Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) first stand-alone public health unit in Canada to achieve full Qmentum Accreditation Status – Cornwall Ontario – February 10, 2010

EOHU Achieves Accreditation Milestone

In December 2009, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) became the first stand-alone public health unit in Canada to achieve full accreditation status with Accreditation Canada. The Qmentum accreditation is awarded to organisations that reach a high level of performance, and comes after a rigorous review of the EOHU’s health system performance, risk prevention planning, client safety, performance measurement, and governance.

“We’re very proud to announce that the EOHU met or exceeded all requirements for the three-year Qmentum accreditation status,” declares Board of Health president Jim McDonell. The EOHU scored well above national compliance rates in most categories of the accreditation report. Surveyors identified no areas in the organisation that required high priority action to address concerns.

“While there’s no doubt that parts of the public health system are experiencing considerable pressure at the moment,” McDonell adds, “this achievement demonstrates that there are also areas of excellence and leadership in the field.”

According to Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health, the achievement reflects the hard work and commitment of EOHU employees to provide high quality health services within the five Eastern Counties. “A consistent theme in the surveyor feedback is the dedication and enthusiasm of staff, and the Health Unit’s zeal for continuous quality improvement,” Roumeliotis says. A proven commitment to continuous quality improvement is a major cornerstone of Qmentum accreditation.

The EOHU marks this accomplishment as it is about to commemorate the anniversary of another important “first” in its history. In 2010, the Health Unit will celebrate the 75th anniversary since it opened its doors as the first health unit in Canada.

  1. Lets face it, we deserve the best!

  2. Do we really need Accreditation Canada? Could that money not be better used for front line health care?
I am happy for the EOHU of course, but if we keep doing things the way we have been, do not expect different cost efficient results!

  3. With such a wonderful Health Unit, you think we would be the healthiest community in the country!Hmmmm?
