CFN – Christina “Corky” Julien was back home in Cornwall Ontario before embarking on her first European professional gig playing Soccer in Sweden.

It’s her tune up as she prepares for for the 2012 Olympics in England.  She helped Canada qualify for the Olympics; an achievement unto itself.

The Williamstown native sat down with us for a chat at The Grind in Cornwall Ontario.

CFN – Leave it to a Doctor to stir controversy regarding nursing!   That’s exactly what Dr. Tombler has done in Cornwall Ontario.

The good doctor lashed out, and I have to admit, I agree with him, about the Cornwall Hospital policy of only hiring bilingual nurses full time.

“The reality is that the hospital functions virtually entirely in English, from the senior administration to the very board which approved the ad in question. I sat on the hospital board when French language testing was made policy; I, and the other two physicians who sat on the board, voted against this policy. We quite rightly made the point that nursing skills were more important to patient care than proficiency in French.”

Can anyone really argue that point; especially when there’s a shortage of nurses that qualify as whatever bilingual is interpreted to mean and non bilingual nurses rack up immense overtime hours.

In these days of watching every penny in the medical system does this make any sense?

Is it really about offering services in both official languages?   Should that come ahead of offering the best possible services?  Many I spoke with this afternoon were upset that they get labeled as “prejudiced or racist” to protest this policy pointing out this is a financial issue and right to work issue, and of course patient care issue in the end.

Cornwall Nurse Julie Johnston had the following to say:

Speaking French should not be requirement to attain employment. I would like to know how many doctors are bilingual?

To not get promoted to a full time job as a result of not passing their french exam is discriminatory. I speak French but would not pass their test.

CFN –  Joan Levy-Earle (Mann) was at the public library this afternoon, concerning her newest book The Road Home.  It’s about her faith journey and weaves in stories of many local figures.  She’s still an artist (painter), has taught dance, operated The Sanctuary, etc.  Her name is well-known in the area.  The next book (under development) will focus on Kytes (the store at that land mark before she purchased it).

Although she re-marrried after Jack’s death and is living in Toronto, she returns “home” to Cornwall monthly to visit her mom and the grand kids

CFN – Enbridge Pipelines Inc. Community Relations Advisor, Ken Hall (centre) presented a cheque in the amount of $10,000 to the Township Fire & Rescue Department. Chief Desjardins (right) recently applied for the funding to assist with the purchase of water rescue related equipment.

CFN –  Here is your Police Blotter for the Cornwall Ontario area for Friday February 3, 2012.

DOMESTIC BREACH

            Cornwall, ON- A 25 year-old Cornwall female was arrested on the 2^nd of February, 2012. She was bound by a probation order with the relevant conditions of no contact (in)directly with her 34 year-old ex-boyfriend and keep the peace and be of good behaviour. It is alleged that on the 2^nd of February, 2012 she was observed to be with her 34 ex-boyfriend by a member of the Cornwall Community Police Service Patrol Division. She was charged with breach of probation order and released to appear in court on the 6^th of March, 2012. Her name was not released as it would identify the male in this incident.

DRUG SEARCH WARRANTS

            Cornwall, ON- Members of the Cornwall Community Police Service Street Crime Unit assisted by members of the Ontario Provincial Police have conducted several drug related investigations including executing 2 drug search warrants between the 10^th of January, 2012 and the 2^nd of February, 2012. As a result of the investigations, 8 people were arrested and charged with drug and criminal code related charges when they were allegedly found to be in possession of controlled substances. Police seized a quantity of substances believed to by cocaine, hydromorphone, marijuana, oxycodone, psilocybin and methamphetamine.  The total value of seized drugs and property is estimated at $12,000.00.

Jacqueline Lapierre, 46 of Cornwall was bound by a probation order with the condition of to abstain from the purchase, possession or consumption of drugs and to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.  It is alleged that on the 12^th of January as a result of an investigation, she was charged with 3 counts of trafficking controlled substances, 4 counts of breach of probation order and 2 counts of possession of property obtained by crime. She was held in custody until court the following day.

Nancy Leach, 47 of Cornwall was arrested on the 20^th of January, 2012. It is alleged that she was found to be in the possession of controlled substances. She was charged with possession for the purpose, possession of a controlled substance and possession of property obtained by crime. She was released to appear in court on the 14^th of February, 2012.

