.

So off to the Summertown Trails I went to meet my friend and rent some snowshoes for an afternoon adventure. My expectation was that snowshoeing would be an easy way to trek through rolling terrain regardless of the snow depth. Having cross country skied through this same terrain years before I found it was easy going on the snow shoes and provided a firm platform for my feet any time I wished to stop and take a photograph.

.

We breezed through about 7 km’s of trails. The one challenge I experienced on this day was the footwear I decided to wear. I wore a pair of boots which weren’t form fitting, they were a little on the large size and as such were rubbing on my heel. As we were heading back to the rental hut I was concerned that I might end up blistering my heel. In hind sight a good warm hiking boot would have served better.

It is amazing how an afternoon out in the great outdoors can completely empty our facilities of the cares and worries of day and re-energize us for demands of the days ahead. It was lovely to see families sharing some time and laughter together on the trails. This is an activity that I would recommend to anyone; it is fun, relaxing and in my opinion easy for anyone to participate in according to their fitness level and a great way to reconnect with the simplicity and peace that a natural surrounding has to offer. At Summerstown Trails You can rent skis ($9.00 plus HST) or snowshoes ($5.00 plus HST) at the parking lot every Saturday and Sunday in January/February, between 9 AM and 4 PM. The equipment fee covers the rental for the day or for a couple of hours. The 7 k.m.’s of trails that we covered on this wonderful day were groomed and well marked. These trails are located off of Hwy 27 in South Glengarry.

.

Equipment rentals can sometimes be arranged at other times for larger groups such as children’s birthday parties, workplace or family gatherings. Questions about such gatherings can be directed to Doug Boeckh, dougthecatvet@aol.com or 613-931-3264. Rental of equipment will only be available when the trails are groomed and operational and when the weather permits. One can expect in very cold or rainy conditions that the rentals would not be available.Snowshoeing is also available at the Gray’s Creek Conservation Area on the edge of Cornwall proper at 18045 County Rd #2. They also offer rentals of equipment. Further inquires about rentals, trails and hours of service may be directed to 613-938-3611 or visit their website, http://www.rrca.on.ca

The good doctor lashed out, and I have to admit, I agree with him, about the Cornwall Hospital policy of only hiring bilingual nurses full time.

LINK

“The reality is that the hospital functions virtually entirely in English, from the senior administration to the very board which approved the ad in question. I sat on the hospital board when French language testing was made policy; I, and the other two physicians who sat on the board, voted against this policy. We quite rightly made the point that nursing skills were more important to patient care than proficiency in French.”

Can anyone really argue that point; especially when there’s a shortage of nurses that qualify as whatever bilingual is interpreted to mean and non bilingual nurses rack up immense overtime hours.

In these days of watching every penny in the medical system does this make any sense?

Is it really about offering services in both official languages? Should that come ahead of offering the best possible services? Many I spoke with this afternoon were upset that they get labeled as “prejudiced or racist” to protest this policy pointing out this is a financial issue and right to work issue, and of course patient care issue in the end.

Cornwall Nurse Julie Johnston had the following to say:

Speaking French should not be requirement to attain employment. I would like to know how many doctors are bilingual?

To not get promoted to a full time job as a result of not passing their french exam is discriminatory. I speak French but would not pass their test.

.

I agree with Dr. Tombler 100%.

I could have been Asher Brown, Seth Walsh, Tyler Clementi or any of the other teens that recently ended their young, precious lives. I grew up in the 1970s when being gay was still considered to be a mental illness by some. I would go to sleep hoping not to wake up, simply because I liked men. While much has changed over the last 30 years, feelings of isolation remain, much of it brought on by peers.

