politicians not promise to what they know they cannot accomplish .
We cant keep going on promising more perks and benefits we can no longer afford,but the intent is to bribe people to vote for their particular party .
Honesty is an nonviable word in politics ;Please don’t try to bribe our fellow voters ,how about tackling those tougher issues most politicians avoid then you would get my respect.
Time to get off the fence and address issues ,change be it positive always has a price to pay by sometimes offending a few get over it be decisive .
Diddlyscwatt you are right in what you said all the way including what you said about we Christians are now classified at second class citizens. I see it all around me every day here in Ottawa and we Christians are becoming a minority. Soon the world will be Islamic or you would be hunted and killed for what you believe in and I can assure you that is the truth.
The former Robbie’s Spaghetti house on Walkley Road here in Ottawa is not a mosque of all things. When I told that to my husband he was sickened. This happened not too long ago.
People better wake up and know what is going on. Just today I read on yahoo.ca that David Sazzouki was complaining about our Canadian immigration and in a way he is right because the kind of people that are let in is a total disgrace. The kind of people that are being let in is going to bring down our society even further. You have no idea of the mentality of the people being let in compared to our own people and if you did you would not allow what is coming. Canada is no longer a Christian-Judeo country anymore at all but you might as well call it a hokus pocus type of a country that has no more faith in God or good morals.
Just this morning including yesterday my husband was telling me about a case back in his country about a man who beat up his wife who was only 30 years old and they have 5 kids. The parents of the woman want the doctor to perform an autopsy so as to see the cause of death so as they can lock up the husband. A lot of these people do beat their wives and abuse them and many women are only young teenagers marrying these men and are discarded so as they can divorce and marry other women. If this Sharia Law was established here in Canada a man could have many wives (those who are Islamic that is) and women would be thrown out on the streets along with the children and then you would have a problem beyond comprehension and there would be extreme misery. People better know what is going on and not to let such a thing happen at all or else people will pay a consequence beyond belief.

The difficulty is that they use stealth methodology to under mine our society.
Gradually and subliminally their ideals circumvent ours.
A prime example are taking advantage of the Catholic church by ‘pretending’ to share similarities then BAM, before you know it they have special prayer rooms, times and can wear their garb. Now if a Christian wanted to say the Lords Prayer or wear their necklaces or a catholic wanted to use their prayer beads, all hell would break loose from them and others of our so called ‘secular’ society would be against it……basically our own people……yet WE are the ones who have to, by law show OUR tolerances. What kind of suckers are we.
At least they have not brought in the Sharia Law as our Constitution……but they keep trying.
If they ever do succeed, two persons now in jail for ‘honour killings’ in Kingston would be released and forgiven by our own stupid people. One of those killed was told to have been a cousin, but really was a second wife. See. they find their ways to have multiple wives even in Canada. Bigotry is really what it is.
We have been second class citizens for a few more years than we realize now, in their view as they receive our welfare and consider it payment because they have conquered us without a bullet being fired or a sword being used. It’s called a toll or tax on their subjects. So wrong isn’t it…….yet we the suckers allow it to keep the peace….free money.
Their is so much more.
Target is owned by them and the head office is in France where all their North American profits are to be filtered through……to help their world domination programs. When they set up a mosque they declare that town or city as theirs……did you know that?
