The Cornwall Underground on Seaway Radio plays an eclectic mix of punk, metal, ska, alternative and indie rock music. Cornwall ON - So did you get the latest mailing from our MP Guy Lauzon?  You know the MP that refused to wish Happy Canada Day to the 20,000+ viewers of  The Cornwall Free News. Guy and the Harper government are concerned about us taxpayers.   They’re concerned about accountability, and how your dollars are being collected.

I give Mr. Lauzon credit for keeping this epic smaller than the Standard Freeholder as his last one actually weighed more than that days paper (yes, we weighed the mailer versus the paper that day.) and that’s not meant as a flame in anyway to the Free Holder.

….families deserve to keep their hard earned dollars….families lose millions because faulty measurement devices like weight scales and gas pumps…to crack down on dishonest business practices….

So let me understand this Mr. Lauzon.   You are so concerned about we Canadian taxpayers that you’re taking this action?   $16 BILLION dollars for fighter’s we most likely would never use to full need; over $1 BILLION dollars on the G20, and while hospital beds are needed in your riding, and you’re sending out a mailing about gas pumps?

And you sir voted for the HST and that comes with it?  You’re concerned about the tax burden of your constituents?

Cornwall ON - Polls indicate that the Conservatives might form another government if an election is held today. But Michael Ignatieff who visited Cornwall is trying to change that.

Ignatieff who is the leader of the official opposition in the House of Commons is on a six week tour this summer trying to drum up Liberal support.

Winning ridings like SDSG and having Bernadette Clement elected are key if the Liberals hope to form a government.

The first day of the tour had a rocky start. After stops in Hawkesbury and St. Albert’s where Ignatieff bought cheese, the Liberal boss had a hard time getting to his next stop.

The Liberal bus broke down delaying his visit to Cornwall by about two hours. Later that night Ignatieff would joke that Steven Harper was seen lurking in the shadows with motor oil on his hands.

About 200 loyal Liberal supporters were ready for a summer BBQ, but instead they had to endure rain and a lightning storm.

Before the storm hit, Jim Brownell and Bernadette Clement were shaking hands and mingling with the crowd outside.

Former SDSG Liberal candidate Denis Sabourin was barbequing, while event coordinator and local school teacher Tracy Champagne was setting up Canadian flags and red and white balloons.

When the storm hit, the crowd went inside. Joel Sauve provided entertainment, playing acoustic guitar in the un-air-conditioned building, as Liberal supporters waited patiently for their leader to arrive.

When Ignatieff arrived, the crowd cheered and clapped. Dressed in a plaid shirt, jeans, and boots, he shook hands and talked to Cornwall residents in attendance.

When Clement was on stage, she talked about how the Conservatives represent “the politics of grudge”. She has a vision of Canada where political parties work together instead of holding grudges.

Ignatieff addressed several issues to the Cornwall crowd. He believes governments should invest in infrastructure and children.

Ignatieff made it clear he does not want tax dollars to be wasted like the current government is doing.

He brought up the Conservatives billion dollar boondoggle at the recent G8 and G20 meetings. “I won’t spend a billion dollars on a photo opportunity that shuts down Toronto”.

He also asked the crowd to help the Liberal Party.

“Dig deep, call people, talk to people, talk to that cranky Conservative who lives down the street. The NDP is fine, but they are not going to form government. We need to extend, extend, this big red tent in the centre”.

Ignatieff told the Cornwall crowd he wants Clement elected. “I need Bernadette Clement in the House of Commons. I need you to help me get her their”.

Ignatieff also addressed the issue of the bridge dispute. He said SDSG deserves better than Guy Lauzon.

“The federal government has to get involved, get mediation, we can’t have the Cornwall economy held hostage by this dispute… everyone is critical of Mr. Lauzon‘s absence on this issue.”

According to Ignatieff, “Bernadette Clement has been working hard on this issue and is heavily engaged,  and I respect what she’s trying to do”.

Liberal Candidate Bernadette Clement Announces Michael Ignatieff Liberal Express Tour Coming to Cornwall

Cornwall ON - Stormont Dundas South Glengarry Federal Liberal candidate Bernadette Clement today announced that Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff will be in Cornwall On Tuesday, July 13 2010, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

“We are very pleased that Cornwall is one of the first stops on the first day of the Leader’s very important cross country tour. This will give residents of Stormont Dundas South Glengarry the opportunity to see firsthand the true Michael Ignatieff, a leader that listens, cares and wants to help Canadians by making a difference in government,” said Ms. Clement.
Mr. Ignatieff with Ms. Clement will greet residents of the riding at Dream Builder Studios at 2107 Second St. West, Cornwall, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m..

