Should Barstool Prophet Graham Greer Stick to Music or Run for Council in Cornwall Ontario by Jamie Gilcig

graham-july-13-2011-800x471CORNWALL Ontario – David Murphy, the  Cornwall City Councilor with the smooth voice and no substance has leaked at Lift Off that his bud, gifted musician Graham Greer, (The Wedgie King of Cornwall!)  is about to throw his guitar pick into the ring and take a run for council in the 2014 election.

Mr. Greer, the beneficiary of his second patronage appointment (first at the Agape while his wife was operations manager) where he is/was the marketing guy for the city funded Aultsville Theatre.

Awhile ago I had a chat with Mr. Greer. I was paying him a sales call at Aultsville Theatre, and after he belabored and ballyhoed about stories on CFN I asked him if he had an actual business reason for Aultsville to not advertise or do business with the largest media outlet in Cornwall with the best value and options for advertising and marketing?

That stopped him cold and he agreed to a meeting but called back minutes later to say if I had any offers to the theatre that the board said I had to email it in.

Of course the lead board member was the very special Cornwall City Councilor Denis Thibault.

Mr. Greer, if he goes through with his offering to public service, would be what we call around here, a “Bobble head” candidate.

Other bobble heads currently nominated include;  well far too many of them,  although a double special Bobble would go to Guy St. Jean.  And of course Alyssa Blais who worked with Mrs. Greer at Agape has announced she’s running, but has yet to file her papers.  Her hubby John Earle just lost his first attempt at elected patronage leading the local Liberals to a dismal second, barely ahead of Elaine MacDonald and her NDP in the provincial election.

Graham’s wife, the pigeon toed Lori,  has been promoted within the ranks of Cornwall patronage from the Agape, and now is the head of the local United Way affiliate.

You have to love Small Town politics.

Btw, Mrs. Greer, generally if you’re going to dine in a window spot of a restaurant and sneer at people; you probably should wait until they’ve walked by and are out of camera shot.

So Cornwall would you vote for Mr. Greer?  You can post your comments below.

  1. F*ck him. I remember back in the 90s when Mr. Greer and his band promoted themselves as being from Ottawa. No matter how they rationalized it, I remember it left me feeling as though somehow Cornwall wasn’t good enough. Even as a teenager (at the time) I remember thinking Mr Greer was an insincere moron. He should fit right in on Cornwall City Council.

  2. I have known Graham Greer for almost 30 years. We went to public school and high school together and have remained close friends since then. Even during those early days, Graham had no tolerance for injustices and an unbelievable ability to seek-out the best quality in people, and make them feel really good about themselves. His ability to win a counsel seat in the upcoming election (if he chooses) will be a testament to his character and will be an opportunity to highlight the contributions he has made to this community. I believe that your “soap-box antics” have gone too far this time. This attack on Graham (and/or Laurie) was unwarranted and unnecessary. Jamie, I have lost a degree of respect for you today. 🙁

  3. I don’t know Graham Greer if I fell on top of him but I do know that small towns are mighty weird in the way that they behave politically and every other way. Ottawa is a big city and you don’t get to know people like you do in Cornwall and I like it that way where I don’t vote for any of those turkeys. By Jamie’s description he would fit in well with Bare Ass and I take Jamie’s word as the truth and is a good judge of character. I cannot stand snobs nor followers. Ottawa is so full of snobs and I like people who are themselves and down to earth. I ignore the rest of them that think that they are better than others.

Jules Graham is a great guy. I totally like him and his music is amazing. I think you hit something when you mention small towns and when you have a family to provide for I’m sure the pressures can be difficult. Maybe I’m jealous as I don’t get offered patronage gigs myself???? 🙂

  5. Jamie I will take your word for Graham and maybe he should run. I don’t know this man at all but more and more people should get out there and offer what they can of themselves. I wouldn’t doubt that this man is a good musician and he looks like music is in his line. Now if he can only make Bare Ass dance the hell out of office that would be great.

  6. Jamie raising a family is no easy task and a mighty expensive one to boot. There are many people here in Ottawa who are working at many jobs just to keep afloat and these are people with university degrees and making good money and still not enough. One lady on my street has two little dogs and I told her that she is lucky with no kids and just has her dogs. She has been on my street for 35 years in a nice little bungalow. It takes both of her and her husband to work to keep everything going and when you have kids it is a nightmare in expenses. There is a Mexican lady who lives a few doors from her and she babysits the kids in the area and has young ones of her own and her husband makes good money in construction and again it takes everything. You are a fortunate man and you have beautiful pets indeed. Give them a pat for me and a cookie.

  7. Graham would provide new blood to council. Hopefully, if elected, he will have the smarts to declare his conflicts of interest, unlike certain current members of council

  8. Forget about the article on Mr Greer I am far more curious about what in the hell Jules is talking about???? Dogs? Mexicans? Babysitters? Did I miss something here?

  9. Uhm…Jamie, how can you write this article…then back-peddle in the comments section about how great Graham is? Which is it? Stand behind your position.

For the record, I’d have to say you don’t really know the Greers particularly well. Graham is exactly what this council needs.

Marc while not directly speaking to or about Graham, you cannot expect objectivity and leadership when a person(s) livelyhood or status is dependent on those that put them in power.

There are many people in the clique that receive their positions and appointments from the largess of others rather than on true merit. It’s almost like a “closed shop” as many have complained to me who have applied for certain positions as they came up.

If these people get elected do you really think they would ever vote against an issue by someone that essentially paid their rent for years?

It’s not whether a person is nice. We are electing people to lead and represent everyone; not just those that their lives are beholden to. As for my comments I think Graham is a fine musician Cornwall should be proud of and a great guy. I also think that he and his family like all of us face challenges and choices to earn a living in this town or end up like others who have been forced to leave to earn a living.

  11. Many people have been forced from Cornwall to go elsewhere to earn a living and “YOURS TRULY” just happens to be one of the many thousands who was in this situation. I was one who would never bow down and kiss anybody’s keesters to have a job in Cornwall and never will. I have too much pride and self respect for any of that. Cornwall has always been about that but nowadays with the horrible situation it is even worse. I don’t know Graham Greer at all and someone wanted to know what I meant about kids, dogs and a Mexican lady well Jamie mentioned about it being difficult to raise a family and yes it sure is. I see people right near me working many jobs just to keep afloat and many people are suffering as well. I don’t know this Mr. Greer at all but I say to him go for it and see what happens. The thing that concerns me and worries me is Bare Ass getting back in by the stupid people who would vote for him or a vote divided. Bare Ass has to go by hook or by crook. He must be thrown to the glue factory before he does anymore damage.

  12. Can you ever write even a single article without personally insulting someone????????????

  13. Author

@John Major. Are you missing the irony of your insult ?

  14. @ John Major….look up the definition of gonzo journalism.

  15. Author

Gonzo journalism is a style of journalism that is written without claims of objectivity, often including the reporter as part of the story via a first-person narrative. The word “gonzo” is believed to be first used in 1970 to describe an article by Hunter S. Thompson, who later popularized the style. It is an energetic first-person participatory writing style in which the author is a protagonist, and it draws its power from a combination of both social critique and self-satire.[1] It has since been applied to other subjective artistic endeavors.

Gonzo journalism involves an approach to accuracy through the reporting of personal experiences and emotions, as compared to traditional journalism, which favors a detached style and relies on facts or quotations that can be verified by third parties. Gonzo journalism disregards the strictly edited product favored by newspaper media and strives for a more personal approach; the personality of a piece is equally as important as the event the piece is on. Use of sarcasm, humor, exaggeration, and profanity is common.