William Vaughan Rogers, 62 of Cornwall was arrested on the 20^th of January, 2012. It is alleged that he was found to be in the possession of controlled substances. He was charged with possession for the purpose, possession of a controlled substance and possession of property obtained by crime. He was released to appear in court on the 14^th of February, 2012.

Jason Tyrell, 32 of Cornwall was bound by a probation order with the following conditions of keep the peace and be of good behaviour and to abstain from the possession of drugs except in accordance with a medical prescription. It is alleged that on the 20^th of January, 2012 he was found to be possession of controlled substance. He was charged with 2 counts of breach of probation order and possession of a controlled substance. He was released to appear in court on the 7^th of February, 2012.

Joshua Montgomery, 20 of Cornwall was arrested on the 26^th of January, 2012. It is alleged that as a result of an investigation, he was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, 2 counts of possession of property obtained by crime and 2 counts of trafficking  controlled substances. He was released to appear in court on the 21^st of February, 2012.

Joel Bruyere, 21 of Cornwall was bound by a recognizance of bail with the following relevant conditions of not to consume or possess non prescription drugs and no cell phone or pagers. It is alleged that on the 2^nd of February, 2012 he was found to be in possession of controlled substances and a cell phone. He was charged with 5 counts of possession of a controlled substance, 5 counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking,  2 counts of possession of property obtained by crime and 2 counts of breach of recognizance. He was also found to be in the possession of a stolen laptop. He was held in custody until court the following day.

Denis Bruyere, 48 of Cornwall was arrested on the 2^nd of February, 2012. It is alleged that the 2^nd of February, 2012 he was found to be in the possession of a controlled substance. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and released to appear in court on the 6^th of March, 2012.

BREACHES

            Cornwall, ON- Daniel Quigley, 25 of Cornwall was arrested on the 2^nd of February, 2012. He was bound by a probation order with relevant conditions of obey curfew, be in your residence at all times unless permission is obtained in writing from the probation officer or designate and except for three hours prior and three hours after employment, no contact directly or indirectly with a certain person and keep the peace and be of good behaviour. It is alleged that on the 2^nd of February, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. he was observed to be away from his residence and with the said person. He was charged with 3 counts of breach of probation order and released to appear in court on the 6^th of March, 2012.

THEFT & BREACH

            Cornwall, ON- Michael Donegan, 28 of Cornwall was arrested on the 2^nd of February, 2012. He was bound by a probation order with the condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. It is alleged that on the 2^nd of February, 2012 he attended a Ninth Street store and removed merchandise without making any attempt to pay for the items. Police were contacted and an investigation followed. He was charged with theft under $5000.00 and breach of probation order. He was released to appear in court on the 6^th of March, 2012.

ATTEMPT THEFT

            Cornwall, ON- The Cornwall Community Police is currently investigating an attempt theft that occurred on the 2^nd of February, 2012 shorty after 7:00 a.m. at a Brookdale Avenue facility. It is alleged that the suspect(s) attempted to pry open containers. If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the Service at 613-932-2110 or Crime Stoppers at613-937-8477.

CFN – Saturday, September 8 should be a day to remember in Port Burwell, Ontario. That is the day the decommissioned submarine Ojibwa, Canada’s first Oberon Class submarine is set arrive at her new home to become the centerpiece of the Elgin Military Museum’s new naval museum. The decision to earmark September 8 as the day the sub will be brought ashore and placed on her new foundations was made at a meeting of the Ojibwa Project Team on January 30.

The schedule of work that set the September date is one of the remaining pieces required to obtain the final release of Ojibwa to the Museum.  “A definitive work schedule and proof of the required financing are still required by National Defence.  We now have the schedule, and are working diligently to finalize the financing as quickly as possible”, said Ian Raven, Museum Executive Director.

“There is still much to do between now and then”, Raven said, “our team of engineers, technicians and others met to make sure that everyone is ready to do their part to guarantee all the bits will be in place for the arrival date.”

“We are proud of the team of experts that we have put together to carry out the move and mounting of Ojibwa” said Project Coordinator Rear Admiral Dan McNeil (Retired).  “Many complex operations will need to occur simultaneously and we are confident that we have the best people for the job.”

