UPDATE  – We’ve updated this story as apparently the original quote in the original story may have been inaccurate.   We’ll try and arrange an interview with the Doctor to clarify the issue further.

A report in the Standard Free-Holder by David Nesseth suggests that Cornwall Ontario residents live seven less years than Ottawa residents.

“According to a 2007 Canadian Community Health Survey, the health unit’s catchment area has higher averages than the province for self-reported cases of anxiety, arthritis, asthma, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia and high blood pressure, to name just a few.Local H1N1 hospitalization numbers, Roumeliotis said, were also well above the provincial average, with many locals, mostly youth, even winding up in Ottawa area hospitals.

Roumeliotis believes that social determinants of health play a large role in the local region’s health issues. He suggested literacy and education rates, as well as families’ financial status, can have long-term health effects on children from the area. “If you don’t have a good start, you’re going to end up with problems,” Roumeliotis said. “There is a seven year difference of life expectancy between here and Ottawa,” he told the council.”

This story we’ve linked to was in regard to H1N1 Virus and how much harder Cornwall has been hit than other communities in Ontario.   I would agree with Dr. Roumeliotis that education is a huge factor.   An example I’ve seen is fast food servers offering up bottled beverages by holding them at the top.   Any virus or bacteria on their hands is now on the drinking area of the container.     That’s just not a safe way to handle these items.

There’s been a lot of discussion about Flu pandemics.   We had bird flu, swine flu, and now amidst a lot of discussion after billions of dollars have been spent vaccinating people the World Health Organization (WHO) is entering the discussion.

“the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe said “false pandemics, a threat to health” will be a major theme of its next plenary session, with a debate slated for Jan. 28.

The WHO moved to the top level of its six-step pandemic alert in June after the discovery of swine flu in Mexico and the U.S. in April. The virus has spread to more than 208 countries and overseas territories, the Geneva-based agency said Jan. 8.”

First H1N1 is bad, but now it may be good?   According to Scientists and Doctors H1N1, like other pandemic type viruses are so strong that they may actually weaken or destroy other nasty bugs that could impact our health.

“In the wake of this pandemic, flu vaccine could be easier to make or could cover more targets. A tricky problem of drug resistance could disappear. And the toll influenza takes on the elderly could conceivably ease, at least for awhile.”

In simple terms, during the pandemics of the 20th century – 1918, 1957 and 1968 – the new virus snuffed out its viral predecessor.

“If this pandemic virus were to replace seasonal strains, either H3(N2) or H1(N1), that may be a blessing in disguise,” says Dr. Danuta Skowronski, an influenza epidemiologist at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control.”

L I N K A batch of over 170,000 doses of H1 N1 flu vaccine have an issue that has resulted in a recall by the drug company Glaxo Smith Kline.  No numbers had been released to qualify how many of that batch had been used.

“Last week, the WHO said checks on many of the 30 deaths recorded following mass pandemic flu vaccinations had so far ruled out a direct link to the vaccines.

The fatalities made up a minute fraction of at least 65 million doses of swine flu vaccines which have been administered, said the WHO, citing data from 16 countries.”

Scary times indeed.    The Cornwall Free News suggests that you consult your family doctor if you have one to decide if you are to get the H1 N1 Flu Shot.   There’s a lot of information and misinformation out there and the best bet is to ask a trained professional what you should do.

Final EOHU H1N1 Immunization Clinic on November 27

After 4 weeks of running H1N1 immunization clinics, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit will be holding its last community clinic this Friday, November 27^th from 2 to 8 p.m. The clinic is open to everyone aged 6 months and over. Residents who haven’t yet received their vaccine, or children who need a second dose, will still be able to get the vaccine after November 27^th through participating healthcare providers, the Centre de santé communautaire de l’Estrie, or at an Eastern Ontario Health Unit office.

“We’ve been pleased with the turnout at the clinics,” states Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health. “Anyone who hasn’t yet received the vaccine is encouraged to get immunized. It continues to be the best way to protect yourself and others from getting ill with H1N1.”