Like those boys and so many others, I was bullied in school. I guess my locker had some pheromone that attracted people that hated people that were somewhat different, because in the first week of 7th grade a kid scraped the word “fag” on my locker with something sharp like a pocket knife or a nail. Even though I could only see that word when I fumbled with the combination, the sadness and loneliness that the word made me feel lingered in the back of my mind every day of those horrific three years, a feeling that continued until I finally came out publicly on television in 1993. This one act and other daily forms of abuse by my classmates changed my life and my ability to learn and participate in friendships and relationships. The fear that I had because I was different was so strong it convinced me not to attend college; I was not prepared for what the repercussions might be if people knew I was gay.

When I was in my 30s and starting to act, I was completely guarded with my secret, convinced I had to suppress it and pretend it was non-existent. It was so detrimental to me that I only wanted to be with other “professional” actors, where I felt safe. Where I knew that as long as I was in this box of mine, life was going to be safer. “Just DON’T be yourself.” That’s what I believed and in doing so, I missed so many potential experiences and relationships that I will never know what could have been.

I regret not having the experience of going though the same things at the same time as my peers. Folks often say, “You can go to college now.” Of course, it wouldn’t be the same. I often travel to universities to do stand-up or lecture, and I learn so much just being around students, faculty and members of gay-straight alliances. Recently, after a performance, I had a good cry when I was back in my hotel because I had been in the presence of these students who are not afraid of being out and accepting who they are. It impressed me immensely.

When I was 21, I made a call to a suicide prevention lifeline because I realized I needed help. I was starting to have thoughts of suicide and I needed someone to stop me, to save my life. I began seeing a counselor after that, who I knew kept everything confidential, but even with my back to her chair, I sat there and lied that I was bi-sexual, uncomfortable to even speak the truth to a professional. It was too hard and I was afraid for my life.

Career-wise, I wanted to be an actor while some in the industry would say I was “too light in the loafers.” Memories of all these kids who beat me up and humiliated me all through school came back to me repeatedly in my early years of pursuing my career. Being afraid of people and re-learning how to trust them is a daily reminder of where and how far I have come.

Now I am an actor, a comedian and an advocate for equality. I have been able to get past my childhood and work in my chosen profession. I also have been able to give back to my community by being chair of the Screen Actors Guild National LGBT Actors Committee and a mentor for LifeWorks, which supports LGBTQ youth between the ages of 12-24. I have also produced and performed in a comedy benefit for the past five years to raise money for these kids and to show them there is hope out there.

Doing service for others and accepting the support of others has been my way of healing. I have been able to overcome my feelings of not being “enough.” I came to realize that the thoughts in my head are just that and can go out as easily as they entered those many years ago. I can create a new life story by which to live my life. It’s 2010 and I don’t have to be that kid in the 1970s who was abused and suicidal anymore. I often wish I could take that kid by the hand and show him the life I have now and tell him, “It will get better. I’m someone. Someone with a life and someone that matters. Just like you do.”

Of course there are all forms of Bullying and to me Bullying is the end result of many things; most of which stem from fear, aggression, and what many call “the wolfpack” or “gang” because Bullies themselves tend to have been the victims of bullying; and only gain strength from the support of their groups and of course the silence of victims and bystanders.

These Cliques have to be smashed. The only way to end the cycle of bullying prevalent in our society is to end it; and that won’t be easy.

There are many more sad stories out there. The names above are just a small portion of the victims from 2011. There are no easy solutions either; but we’re going to try and examine some.

It’s funny. When I shared that I was starting this series there was some interesting local reaction. A local photographer I’d asked to help and claimed he had no time decided to create his own Anti-Bullying project and another local paper did a front page spread!

It’s great to see how we can inspire others for a good and grave cause.

What we also will be doing is selling the t-shirts modeled by Ashley. Proceeds are being shared out to the artist; John Lister, and we are will also be donating $1.00 per shirt to the local Big Brothers and Big Sisters for this first one as they are Ashley’s Charity of Choice, and we may branch out to other charities with the next round.

They are available locally at Island Ink Jet – 8 3rd Street West in Cornwall Ontario – corner of Pitt Street across from the Royal Bank.

