TORONTO, ON – Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI) today announced that it intends to conduct a voluntary safety campaign involving approximately 4,200 2000-2004 Model Year Toyota Avalons to address the possibility that the vehicle’s steering lock bar could break under certain conditions. No other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are involved in this recall.

Because of improper casting of the steering lock bar, which is a component of the steering interlock system, there is a possibility that a minute crack may develop on the surface. Such a crack may expand over a long period of repeated lock and unlock operations, and eventually the lock bar could break. If this occurs, the interlock system may become difficult to unlock when stationary.

If the vehicle while being driven is steered to the right with sufficient lateral acceleration, a broken and loose lock bar may move toward the steering shaft. If the engagement hole in the shaft happens to line up at the specific time the broken lock bar has moved, this could cause the steering wheel lock bar to engage, locking the steering wheel, and increasing the risk of a crash. Toyota is not, however, aware of any accident related to this condition. Continuing to work diligently to address safety issues wherever they arise and to strengthen global quality assurance operations so that Toyota owners can be confident in the safety of their vehicles, as part of the recall, Toyota will replace the steering column bracket on involved vehicles, a procedure that takes about two hours to complete depending on the dealer’s schedule. Toyota will notify owners by first class mail beginning in late August 2010 to bring their vehicles to their local Toyota dealer for replacement of the steering column bracket at no charge to the customer.

Detailed information and answers to questions are available to customers at www.toyota.ca and at the Toyota Customer Interaction Centre at 1-888-TOYOTA-8.

Cornwall ON - The results are in and Cornwall shoppers have spoken. The introduction of selected retail outlets would augment consumer shopping choices and could possibly reduce the outflow of dollars to other centres. That’s according to a comprehensive survey carried out by the Cornwall & Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Over 65% of the close to 500 respondents indicated they out-shopped at least once a month,” reports Chamber President, Jeff Bethune. “The results of the survey suggest that with the introduction of new stores, we could reduce and in some cases eliminate out-shopping.”

Close to 90% of respondents shopped in Cornwall at least once a week with the Brookdale Centre and Cornwall Square topping the destinations at 77.3% and 75.3% respectively. Eastcourt showed 34.9% with downtown Pitt Street at 24.8% and Le Village at 5.1%.

In the general retail sector, Old Navy topped the list followed by American Eagle, Gap, Children’s Place, Laura’s Roots, Jacob, Moores and Aeropostale. The Bay, with a minimal response ranked highest amongst department stores.

Specialty retailers included Future Shop, Chapters, Best Buy, Bulk Barn, Michael’s and Toys R Us, Sports Chek, Sports Experts, Aldo and Golf Town. Restaurants in demand included Starbucks, Montana’s, Red Lobster, Second Cup, Quizno’s Boston Pizza and Taco Bell.

Questions about service in Cornwall revealed that over 73% considered it to be about the same or better than other communities with just under 19% rating it ‘not as good’. 45% identified areas, or more specifically, stores in which they would not shop because of poor service.

“The Chamber will be sharing the survey results with the various shopping areas and BIAs and hopes to work collectively on a strategy that adds to our mix of retail stores and keeps our consumer dollars within the community itself,”

continued Bethune. A complete copy of the report can be found on the Chamber web site at www.cornwallchamber.com.

Cornwall ON - When Kris Rothley looks in her closet, often she can’t decide what to wear. Rothley, who is married and a mother of three, is also the Dean at the Ontario Hockey Academy. With a very busy lifestyle, she welcomes the Six Items or Less challenge to simplify her life.

Rothley read about Six Items or Less on the Internet. She was intrigued and wanted to try it herself. The challenge for participants is to wear only six articles of clothing for an entire month.

“I’m hoping to waste less time staring into a packed closet, and I look forward to the money I will save by not buying clothes for a month”.

Rothley is well acquainted with challenges. From running a marathon to university studies, she has challenged herself both athletically and academically, and has had success in her endeavours. She has degrees from M.I.T, Cornell University, and a Ph. D from Yale.

One obstacle for Six Items or Less is choosing just six items of clothing out of all the choices in the closet. Another part of the challenge is wearing different combinations of those six items and diversifying them with accessories. The six items does not include accessories, undergarments, work uniforms, work out clothing, jackets, shoes, or swimwear.

“I want to make space in my closet and do something positive by donating some of the clothes that do not make the six item cut-off to the Agape”.

The Six Items or Less website does not adhere to a philosophy or ideology. It is simply a challenge for people to try. But regardless of the indent, the experiment has deeper implications.

All clothing produced and purchased has an ecological footprint. From extracting resources, to manufacturing, transportation, and washing clothes, all these things have an impact on the environment.

Many people have an abundance of stuff they don’t really need or use, so an experiment like Six Items or Less is an opportunity to reflect upon this.

Rothley is going to blog about her experiences and take photos and post them as well.