Vaccine recommendations for children

According to the latest Ministry guidelines, children aged 6 months to under 3 years, as well as children between 3 and 9 years of age with an underlying medical condition, should receive two half-doses of the vaccine, given at least 21 days apart. Children who need a second dose after the November 27 clinic can receive their shot from a participating healthcare provider, the Centre de santé communautaire de l’Estrie, or at an Eastern Ontario Health Unit office. Healthy children between 3 to 9 years of age do not require a second dose.

The sudden outbreak of the H1N1 influenza has forced officials to respond quickly in order to stop the spread of the disease. Dr. Paul Roumeliotis CEO of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit is the man in charge of this task.

Since October 30^th there have been 42 clinics held in six different locations simultaneously over seven days. During these clinics, roughly 41,000 vaccines have been distributed. When asked if the EOHU had a target number of people they wanted immunized, Dr. Roumeliotis said, “I was hoping about 40-50% of the population at least.  Although the more we vaccinate, the more efficient we are in preventing the spread of the H1N1 disease in our community. So far the 41,000 doses represent a bit more than 20% of the population, and we still have three more immunization clinic days to go. Also we have just opened up the clinics too all, without any restrictions in terms of priority groups.”

The EOHU’s target is still a long way from being realized. There are no plans yet in motion to add more clinics to the schedule which ends next Friday. Dr. Roumeliotis explained the reasoning behind this when he said, “We will not extend our mass immunization clinics after November 27^th deadline. However we will be receiving a more stable vaccine supply over the next few weeks. We are planning to distribute vaccines through family doctors and community health centers. Also we will be offering vaccines at our health unit offices. The

H1N1 vaccine will be widely available for those who want it.”

Across Canada, reports of serious side effects have been surfacing due to the vaccine. In total, 36 cases of serious side effects have occurred, none of which in this community.  There have been reports of negative side effects in Eastern Ontario but none have been more than an allergic reaction according to Dr. Roumeliotis.

EOHU H1N1 Immunization Clinics Now Open to Everyone

As of this week’s clinics on November 19^th and 20^th, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit is expanding the H1N1 immunization program to everyone aged 6 months and over.

“We’re pleased to be able to open the clinics up to everyone,” states Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health. “We encourage everyone to get immunized. It continues to be the best way to protect yourself and others from getting ill with H1N1.”

Vaccine recommendations for children

According to the latest Ministry guidelines, children aged 6 months to under 3 years, as well as children between 3 and 9 years of age with an underlying medical condition, should receive two half-doses of the vaccine, given at least 21 days apart. Healthy children between 3 to 9 years of age do not require a second dose at this time.

To date, the total number of H1N1 vaccines administered in the five Eastern Counties is approximately 41 000.

L I N K That sounds like a lot of people killed; more than 9/11, but there are an awful lot more people that die each year from your average flu; usually from complications like pneumonia.

“the flu pandemic has infected an estimated 22 million Americans and put 98,000 in the hospital, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.”

They estimate that over 500 of those deaths were children.

“In an average flu season, about 36,000 Americans die and 200,000 are hospitalized with 90 percent of deaths and hospitalizations among people over 65.”

So that would mean 10 times as many die from your standard flu.   Yet every news site; including our own is writing about the flu “Pandemic”.

Sometimes the hype is worse than the bite.    Are you going to get the flu shot?

But based on these new estimates, the total cost is currently running at about $30 a shot –and climbing.”

Ow, double ow!   I am always a firm believe in following the money and in this case some drug companies are making an awful lot of money.

“Alberta has put its figure at $100 million.

By contrast, Alberta spends about $3.2-million on free seasonal flu shots annually.”

Alberta has a frugal system.  Imagine the increases in places like Ontario and BC?

“Dr. Richard Schabas, the medical officer of health for Ontario’s Hastings and Prince Edward Counties Health Unit tells the Globe he thinks swine flu has been “the most overhyped, overblown exercise I’ve ever been a part of,” noting that the virus is not causing high rates of serious disease or death.”