This first batch of shirts is available in XL in either black or white. We are securing another supplier and will be hoping to offer ladies shirts as well as other options. You can can also place your order at the Island Ink Jet store if you need other sizes.

And also from Ashley:

Bullying does not only affect someone’s childhood, it can follow them all threw there lives. Ultimatley it can affect the outcome of there future. That does not tend to manifest threw our minds when making fun of, or bullying someone.

.
The guilt and regret that comes with bullying can eat at you and make you feel terrible about your actions.

.

Being bullied is a sad, confusing and almost an embarassing feeling. It can make you feel you feel so small and powerless.

.

Speaking up and reaching out to others about bullying does not show any weakness, it infact shows strength and courage.

Henry Miller is famously quoted as saying:

“the tragedy of it is that nobody sees the look of desperation on my face. Thousands and thousands of us, and we’re passing one another without a look of recognition.”

It’s common knowledge that One in five people in Canada experience mental health problems in their life time and the problem is we choose to ignore the suffering that exists and instead concentrate on ridicule and scorn instead of open discussion.

.

Instead of thought were quick to prosecute and judge without rational discourse as if ignoring problems makes everything better. Unfortunately, that’s non sequitur reasoning devoid of rectifying the problem, and without the benefit of a strong mental health association that provides a true network to support people with problems. Why does this concern me? Probably because of my own past experience dealt in a system that has limited resources or assistance to cope with actually helping anyone and this is my attempt to address those concerns.

Recently I read an article on the globe and mail and have looked over Michael Kimber’s blog and after reading what Mrs Kimber has had to say I felt compelled to articulate my own sentiments on the subject, and hopefully express who I am as a person to someone who is willing to listen, so I could eliminate or decrease the stigma generally associated with People with mental health problems, because if you believe that blacks, homosexuals, religious minorities and the physically disabled should have their voices justifiably heard, then it should only be fair that those who have an alternative mental condition, be given the same chances and opportunities to express themselves and their concerns as anyone else.

There is a belief among the public that if you have no outward signs of physical limitations, then you are perfectly well, that whatever symptoms manifested stemming from an internal malaise are inventions of a theatrical or narcissistic personality, that keeping things to yourself will make everything better and the world will somehow function without the need to talk.

.

There is also a perception that if you are “mentally ill”, then you are threat to the general populace of society, and are considered violent or have a severe cognitive deficiency which impairs their ability to reason or critically think correctly and are “subhuman” and are marginalized and put into corners.

.

As someone who has been diagnosed as having high functioning autism called Asperger Syndrome I’ve spent most of my life hiding behind attempts to be normal or living behind walls just so that I could maintain the idea that I can fit, but have felt drowned in my attempts to be something which inherently I struggle with on a day to day basis – the facade of being normal.

When I was 17 my general problem was not trying to pick up the pretty girl in the biology class, or earning an A in math, or trying to get my driver’s licence, but just trying to get to school without the desire to cut myself with a razor blade so I could feel better. I never had the traditional teen age rebellion phase that other kids went through and still relied emotionally heavily on my mother for support then most of my peers, especially for friendship and acceptance.

.

The desire to hurt myself has always been stronger then the desire for procreation, and though I am functioning more adequately now then when I was several years ago. Although I have never engaged in a physical altercation with anyone and don’t condone the use of violence, I have harboured thoughts of such graphic intensity that I have needed to restrain myself into self confided solitary existence. I still struggle with just entering a building where there are lots of people- hell to me is a shopping mall at noon, sports events and loud crowds make the ability to hold thoughts together in a consistent format, however I function with a modicum of success.

Please do not think for one minute that I have not contributed, I am currently enrolled at St Lawrence college although it is on a part time basis, and have had work experience at Independent grocers and volunteered at the Agape center without being conditioned so by the 40 hour program of high school curriculum.

.

