Seniors Situation Room by Dawn Ford Seniors Outreach Program Brings Back Memories

DawnFord_SSRCFN – Kudos to Cornwall Transit for providing shuttle transportation on Feb. 15 and 16th, so that people and their families could enjoy the holiday weekend and the Winterfest . Thank you.

A wonderful program to assist seniors who are alone is offered by the Glen Stor Dun Lodge through the Community Outreach Programs. Volunteers contact the senior everyday to ensure that they are well and not in any crisis or at risk of harm. If there is a problem or the person does not answer the phone, there will be a follow up initiated by the Glen Stor Dun Lodge to ensure the person is ok. Also, according to the brochure I picked up at the Lodge , this call can help lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation. It is an important link also for the person to get information on what resources are available in the community that might be helpful for them. There is no charge to the client within local areas and if there are any long distance charges involved, they will be reviewed on an individual basis. If you are a senior living alone and would like to have a volunteer call you for a daily friendly chat, according to Tessa Grant of the TAP, this free service is available to seniors living in Cornwall and SD&G. Call the community Outreach Program the Glen Stor Dun Lodge (613)-933-3384 ext. 4250.

Beek Lindsay, a seniors’ residence is situated on the site of the former Trinity Anglican Church hall . We called it the ‘Sunday School’ as kids. I recently found some old photos taken in1948, I believe. I gave the originals years ago to the church but kept these copies. I had written on the one of the hall in green ink, ‘Ye Old Sunday School .’ My younger sister Evelyn looks about 5 years old in it and I am behind her, Mike Jacobs behind me at the top center and next to him, Sandra Alquire-Fox. Betty Whitford is in there somewhere also. She said she is on the left hand side in the middle wearing a toque. If you recognize anyone, please let me know because I can’t remember anyone else in it.

Also here is a photo of the Trinity Church men’s choir in 1956-57. In the back row left is the late Ernie Grant, two over is Larry Keen Jr. In the middle is Rev. Canon Clarke and Mr. Hall to the right, the choir director. I don’t recognize anyone else. Do you?

Don’t forget the Cornwall Green Food Box Program offered by the Seaway Valley Community Health Center .It is a non-profit program that gives us the opportunity to get fruits and vegetables at a great price because they buy in bulk. Also they purchase the items locally when possible. The Green Box is $10 with emphasis on offering staples while the Variety Green Box at $15 offers a greater variety of fruits and vegetables. . The boxes also come with info on nutrition, recipes and cooking tips. I f you order by the first Friday of each month, according to the brochure, you can pick up the boxes on the third Wednesday of every month at four different locations. Call 613-937-2683, Ext. 234 for more info. I called and was told that this month, as an example, if you place your order by the 9th, pick up will be on the 16th. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Here’s a bit of humor to brighten our day:

A senior citizen said to his eighty-year old buddy: ‘So I hear you’re getting married?’

Yep!’

Do I know her?’

Nope!’

This woman, is she good looking?’

Not really.’

Is she a good cook?’

Naw, she can’t cook too well.’

Does she have lots of money?’

Nope! Poor as a church mouse.’

Well, then, is she good in bed?’

I don’t know.’

Why in the world do you want to marry her then?’

Because she can still drive!’

Have a good week, Dawn