Claude Poirier, President of the Stormont Dundas South Glengarry Federal Liberal Association, announced the association will host a barbeque and that everyone is invited to attend this special summer gathering.

Ms. Clement added, “our leader Michael Ignatieff has demonstrated a strong understanding of rural urban ridings like Stormont Dundas South Glengarry, residents of the riding will be able to hear first hand Liberal plans that will benefit all Canadians. I look forward to welcoming residents of the riding at this special visit.”

Cornwall ON - Kudo’s to Cornwall Ontario City Councilor Ms Bernadette Clement who is also the Federal Liberal Candidate in SD&SG in the upcoming election.    She’s also my opponent in the upcoming election, but Ms Clement is a very classy person, and politician.

In the time I’ve spent so far observing, and now participating in politics there’s a lot of ritual.  A lot of rules you follow. For instance when you lose an election you always congratulate the winner no matter how sleazy and slimy they may be.  It’s a ritual.

Politician’s have codes they follow as I’m quickly learning.   There’s just certain behavior to follow and practice if you want to be considered professional.   Ms Clement and Ms Darlene Jalbert, who’s the NDP Federal candidate in this riding understand that.  Maybe Female politicians play differently than we boys?  Maybe both of these women are simply better people than um, erm…..

As a Newbie candidate it really was appreciated when Ms Clement approached me at the Summer Company meet n greet tonight.  She offered me her hand and wished me good luck.   A bit of banter and much laughter by both of us.

Every politician has a first day on the job and today was mine.  It was a lovely day, and the first in a journey that will be I’m sure quite an interesting one.   As some of you know I’m keeping a journal and will be working on a documentary film of my political journey.

I want to also thank all of you who have shared your opinion to me via email, facebook, phone calls, and one fax!   While most have been congratulatory I don’t mind the few questioning my sanity or some of the other interesting suggestions.

My election website will be up soon and ready to be a place to share my platform and get the ball rolling on what many feel will be a Fall election call.

Cornwall ON - Well it`s official.    Your humble editor of The Cornwall Free News is officially the Green Party of Canada Federal candidate for SD&SG.     It`s going to be a challenging race as I have some exceptional candidates from the other parties to best including incumbent Guy Lauzon of the Conservative Party of Canada, Bernadette Clement of the Liberal Party of Canada and Darlene Jalbert of the New Democratic Party of Canada.

It`s going to be a fun summer indeed!

Cornwall ON - There’s a trend in politics of passing the buck, especially in some potentially dynamic issues.   Don’t want to ask for a raise?  Form a committee to come up with a solution.   Don’t want to tackle a tough issue?  Form a committee.

Well people in Cornwall love their dogs.  There are an awful lot of dogs in the area too, and there’s no shortage of parks or land in Cornwall.

However dogs are not allowed off leash or in parks.   Sure there are liability issues, but you’d think that as progressive a city management and council as we have there’d be a remedy to this?

A group was formed with the sole mandate of creating a dog park in Cornwall.   For some reason it was quite secretive and some have suggested cliquish.     Many sites were mentioned, some fundraising done, meetings with our MP, a presentation to council, etc, but we still don’t have a dog park.

Now in a recession and with a council focusing on keeping taxes down you don’t want to write cheques willy nilly, but surely there are some options that Cornwall could initiate and “Git er done”.

How about designating at least one park in Cornwall “Leash Friendly”?    Why should it be taking this long for such a simple project?     Hopefully during the upcoming municipal elections some of the candidates for council will come up with some solutions for the thousands of residents here in Cornwall that want a place to take their dogs; maybe even one near the 401 which could potentially attract the thousands of people that drive by our city without stopping and visiting?

Regarding the recent announcement of the new “Police Motorcycle”, really begs the question, why are we not sharing this service with the OPP?

Recently, our city police force gave up on our “police dog” program, opting for sharing the service with the OPP.

Our taxpayers are being stretched to the limit and it’s time we consider all our options, with respect to any of the services our city provides.