When the port theatre aired classic films, I made it a promise to support that endeavour by attending every month just to see the films, and would walk two miles in a snow storm just to see original John Carpenters “The Thing” on the big screen. I have even supported community endeavours including the make poverty history event held in September, although I struggle to be in classrooms with my peers, and there are days my head is unable to concentrate with being surrounded by people, I get through as best as I can, but only with counselling and being able to make contact with councillors on a weekly basis, without assistance of just talking to someone about my concerns and fears and rely on emotional support I wouldn’t be able to completely function.

As for the community of Cornwall offering assistance for mental health?, Good Luck to you. I have found you’re better off trying to solve problems on your own because No one is going to help… here’s a small scoop from the inside …

Places to go = Zero

The only knowing institute that Cornwall has for individuals associated with mental health problems is the Star Bright center located on Pitt St, opposite the Police department (and located near a liquor store if you like irony). Which from my experience of visiting several times found it to be a dismal and under run establishment, which doesn’t provide the benefits for individuals who are higher functioning and perform to greater performance then those who are lower functioning.

.

The staff can be clinically condescending and unconsciously supercilious, any attempt to engage them as a normal human being is almost always met with an astonishment that you can make critical thinking decisions on your own “While yes I happen to know how to draw up a balance sheet and make calculations on my own!”.

Star Bright is a perfectly apt place for individuals who are not fit for cognitive performance and need case workers to help them understand living arrangements, but it is a deplorable place for anyone who can think and reason without bedside assistance of mother bunch to make you feel better. From my experience there is no adequate support for those who have high functioning problems; Star Bright exists solely for those who cannot cope with the ability of living on their own, and if you want free cooking go on Wednesday.

Hospital cures? – are full of bad pills

Personally I have never visited the Cornwall general psych ward colloquially referred to as “third south”, though what I have heard has led me to conclude I would find more relief with a steak knife driving into my left thigh, then waiting four hours just to talk to someone who suggest I’m depressed (that’s sarcasm, us crazy people can joke). From what I have heard of third south is that it’s nothing more but a limited placebo, your there for three days, Doctors give you meds and then they ship you out again putting band aids on bullet wounds. Like I said this is only a secondary account, but having had meetings with the crisis team associated with the hospital, I will take a haphazard guess mental illness is universal in their profession.

Who you gonna call? – Best bet hot air

I’ve been told that for severe cases of depression and self harm to contact the Ontario crisis line, however the only remedy I’ve ever gotten out of that establishment is to rectify my life to make a positive commitment for myself, because talking to those people is like a really bad Monty Python sketch of gigantic absurd proportions (“you want to cut yourself and kill your family, now is that how you really feel?”). The crisis hotline are under staffed and run by amateurs who are familiar with textbook cases and are unable to make conversational connections without sounding like an automated machine. Try calling to test the theory and see exactly what I mean; you get an after school special and a pep talk from an infomercial.

On a side note if someone is suicidal and is calling for help. don’t have put them on call waiting and give them elevator music to listen to… that will proceed to make them MORE SUICIDIAL (that’s humour, though if I was forced to listen to Lady Gaga you can rest assured I’m going off to meet Vishnu)

Now Cornwall is not the only town, or city, that has this problem of being inefficient to assist individuals considered the pariahs of society. Cities such as Toronto and Montreal are well known for having decrepit mental health associations which rarely meet levels of satisfaction and adequacy. However these larger cities have communities which are supportive for people who have mental health issues, and as anyone who has lived in Cornwall long enough will tell you, this is not a town that is kind or benevolent towards anyone who approaches things with an “alternative mentality”, no offence if you read this far, but what I have personally experienced is a town that is hostile and xenophobic to anything that does not represent an established mentality to mainstream orthodoxy, and for minds outside of box and have little contact with a world they can’t relate to, it could be hypothesized that an individual will “loose it”.

.

