Is Cornwall Island Part of Canada?

I’m not a political scientist.   I’m not a geographer.   In other words I’m not an expert on this area, but I have politicians, and people of all sorts talk to me about some of the fundamentals of the Bridge Crisis which I’ve covered here in this paper.

I am of the belief that Cornwall Island is a part of Canada; IE Canadian territory, but there are people on the Island that state otherwise and then I read a news story like this ONE that confuse the heck out of me.

“The Crown issued orders respecting our sovereignty.  On October 23, 2008, Prothonotary Mireille Tabib ordered the two women to pay for Canada’s costs by depositing $19,460.00 with the court plus all subsequent costs.  The reason!  They live in Akwesasne and Kahnawake and are not residents of Canada.”

So is Akwesasne a foreign country or in this case are these people considered aliens?   I’m not sure any of  these issues will ever be resolved.  I have a fairly good IQ and while listening at the tent recently I just got lost trying to get a handle on who owns what, why, how, etc.

So I’m going to throw out a few questions and maybe some of our readers will venture an answer or two.

Who really owns Cornwall Island?

Do the residents  of Akwesasne consider the MCA to truly represent them?

If not who really speaks for Akwesasne or the residents of the Island?

If all the claims I hear have grounds why aren’t they in the court system?  If not the Canadian one, the International one at The Hague?

What will it take to resolve local issues?

It’s your turn readers.

  1. Yes it is confusing….

The residents of the island are against the CBSA arming because they claim it diminishes their sovereignty. However, the same people seem to be indignant when they are forced to stop at the temporary border post because ‘they never left Canada’.

I think the claims aren’t in a court system somewhere because it is in some peoples best interest. It is preferable that the matter remain grey in an attempt for some to eat their cake and have it too.

You can see certain parties in Quebec trying to create a similar grey area.
