RCMP seized nearly 6,000 resealable bags of cigarettes from a garage and a van parked near a Williamstown residence in South Glengarry early last week. A 38-year-old and a 50-year-old, both from Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, and four younger man, aged between 20 and 26, were arrested and charged.

Four More Arrested for Possession of Contraband Cigarettes

    CORNWALL, ON, March 3 /CNW/ - A 46 year old male resident from Gatineau,
Quebec and three female residents from Akwesasne, Ontario ages 18, 19 and 32
all face charges by the RCMP for possession of a tobacco product not properly
stamped under authority of the Excise Act 2001.
    On February 27th, 2009, officers from the Canada Border Services Agency,
the Cornwall RCMP Detachment and the OPP observed a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo travel
from Akwesasne, Ontario and was stopped by the OPP officers on Cornwall Centre
Road in Cornwall, Ontario. Officers observed cardboard boxes of contraband
cigarettes and arrested the 46 year old male driver from Gatineau, Quebec.
RCMP officers seized 1,200 resealable bags of contraband cigarettes as well as
50 resealable bags of Discount brand cigarettes. The vehicle was also seized.
The driver will appear at the Cornwall court on April 30th, 2009. He was also
issued a Highway Traffic Act ticket for failing to surrender a driver's
licence.
    On March 2nd, 2009, officers from the same agencies as well as from the
Ontario Ministry of Revenue observed a 1998 Nissan Ultima travel from
Akwesasne, Ontario and was stopped by the OPP at the intersection of Tollgate
Road and McConnell Avenue in Cornwall, Ontario. Officers observed cardboard
boxes of contraband cigarettes inside the vehicle and arrested the 19 year old
female driver and 18 year old female passenger both from Akwesasne, Ontario.
RCMP officers seized 200 resealable bags of contraband cigarettes as well as
400 resealable bags of Discount brand cigarettes. The vehicle was also seized.
The driver and passenger will appear at the Cornwall court on April 9th, 2009.
The driver was also issued Highway Traffic Act tickets for driving a motor
vehicle with no licence and using a licence plate that is not authorized for a
motor vehicle.
    Later the same date, officers observed a 2003 Ford Explorer travel from
Akwesasne, Ontario and was stopped by OPP officers on Highway 401 eastbound in
South Glengarry, Ontario. Officers observed cardboard boxes of contraband
cigarettes and arrested the 32 year old female resident from Akwesasne,
Ontario. RCMP officers seized 1,050 resealable bags of Discount brand
cigarettes as well as the vehicle. The driver will appear at the Alexandria
court on April 8th, 2009.
    "What is alarming is that in the last vehicle stop the driver was
travelling with her teenaged daughter while cardboard boxes of illegal
cigarettes were being transported in plain view", said Sgt. Michael Harvey
from the RCMP. "There are parents who will use their children to divert the
attention from law enforcement in order to commit criminal activities. They
demonstrate no concern for the welfare of their children".

An Ottawa Man and Cornwall Man Held In Custody for Possession of Contraband Cigarettes

CORNWALL, ON, March 3 /CNW/ – A 27 year old male resident from Ottawa, Ontario and a 39 year old man from Cornwall, Ontario were arrested and charged for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped under authority of the Excise Act 2001. On February 26th, 2009, officers from the Canada Border Services Agency, the Cornwall RCMP Detachment and the OPP observed a 2009 Chrylser 300 travel from Akwesasne, Ontario to 9th Street in Cornwall, Ontario where it was stopped by officers from the OPP. The driver handed over the keys to the vehicle admitting he was transporting contraband cigarettes. RCMP officers seized 595 resealable bags of contraband cigarettes as well as the vehicle. The driver identified as Steven Raymond, a 27 year old male resident from Ottawa, Ontario was arrested and charged for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped. He was held in custody for a bail hearing to take place at the Cornwall court. Later on the same date, the same law enforcement agencies observed a 1999 Chrysler Intrepid travel from Akwesasne, Ontario to Highway 401 eastbound where officers from the OPP stopped the vehicle in South Glengarry, Ontario. During the stop the driver struck the police vehicle in an attempt to avoid arrest. Officers removed the driver from the vehicle and observed resealable bags of contraband cigarettes. The driver identified as Nicholas McKenna, a 39 year old male resident from Cornwall, Ontario was arrested and charged for various charges including possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped as well as for outstanding arrest warrants for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped and failing to appear at court for previous charges. He is also prohibited from driving a motor vehicle. RCMP officers seized 1,050 resealable bags of contraband cigarettes and the vehicle. Nicholas McKenna was held in custody for a bail hearing at the Cornwall court. “We are seeing an increase in repeat offenders continuing to be involved in the illicit tobacco trade”, said Sgt. Michael Harvey from the RCMP. “Repeat offenders are being sentenced to serve time in prison when found guilty. It is the attraction of quick and easy money that makes it difficult for them to stop”.