In the plan, in early May Heddle Marine Services will load the submarine onto a floating dry-dock in Halifax and tow her to their shipyard in Hamilton.  There she will be transferred to a smaller barge and the task begins to mount her on her permanent cradles.   As this is happening, the foundation work will be taking place at the site in Port Burwell, while Riggs Engineering organizes the dredging of the harbour to the required depth.  Meanwhile, the heavy lift specialists from Mammoet will be booking and ensuring the availability of their Self Propelled Mobile Transporters and other ancillary equipment, all of which will arrive in Port Burwell immediately before the transfer date.

Three years of planning and hard work will culminate on September 8, when Ojibwa arrives in Port Burwell harbor and is mounted on her final resting place.  “This is sure to be a very busy summer for the Project Team”, said Deb Jarvis, Museum President.

Once Ojibwa is secure on her new foundation, work will begin to prepare her for her new role as a museum exhibit as well as to build and fit out the new museum support building in time for a planned opening in the summer of 2013.

Ojibwa was the first of her class to arrive new and shiny in 1965, and she will be the last to leave Halifax, where they have been a fixture since their decommissioning in 1996.  Onondaga is a museum piece in Rimouski, Quebec while Okanogan and Olympus were towed to a salvage yard to be broken up last summer.  Ojibwa’s trip from Halifax to Port Burwell will be the last opportunity to see a Canadian Oberon submarine outside a museum.

CFN – The officials from the Cornwall Meals on Wheels program wish to remind Cornwall and area residents that it does not solicit donations by going door-to-door.

The organization has received several phone calls in recent days from concerned residents who have been approached by an individual who is collecting donations at the door. In some of the cases, the individual has stated that they are collecting donations for Meals on Wheels on behalf of an organization based in Toronto.

The Cornwall Community Police Service offers the following tips for homeowners when dealing with door-to-door solicitors:

·         Ask the individual to see their identification.

·         Never let anyone in your home.

·         Don’t get pressured into providing money.

·         Do not provide any credit card numbers or bank account information.

The Cornwall Meals on Wheels program receives funding from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, the United Way of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, the City of Cornwall and individual donations. Those wishing to make a donation to Meals on Wheels are asked to call the United Way at (613) 932-2051 or directly at the Meals on Wheels program provided by the Glen Stor Dun Lodge at (613) 933-3384.

CFN – Bob Gainey can’t be a happy camper this morning.    The team that he crafted came out of the All Star break with just a glimmer of hope.    Those horns in the background were not the sounds of victory, but of the death of the Habs 2011/12 NHL season.

With two horrible losses out of the gate the team’s Play Off dreams are smashed on the rocks and now the exiting of some veterans will begin.    Hal Gill, gone.  Travis Moen; probably gone.  Andrei Kostitsyn, probably gone too,and maybe, just maybe, Pierre Gauthier will be gone too.

Mr. Gainey?  Only Geoff Molson can answer that question; but today he can’t be terribly happy with his team.   The good news is that there are a bunch of games to let the younguns get some valuable experience.     Louis Leblanc should be getting his chance to learn on the job.

Montreal’s biggest question mark is Carey Price.   Goalies are funny creatures.  Mr. Price’s value is very very high right now.   Media reports are suggesting a long term $7M per year contract.    I think that would be tragic for this team.  Almost as tragic as trading for Scott Gomez who most likely will be given another chance next year to redeem himself.

There’s plenty for Montreal fans to be chewing on.       A big concern for me is finding a way to make Tomas Plekanec happy.   He really needs a line to play on for his own growth and success and he’s really earned it watching the fiasco that this season has been.

Montreal managed to blow a lead against New Jersey and lose 5-3 on only 22 shots by the Devils.    That kind of loss can’t be acceptable in Montreal.

In other NHL scores Sam Gagner had the game of his career notching 8 points and a + 6 on the night as Edmonton stunned Chicago 8-4.

Carolina shut out Boston 3-0; Philly defeated Nashville 4-1; the Jets nipped Tampa 2-1; Minnesota shut out Colorado 1-0; Detroit 4 Vancouver 3 in the shoot out, and San Jose defeated Dallas 5-2.
