Male on Weapons Conditions Found with Knife

15-2428

A 45-year-old male on probation with various conditions, including not to be in possession of any weapons, was observed by a concerned citizen inside the stairwell of an apartment building in possession of a knife.

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 26 a female resident was descending the stairwell of her apartment building in the 500 block area of Portsmouth Avenue when she observed the lone male whom she did not recognize as living at the address. He was standing beside a duffel bag and holding a knife.

Police were contacted and observed the male walking along Portsmouth Avenue. When the accused noticed the officers he ignored their instructions and attempted to walk away from them. A tossing motion of an object by the male was seen at a fence line of a residence. The male was detained and the Uniform Patrol officers recovered the knife that was discarded by the accused.

He was held overnight at the Kingston Police station, is being charged with two counts of Breach of Probation, and will attend a bail hearing on January 27.

Grandparent Scam” Seen Again in Kingston

15-2278

What are believed to be out of town fraudsters are once again targeting seniors in the Kingston area. A known “Grandparent Scam” was used on an 83-year-old local woman where on January 22 the caller impersonated a police officer from another city, stating her grandson had been involved in a motor vehicle collision as a result of him being at fault due to him using his cell phone.

Another male was then put on the phone pretending to be the grandson and advised that money was required for him to be released from police custody. Appealing to her nature to want to help a family member in need, the victim then provided her credit card information. In short order over $5,000 was charged to the account. Only on the following day when talking to her son was it realized the call was fraudulent.

Police advise those with elderly family members to have a conversation with them about such scams that target certain vulnerabilities and the pressure of assisting relatives in need. Other tactics include a family member in distress in a foreign country, where money is required to get them out of jail, to assist with passport troubles, or that their wallet or purse has been lost or stolen. Be highly suspicious of such calls and confirm with a knowledgeable relative the veracity of the information being given. Police will never call and request for money to release an accused or incarcerated individual. Any arrangements relating to bail are made in person at a hearing and at the provincial court level.
