Lost Da Vinci Painting Discovered? Boston Rumours Fuel Frenzy In Art World – January 6, 2010

Could a lost Da Vinci painting  turn up in at a Boston Museum shortly?  Nobody is saying anything.

Well reporters are saying a lot; but so far nothing’s been confirmed.

L I N K “* The Washington Post receives a tip from a source who wishes to remain anonymous that the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has in its possession a painting believed to be by the Italian master, and is in the process of authenticating it. Were it deemed a true Leonardo, such a painting would be only the second one in all the Americas. “

“It was a huge deal when the National Gallery landed its Da Vinci. It was purchased in 1967 for $5 million, at the time the highest price ever paid for a work of art. When J. Carter Brown, the National Gallery’s director, got his hands on it, his counterpart and archrival at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Thomas Hoving, “was beside himself,” the Post’s Matt Schudel reported after Hoving’s death in December.”

The wait is probably going to be a lot more exciting than the result.   In the meanwhile it gives art fans something to talk about through this cold and miserable winter.

Here in Cornwall Ontario it should also give those working on our new arena project something to consider.  And those at City Hall who agreed to write the cheque to pay for the project.

Arena’s; like buildings, come and go.  Art lasts forever.

What do you think Cornwall?  Is there really going to be a new Da Vinci painting discovered?

  1. Rumor has it the new Da Vinci at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is the same one that turned up in October called “Young Girl In Profile In Renaissance Dress”. This painting was matched with a Da Vinci fingerprint form the “St Jerome in the Wilderness” painting in Rome. Futher scientific test are underway to confirm whether or not this painting is actually a Da Vinci. My understanding is it was bought by a Candanian for $19,000 dollars sold as a 19th Century German painting. I get the feeling this may be the real deal. Will have to wait as there are a lot of sceptics out there.