I admire this town and believe it has some great beauty of eastern Ontario, yet at the same time the fiefdom mentality of some of the inhabitants makes it inhospitable for anyone to discuss problems openly without assigning blame on anyone and creating villains when in reality no one is a true bad guy. All I wish is educated reason and sincere humane compassion for all man not the facade of shallow etiquette perpetuated in an uncaring health care system.

Personally, as someone who has experienced mental health problems I have never wanted to exploit the system for hospital bed or a social worker, or a magic drug to make me like everyone else. All I want is an outlet where I can talk with someone of equal and benefiting courtesy, who understands that there are other ways of thinking. We have therapy sessions for cancer survivors, and programs that assists the poor and gay pride events, why is mental health issues never seeing in the same light? The minds darkest thoughts can be more terrifying then any incurable disease; it’s the cancer of the soul which robs us of authority to govern ourselves efficiently, yet anyone who admits a fault is guilty of being less then themselves and I find that sad.

Please understand that because of my condition, I am not in the traditional sense “mentally ill” I despise the word, as someone whose neurological networks and biochemical makeup are rewired differently telling me I’m “ill” is like saying someone who has dark melatonin is “pigmently challenged” or saying that a homosexual is a “sexual deviant”, which only creates the perception that they are abnormal.

.

The reality is, ethnicity and orientation are natural process of evolutionary mutation which add distinction to Homo sapiens collective. “Mentally ill” is offensive pejorative manufactured to provide people a semblance of artificial security from anyone who is slightly different, people who are Bipolar, schizophrenic or have high functioning autism can function normally when they are given the correct treatment that benefits them a chance to work within society.

I apologize it this sounds like self indulge whining and adolescent melancholy, but there are thousands of people privately fighting inside of their heads locked in universes of loneliness and despair, they simply don’t have guides towards. (Guess you know which philosophy subscribe to)

I am different, but I am still human and though I think and act in ways perceived by the dogmatic tenants of social and cultural homogenization to be “alien”, I still laugh, cry and have dreams like anyone else. “Prick us do we not bleed, wrong us do we not revenge”, Shylock was pariah of his era because of his religion, but he was still a man with his own passions, Shakespeare is still regarded because unlike anyone else he had an understanding of the human condition. A human condition that exists within all (wo)men -black, gay and non neurological mainstream, and every one of their voices needs to be heard, because in the end everyone of us just end up as bones.

The delegates did the right thing, and should be commended for their hard work, but the party will likely not follow up on this.

Not one single Liberal Candidate has the intelligence or the guts to campaign on this issue because not one single Liberal Candidate has the intelligence or the guts to explain to a voter what, exactly, “marijuana legalization” would even look like! (Ask one and see)

The media will not let them campaign on this issue, as the media has a well-established and long-standing anti-pot and pro-police bias. The coverage last week of the “pot not as bad as tobacco” study is a perfect example of that. And who do the media usually ask for “expert” opinion? Cops.

The media continue to let people lie about the supposed dangers of pot (already debunked by science and history), and give the Right a free ride when they talk wild hyperbole about the liberal party.

I am 42 years old an I don’t think I will ever see legalized pot in Canada – and I blame the media because they let people lie. If legal pot ever comes, it won’t come through Parliament, it will come the same way same sex marriage, abortion, and medical marijuana became legal: through the courts.

But then, there have already been seven court rulings that have effectively shot down the prohibition on pot, but the cops, the media, and other judges, simply ignore those rulings, and busts increase by 10,000 every year.

So, really, although this is a big push forward in many ways, I don’t see it as quite the victory many in the “pot movement” do.

.

Aside from having an interest in this on-line newspaper, I am also the only coffee roaster in the area that can bring you fresh roasted high quality coffee when you want it. Many of you have tasted my coffee at the Long Sault Farmer’s market this year, and a Cornwall market in previous years but are unaware that you don’t have to wait until summer to order coffee from me.

