Federal Politicians Trying to Wipe Their Hands and Pass Medicare to the Provinces – Cornwall Ontario – April 16, 2010

Cornwall ON – The Federal government and many Federal politicians seem to be racing to get as far away from Medicare as possible.  They would rather wash their hands of it all than fix the system.  They simply wish to pass the buck to the Provinces whom of course all have different ideas.

Now since most of the funding comes through Provincial coffers they of course should have input; but this fundamentally is a problem with the system.

Medicare was never meant to be a provincial program.  It was not conceived that way; but has been a recent development and if it happens could lead the end of our country as we know it.

The sad thing is that there’s no real reason for this other than the lobbying and wishes of certain industries with the ear of the government and politicians; an ear that most citizens don’t have and never will.

If you actually talked to most Canadians I think you’d come to a clear conclusion; that our health care is very important to us and of all the things government spends money on is the one thing we shouldn’t be messing with.

A recent story by Jeffrey Simpson of the Globe and Mail makes some interesting points which I’d like to rebut.

The federal cash merely prevented the system from deteriorating. It certainly did not “buy change” such that yearly spending would stop rising above the inflation rate, government revenues or spending on other programs.

I would agree; pouring cash into a problem without tackling the real issues is never a real solution.   A generation of politicians simply bought time at the expense of future generations and the cost to fix the system, on all levels is now much greater.

We as Canadians must take back healthcare.  We must communicate to our politicians what we want; and we need to force politicians to focus on this issue and find ones that will actually start the process of saving Medicare while there’s something to be saved.

  1. I know what I don’t want, and that is the full brunt being taken by the end user. Each province already has much of the control, but just keep pouring money into the system.

something like 46 cents of every tax dollar going to Toronto goes to healthcare. Pause for dramatic effect.
