Iroquois ON - The Iroquois Golf Course was smelling mighty fine as Organic Lamb and Porc cooked.   It was a Five Mile meal served with local Vegetables, Fruits, and meet provided by Waratah Downs Organic Farm, 11211 Rowen Rd, Iroquois, Ontario.   Some amazing organic cheese from New Care Eco Farms Peter and Maria Biemond rounded out an amazing meal.

The head speaker was Mr. Tom Manley of Homestead Organics who discussed the ready availability of local food, the choice and selection available, and the benefits not only in quality, but in having an organic economical impact by having local food producers supporting local communities.

Cornwall ON - When Kris Rothley looks in her closet, often she can’t decide what to wear. Rothley, who is married and a mother of three, is also the Dean at the Ontario Hockey Academy. With a very busy lifestyle, she welcomes the Six Items or Less challenge to simplify her life.

Rothley read about Six Items or Less on the Internet. She was intrigued and wanted to try it herself. The challenge for participants is to wear only six articles of clothing for an entire month.

“I’m hoping to waste less time staring into a packed closet, and I look forward to the money I will save by not buying clothes for a month”.

Rothley is well acquainted with challenges. From running a marathon to university studies, she has challenged herself both athletically and academically, and has had success in her endeavours. She has degrees from M.I.T, Cornell University, and a Ph. D from Yale.

One obstacle for Six Items or Less is choosing just six items of clothing out of all the choices in the closet. Another part of the challenge is wearing different combinations of those six items and diversifying them with accessories. The six items does not include accessories, undergarments, work uniforms, work out clothing, jackets, shoes, or swimwear.

“I want to make space in my closet and do something positive by donating some of the clothes that do not make the six item cut-off to the Agape”.

The Six Items or Less website does not adhere to a philosophy or ideology. It is simply a challenge for people to try. But regardless of the indent,  the experiment has deeper implications.

All clothing produced and purchased has an ecological footprint. From extracting resources, to manufacturing, transportation, and washing clothes, all these things have an impact on the environment.

Many people have an abundance of stuff they don’t really need or use, so an experiment like Six Items or Less is an opportunity to reflect upon this.

Cornwall ON - The Sounds of Buskerville first annual festival rang through the streets of Cornwall Ontario raising money for the United Way and treating people to some amazing local music Saturday.

Cornwall ON - It’s amazing how communities can pull together so quickly for a good cause.  What started out as a good idea that was going to happen in a basement turned into a warm and happy event at one of the hottest spots in town filled to capacity; listening to super local music and helping a great cause!

Nancy Munro had an awful lot of hair.  She estimated it was longer than 17 inches and she donated her braid to raise money for Cancer.

The Angel Hair for Kids, a program developed by A Child’s Voice Foundation to help children undergoing cancer treatment and CHEO’s  Arts and Crafts play room will now have $3,000.00 more dollars to do their work.

This week at the Farmers Market there are a bunch of new vendors.

Lang’s corn will be available at the market tomorrow. It is about a week earlier than I expected. How exciting. There will also be a new vendor, Black & White farms, selling beef and lamb. Can’t wait. Our regular vendors will also be available with their local offerings such as buffalo meat, produce, coffee, salad dressings, cheesecake, body lotions, jewellery, dog treats. See you tomorrow. Also, Brandon O’Flaherty will be performing tomorrow morning at around 10:30 so come and enjoy his acoustic performance.

Stick around at the end of the market and wander down Pitt Street and visit the library to enjoy Buskerville, Cornwall’s first busker festival. Support our local artists and the United Way. Cornwall ON - Nancy Munro will be getting a haircut, but not at the hair salon or barber shop. On the night of Friday July 23rd Munro will be at Schnitzels (158 Pitt Street in Cornwall) from 6pm to 10pm for a very special cut.

“I’ll be getting a few years worth of locks chopped off, and raising funds to boot!”

Munro will donate her pony tail to Angel Hair for Kids, a program developed by A Child’s Voice Foundation to help children undergoing cancer treatment.

Munro is also fundraising for CHEO to help raise money for their Arts and Crafts play room.

“I’ve contacted CHEO and they assured me that it’s not only appreciated, but needed. An example, they have to throw out a box of crayons after each child has used it. Do you know how many kids go through CHEO? That’s a lot of crayons!”.

Munro’s niece Amy was diagnosed with Leukemia two months shy of her fourth birthday.

Amy spent a lot of time at CHEO, and one of her favourite places to play was the Arts and Crafts room at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

“It was a place where she could be a kid again. Sadly, Amy lost her battle and passed away at the age of 6. To this day, some of her creations from that room are keepsakes held close to our hearts. I am so grateful to have some of them!”

Munro was inspired by her friend Sarah, who cut her hair a few years ago, and donated it to a foundation that made wigs for sick kids who suffered hair lost.

After a few years of letting her hair grow out, Munro is ready for a hair cut, and her kindness will make a difference in the lives of some sick children.

It takes at 10 to 15 pony tails at least 10” long to make a wig. So Munro encourages others to donate their hair.

If you would like to donate money to Munro’s fundraising event, here’s how! Cheques are made payable to CHEO Foundation “Child Life”. Tax receipts are issued for donations of $10.00 or more.

There won’t just be hair cutting at Schnitzels, several local musicians are donating their time to provide hours of entertainment for this worth cause.
