CFN -Coffey’s Coffee and the Island Ink Jet and Laser Toners are please to be able to offer samples of two of the world’s rarest coffees, Kopu Luwak and Reunion Island. The coffees will be served at the Island Ink Jet at 8 Third St. West on Friday morning, 18 May 2012 for a nominal price.

There is a very limited supply of these rare and expensive coffees so it will be first come first serve for as long as the supply lasts.

If you are a true coffee lover this is an opportunity to taste these legendary coffees.

Warning…There is a down side to this event. If you happen to fall in love with these spectacular coffees their retail price is about $140 per lb!

The extensive renovations to the vintage building are almost complete.  The liquor license has been approved and the final steps of preparation are being completed!

This is my first Valentine’s Day in nearly ten years where I am on the other side of the equation being estranged from my ex wifey to be for now nearly 9 months.

Our holidays become so commercialized.  It’s amazing how our society tries to tie the magic of memories to the spending of vast amounts of cash.   As I type this and review my last few years worth of Valentine’s Day I can see this trend.     

I’ve been asking some of my single friends what they’re doing today?   Single women with children of course make the kids their Valentines, and that sorta makes sense.   My dog Melly will be mine this year, and I’ll put on some Bon Jovi for her; she seems like like Bon Jovi, and give her a monster peanut butter dog bickie as a treat; no roses though as the stems get stuck in her teeth… 

I guess for me Valentine’s Day has always been about the uber expression of love and emotion for my loved one of the day.  I think it truly is about amping up the value and awareness of our special lovies.

Of course we should be appreciating and enjoying them all 365 days of the year.      I watch some of my coupled friends and look at what I perceive about their relationships that work and what the glue is that keeps them going.

One local couple I hang with have been together for over 30 years; can you imagine?  My parents were together 43 years before my dad passed.  I always like to think how great that my dad was able to achieve his greatest goal in his life in winning the hand of my mom.    Through thick and thin they loved each other to the end.   

So here are some tips to a successful Valentine’s Day.

If you haven’t planned a big trip or something over the top here are some little things to do because they really do count.

Write a little love note that your partner will find in the morning.   If you’re schedule allows make sure you have that special morning kiss and eye contact.  Set the table for the day.  And that means you ladies.  Don’t leave it all to us guys.

Women can be the most unromantic creatures.  Men like romance too!

Don’t give it all away.   Little surprises can be magical.   I know we all work too hard and are always busy; especially if kids are involved; but make contact during the day and build some excitement towards the night.

Getting out is great if that’s your thing; but it’s about spending time together and cherishing each other.

I had one girl friend that loved when we’d cook together; mostly because she couldn’t cook.  We’d open a lovely bottle of wine and February would melt away; eating a meal we’d prepared together; and spending that time together with the world far away can be magical; but then so can an evening having a lovely tete a tete in a fine eatery.

So make magic this Valentine’s Day if you can.  Really focus on each other; feel each other; listen; give; and be grateful, because you never know if this is your last one together.

So when she overheard I was doing a review for Keitha Fisher’s new eatery, Dish Real Food, she quickly asked me not to trash her friend and I saw those tiny and rare worry lines on her face wiggle.

“Angela why do you assume that I’d trash Keitha?”    She mentioned bad blood and I explained that Keitha and I had no “bad blood”.   She and I were on the Farmer’s market board, and when she was hired to run the local trunk sale produce market immediately cancelled our advertising after two successful years marketing the downtown attraction.

Angela repeated the story I’d heard before; that Keitha killed our ads as she was upset that Reg Coffey left the market to move to Long Sault.    So I asked her, as I had others, what that had to do with CFN or the work we’d done for the market for two years?

I also explained that Reg; who’s like a kindly gnome on an extreme coffee buzz reacted to her and Tony Lakroix trashing CFN which Reg is a minority share holder of.

Thus your back ground.   I also explained to the delightful soap maker that if I trashed Real Dish Foods because of something as totally retarded as Keitha’s actions it’d look as bad on me as her decision did on her.

That’s not CFN, and it certainly isn’t me.   Isn’t living in a city small enough feel like a small town fun!

Keitha Fisher, formerly known as the Lunch Tramp for her proclivity to eat lunch at Schnitzels a lot with her downtown friends, decided to open a restaurant with her partner Monique Vermeulena in the former Papa Joe’s.

What’s most remarkable is the speed in which the two were able to open (LINK to before pics)  in light of the delays in Truffles and the new Indian resto on Pitt who have been been held up in opening and lost the Holiday season.   Maybe being friends with City Councilor and Heart of the City honcho Carr has some perks after all?

The partners have created an interesting menu.   I have to admit some of the menu choices on their web site did tantalize me.   I was looking forward to the Roast beef sandwich as I love Carmelized Onions.    The space only seats nine and the girls have positioned themselves menu wise somewhere between Riley’s and Moustache Joe’s.

When I arrived Keitha explained that you pick your pre-wrapped sandwich from the fridge.   Sadly I was late and there was no Roast beef left so I settled for a lovely Chicken, Bacon, and Guacamole sandwich.

I added the small soup, which that day was potato and leek.   My bill for the plate ( I always pay for review meals) was $8.48 including HST.   Ms Fisher explained that she imports her Artisan bread from a baker near Ottawa.  I have to admit that the chicken was moist enough.  I’m not a huge fan of chicken sandwiches, but am less of a fan of Ham.  The chicken was also fresh; not cut deli which I thought was lovely.  The bacon was flavorful and the guacamole was fresh and yummy.

What was missing was some sort of sauce to pull the flavors together.   The freshness was there, but the magic wasn’t quite.   I wouldn’t pan the food, but I wasn’t excited or excessively pleased.   When I do a review I tend to judge it based on expectations.  After all, when we pay a premium to eat that’s what we’re looking for, that experience.

The soup was pleasant as well.   I like my soups, even creamed ones, to have a bit of texture or chunks in them, but that’s a personal preference and not a bad take.   The flavors did come out in spite of the blandness.

There were no garnishes or sides as you can see from the picture.

Real Dish Foods is a walking trade lunch spot.   I would eat there again, but it wouldn’t necessarily be a first choice.   There’s no close parking at lunch as it’s right at the corner of Pitt & Second next to the Fence project that Councilor Carr chose Ms Fisher to lead.

All in all a good beginning.  It should be interesting to see how the two partners evolve the space and choices?
