Don’t Blame the OPP if There Are No Charges Laid in the Andrew Olivier Sudbury By Election by Jamie Gilcig

Wynne Truck CornwallCFN – Don’t blame the OPP if there are no charges filed over the Sudbury By Election.  Recordings published by Liberal hopeful Andrew Olivier are on the internet and there is an investigation, but as many police can tell you it ends up in the hands of the Crown.

And the Crown, which is run under the auspices of the Attorney General is essentially a political can of worms top down.

And there are very limited and costly means to hold a crown responsible.  They certainly are nowhere near the power that Crown’s have to inflict damage on a party, guilty or not.

NDP defector Glenn Thibeault won the riding for he Liberals.  Mr. Olivier ran for as an Independent and essentially split the vote.

The Unofficial numbers saw Thibeault pull in 10,626 votes to the NDP’s Suzanne Shawbonquit’s 8,985.   Olivier pulled in 3,177.

Thibeault was quoted in the Toronto Star:

“‎No . . . we won tonight,” he told reporters. “The OPP needs to do what the OPP needs to do. You need to leave it in their hands.”

But that simply isn’t true.  Without the cooperation of the Crown Attorney the OPP, or even the RCMP cannot move a case forward.

I think NDP leader Andrea Horwath put it best in the Ottawa Sun as she called for Pat Sorbara to step aside until the investigation is over.

People do step aside until after these investigations are complete so as to ensure that the integrity of the government is upheld,” she said. “So I would call on Kathleen Wynne to make that call and do what is expected for this situation to be dealt with properly.

What do you think dear CFN viewers?  Should Pat Sorbara step aside until the OPP investigation is over and will the OPP be allowed to move a case forward in this politically charged situation?

  1. Here’s hoping charges are laid, but I’m not expecting any to be laid.