And what makes me such an expert? Besides over 35 years in the food industry doing product development and quality control for such companies as Canada Packers and George Weston Ltd, I have been roasting coffee as a hobby since 1998, and have received training at the Coffee Roasting Institute in San Francisco and at Robust Coffee in Toronto.

I only formalized my business in 2007 as a graduate of the SEA program at St. Lawrence College and have been growing ever since.

The Freshest Roasted Coffee

Of course there is my name. I have been accused of changing my name as a marketing ploy, but no, Coffey is the name I was borne with. It was my father’s family name and his father’s before that and so on as far back as the genealogy records will take us. It is the name on my birth certificate that was registered at the Cornwall General Hospital and the name on my high school diploma from St. Lawrence High School and my St. Lawrence College diploma. The Department of National Defence records listed me as Sergeant Coffey with the SD&G Highlanders when I finally resigned in 1975.

.

I only got into the coffee roasting business out of the necessity of not being able to find a good cup of coffee when I found myself living in Pennsylvania for 3 years.

The Coffee Growing Belt

Now I offer some of the finest coffees in the world at reasonable prices. Sourced from Oceania (Sumatra, New Guinea, Australian), Africa (Ethiopian, Tanzania), Central and South American (Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia) and the Caribbean (Dominican Republic and Jamaica), you can pick your favourite and I will roast it on demand to give you the freshest coffee you have ever tasted. I also carry a selection of organic and decaf coffee that will please your palette as well as your budget. The list of coffees and prices are available on my web site and I update them as my stock changes due to availability.

Coffee is not only a food staple for a large segment of the world’s population and the stuff that keeps the minds of its consumers alert, it is also being recognized for its healthy benefits. Just this past week an article was published in Healthzone.ca by none other than Dr. Oz that states that consumption of coffee has a preventative effect on certain types of cancer. The other health benefits of coffee are really extensive and deserve its own column so I won`t go into a lot of details today. One point though I would like to make is that adding the old double-double stuff does reduce the benefits of coffee so one piece of healthy advice is drink good stuff and drink it black if you can.

Health Zone Cancer Benefit Story Link

Currently my business is based in Ingleside and, except for some limited mail orders, my customer base is in the SD&G area exclusively. I am currently looking for commercial space to expand my operation but it will still be within an easy drive to Ingleside. Claiming to be the local coffee roaster in the area I guess you could ask me, just how local is local. My opinion is it depends on what is available in your area to how far out you can call local. If you have a farm that markets lamb within 20 km of your location how can you justify calling a supplier 100 km away in Ottawa local? Can you call sweet corn grown on the Niagara Peninsula local when you can buy corn grown in your own township? Now that is something to discuss over a nice hot cup of coffee, isn`t it?

Coffee’s Coffey is also available at fine dining establishments such as Knox Fine Dining in Moose Creek Ontario!

Getting funding for our health services, especially for the elderly and those less fortunate, is going to be a major challenge in the future.

The old General Hospital is presently an “Interim Long Care Facility” and with lengthy delays for long term health care, affordable assisted living and accessible housing there is no way that we should let that building be sold to the private sector.

The entire 2nd street site of the Cornwall Community Hospital should be used to address the needs of our aging population.

In order for us (Cornwall and SD & SG) to get our fair share we are going to have to be united and fight hard. We must protect and strengthen what we have.

My wish for 2012 is that we speak up and tell political leaders that we need these issues addressed. Our seniors have paid into the system for years and now that they need it some governments are talking cuts to health care.

CFN - Is it possible that the steak on your dinner plate this evening was glued together from left over parts, mixed with “meat glue” then rolled, refrigerated and sliced to look like a real fillet of beef? Apparently yes according to some information that landed in my inbox this last week.

