Cornwall ON - So who owns the Internet?  Should anyone own the Internet?  Should we all have free access to it?  Who should control it and why if so?

There are battles going on right now.   At the turn of the 20th century the passport system was introduced because advances in travel made it easy for people to get around.   While there were lots of benefits things like spying grew and national paranoia and control issues took over.

Passports were created so that “Big Brother” at least the kind of that day, could have some sort of way of knowing who was going where, when, and of course why.   It wasn’t a perfect system, and of course the “bad guys” always found ways around it thus leaving the good guys to have to waste their time.

Technology advancements have led to everyday people travelling the world from the comfort of their electronic device of choice.   The Internet has changed the world and will continue to change the world as we know it.

China makes it illegal for some communications as a means of control of society.   Apparently many in the West are jealous and are trying to find ways to “control it” or control you and I.   The current excuse is monetary.

With the recession/depression governments are looking for ways to monetize the internet and of course that monetization turns into a class issue.  Right now there’s a big press for convergence and using mobile devices to use the internet, but the cost of “bandwidth” on most mobile phones is a bit prohibitive.

Big Media companies have also taken a brutal beating in the age of the Internet.  While financial in large part it’s also about control of our agenda and the messages that we are supposed to digest.

Go back to the 50′s and you couldn’t say “Pregnant” on TV.  There were censors and “codes of conduct”.   Even today the Howard Stern’s of the world can say what they want on Satellite radio because it’s not “controlled” by the FCC.   Our own radio station, Seawayradio.com has freedoms because it’s not a signatory to the CRTC here in Canada.

Net Neutrality is the hot buzzword and has been for a few years now.   There’s an ongoing struggle for not only freedom of speech, but the ability to communicate that speech.   Right now if big Cable, internet, phone, and media companies had their way there’s going to be a new level of internet, very much commercially controlled that will make it free for “Big Brothers” websites to be viewed but make it more expensive for sites like this one to be available to you.

There’ll be extra fees, and extra hoops which in the end will result in focusing people on content on the main tube and many sites like this may one day wither and die.

Of course this fortunately is still in the discussion and fighting stages at this point;  but it’s not that far away.

It’s something to think about this invisible highway we almost all travel.

Cornwall ON -So do you think the iPad and tablet computers are going to replace your tower and desktop?  The latest rage seems a simple enlarging of your iPhone or Smart phone with bigger screens making it easier to enjoy the features we want more.

Times are always changing; especially when it comes to technology and the internet.   I remember paying $3500 for my new 486 which was suped up with a full 16MB of ram!

Steve Jobs at Apple, which has now surpassed Microsoft in value as a company, thinks that the iPad is the future of computing.

RBC Capital Markets has estimated iPad’s total shipments will reach 8.13 million units worldwide by the end of the year -- which would translate into at least $4 billion of revenue.

IDC predicts that as many as 46 million tablet computers will be delivered worldwide during 2014, as the iPad stimulates demand for the new form factor and other manufacturers target the market.

Mr Jobs said that it was “surreal” that Apple had overtaken Microsoft to become the world’s biggest technology company by market capitalisation.

Cornwall ON -- No, that’s not a new tech device.  Just an old TV pic.   What’s new is the brave new world coming to Television as CONVERGENCE crashes into our realities.

GOOGLE is in the process of rolling out Google TV in the US.   We here in Canada will have to wait a year or so; just like watching Coronation Street, but in the future we’ll be able to turn on our TV and watch internet content as easy as we flip through the channels now.

Cornwall ON - Tri-County Literacy Council has offered basic computer instruction to the residents of S.D. & G. since 1986.  A cap of 6 students per session means that students learn in a relaxed environment and receive the individual attention they often need.

Over the years the agency has offered a drop-in program for persons who cannot commit to a specific time and who may have very specific questions or learning needs.  Other programs have included PowerPoint for those who may wish for example to make presentations on a large viewing screen, Excel for those who for example want to keep a better set of budgeting records and Mavis Beacon for those who simply want to learn to type or to increase their existing speed.

More recently Tri-County Literacy Council received additional funding from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to improve its computer services for both students and practitioners.  As a result, the agency updated its lab with new computers and software and now it can offer some exciting new programs.

Come join the agency as it offers a program on basic computers from the absolute beginner or those with some knowledge.  If you’ve heard about Facebook and Twitter and wonder what all the excitement is about, now you too can learn how these social networking tools can be used in multiple ways in the new Social Networking program offered by TCLC.  Of course, you can still drop in with your specific needs like attaching something to an email or uploading pictures to the computer or you may wish to join the Web Design course if you are keen about designing a website for your family or small business.  Finally, you have the opportunity to visit Tri-County Literacy every other Wednesday to participate in a “Feature Presentation”.  These are mini courses designed to give the very basics in today’s technology like running a digital camera, setting up a Social Networking account, shopping on Kijiji or E-Bay, etc.

Cornwall ON – A little while ago we reported that while on tour of Eastern Ontario MPP and Revenue Minister John Wilkinson was interviewed by Assistant News Director of AM 1220 Bill Kingston, in Cornwall, and that the interview was not aired.   We did some research and sent out queries to Mr. Kingston and his direct Boss Lorne Wiebe.

While neither was returned in writing we were able to confirm that the minister was in fact interviewed by Mr. Kingston and that the station “chose” to not air the interview.     It seems to simply be a rebut and insult to a visiting Minister of State by a Corus Radio Station or news staff/manager.

This raises several questions.   One, why interview the minister if you’re not going to run the interview?   I recently interviewed one of Mr. Harper’s ministers, and while I’m certainly not a support of Mr. Harper’s I showed professional respect to Mr. Goodyear who in fact was a great interview.

What do you think Cornwall and Canada?  Should Mr. Kingston simply not wasted the Minister’s time and not interviewed him?  Was Corus in the wrong for not airing the interview?   Are all of their listeners of the same political opinion to squish public information in this manner?   Does a news media outlet have an obligation to report information from Politicians’s especially with elections coming up?
