South Stormont – At the regular public meeting on Wednesday night, 23rd October, the town council introduced the newly named mascot for the township. The name of the mascot that was chosen is “Hootin Annie” which was submitted by Thomas and Morgan Bray seen in the picture with the mascot and Mayor McGillis.

A second special presentation had the winners of the Cornwall Township Essay contest presented with certificates by Mayor McGillis. Kaitlyn Cloutier, Kara MacDonald and Olivia MacDonald all wrote stories about the war of 1812 from the perspective of wounded soldiers writing home after the Skirmish at Hoople Creek in 1813. Also included in the picture are Sharon McCullough and Ken McDonald from the Cornwall Township Historical Society.

The meeting also included a presentation of the SD&G Economic Development update by CAO Tim Simpson and EDO Terry Besner.

One item that stood out in Corporate Services was big issue in the 2014 budget of the OPP salary increase and the continued loss of OMPF funding for policing. This is a large part of the budget that neither the counties nor the townships have any control over.

After the special presentations and the delegation the council got to work on the regular business of the township. Motions were discussed and passed as well as a new by-law. Once the by-law was passed there was no new business to discuss and the meeting was adjourned for the council to go to a closed session.
