Arrest Made in Theft from and Mischief to Habitat for Humanity

14-20906

Detectives from the General Crime Unit have made an arrest in relation to the theft of gas and mischief to a transport van belonging to the organization Habitat for Humanity that occurred in the summer.

On July 16, 2014 staff had filled the gas tank of their large cube van, used to pick-up and transport materials often donated by local businesses. They parked and left the vehicle overnight on their property, located at 323 Bath Rd. The following morning they observed the gas line had been cut to the van and the majority of the fuel had been stolen.

A hose believed to be used to siphon the gas was located and seized as evidence. Detectives received their first break in the case when a homeowner on Helen St. heard of the crime in the media and contacted police to inform them the night before their hose had been cut and the coincidence could be connected.

From their investigation in the Helen St. area detectives began concentrating their efforts on two male associates whose vehicle and activities appeared related to the offences. Detectives further learned the men drove a personal van to Habitat for Humanity and filled it nearby with the stolen gas, but then had lost the van keys during the process. So even with stolen fuel in their tank the men had to have the vehicle towed.

As a result of their investigation detectives formed grounds to charge Richard H. HEPBURN, 51 year-of-age, of the Kingston area. On September 12 he was arrested and charged with Theft Under $5,000 and Mischief in relation to the Habitat for Humanity occurrence. He attended a bail hearing and was remanded into custody with a future court date.
