Cornwall Ontario Leaves Raccoon Up On Post All Day in 30c Heat as Hawks Circle 092017

Cornwall Ontario –  Despite numerous appeals to Cornwall Ontario Fire, and Police services a poor raccoon, as of press time 4:56PM, is still at the top of a post at the 900 block of 3rd Street East.

CFN was called this afternoon by a very frustrated hot mom who said that the Raccoon was at the top of the pole since 8 AM.

When this writer attended one person said reports had been that the animal had been at the top of the pole since 6 AM with temperatures hovering over 30c today, with no water or protection.

In the featured photo you can actually see a hawk that was circling the animal. One witness stated that he’d seen three hawks circling.

The home owner said his two little dogs chased the raccoon up the pole and that it had happened before and that the raccoon would come down at night.

Calls to the OSPCA were of no use and the Ministry of Natural Resources allegedly suggested a trapper who said that they wouldn’t come out unless it was to euthanize the animal.

Calls to the Cornwall Fire service went to voicemail.  A fellow Cornwall Police dispatch animal lover made some calls but to no avail.   She said that it sounded like a liability issue; that nobody wanted to deal with a potentially wild or ill animal.

Clearly if this animal survives it should be trapped and moved to safer, ground, perhaps Guindon Parc?

Just before hitting the publish button we received an email from the Ministry of Natural Resources:

You called  MNRF TIPS line with concerns about a raccoon on top of the pole?.  We checked with one of our biologists who says there is no need for concern-  6 hours isn’t cause of concern. He says the animal will come down when it’s cooler and darker and people leave it alone.