Enter “transglutaminase”, more commonly known as meat glue. This is a powdered enzyme derived from beef and pork blood plasma. This mixed with various meat scraps is then kneaded together then rolled in a material such as waxed paper to allow the enzyme to react with the meat so that the scraps adhere together once being allowed to rest in the refrigerator for about six hours. Once the curing time is finished remove the paper and slice the now solid piece of meat into fillets for the grill or frying pan.The enzyme acts like a coagulant; binding the meat surfaces when mixed together.

So is this something that should concern us? According to The French Culinary Institute’s blog,( LINK) …meat glue is safe.

.

They say that transglutaminase, TG, is neutralized by most cooking processes. As TG is a powder it is recommended that masks be worn when working with the product so as not to inhale the powder.

.

“TG should not be consumed directly in large quantities however consuming TG in levels recommended for food usage is harmless.”

.

TG is “generally recognized as safe” by the US Food and Drug Administration. Further more the above site mentions studies which have come to opposite conclusions as to how the human body breaks down the protein bonded with TG. One study indicating difficulty breaking down the bonded protein and another showing the bonded proteins absorbed and broken down as if they had not been bonded.

The following video takes a look at how this glue is used in the marketplace. In this video concern is voiced about the higher likelihood of food poisoning from glued meat products, particularly when an item is cooked rare or medium rare. The bacteria count on a glued together steak is one hundred times higher as this cut now includes many more surfaces which have been exposed to the elements and are now glued together. For someone who relishes a rare or medium rare steak this now increases one’s risk to food borne bacteria.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo2S3Oqom5o

.
So we know that consuming food which has been treated with growth hormones, anti-bacterial agents or anti-biotics can affect our bodily functioning. Should we be concerned about what affect consumption of transglutaminase, a blood clotting substance will have on our bodies particularly if we consume the derivative product raw or rare?

.

I would certainly be talking to my health care professional if my current health situation was keeping an eye out for blood clots or if I was on a daily regime of blood thinners.

It’s a journey she knows first-hand.

A car accident in her early twenties left Ms. Hughes with serious injuries. After two surgeries, the Williamstown native emerged mobile, but suffering from chronic pain.

It was during her rehabilitation period that Ms. Hughes’ long road back to wellness began. She gradually embraced running, regular exercise and a return to a nourishing diet. The result was more energy, an end to the chronic pain and a newfound passion for health and wellness.

For the past 14 years, Ms. Hughes has drawn upon her global approach to health and her personal experience to help others, and she is taking it to a whole new level with the opening of RENEW Lifestyle Studio. Located at 424-E Fourth Street West in Cornwall, RENEW offers a range of fitness, dance, nutrition and detox classes as well as yoga classes and registered massage therapy.

The studio offers a unique and inviting environment where people can discover their best self.

“Our goal to empower our clients to feel great about how they look,” said Ms. Hughes, who is a registered massage therapist, a certified advanced Bowen therapist, a personal trainer, a CrossFit coach and a holistic lifestyle coach. “Your well-being is centered around healthy lifestyle choices, attaining balance and exuding happiness.”

Ms. Hughes lives by the same advice that she shares with her clients, namely to strive for balance and stop pursuing unrealistic notions of perfection.

“Beauty comes from within. When you feel good about yourself, and you listen to your body, you look great,” said Ms. Hughes.

One of the studio’s most popular offerings is its Women’s Fit Camp. This energizing class is designed to help women of all ages feel lean, strong and fit through functional and body weight exercise, kettle bells and metabolic conditioning.

The studio offers dance-oriented classes unique to Cornwall with burlesque and NIA instruction.

RENEW also offers a growing selection of products from other area businesses such as Ground Soap and grass-fed, hormone and antibiotic-free meats from Langview Farms.

“Heather has spent the last 14 years building up a sizeable client base in Cornwall and S. D. & G., “ said Candy Pollard, Business Consultant with the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre. “She has worked hard at building her networks in the medical and alternative therapy sectors and she knows how to deliver a quality service that people want. We wish her the very best in her new venture.”
