Cornwall Ontario Honoring Newsy Lalonde with Roadway – Wednesday September 22 at Noon

Cornwall ON – The City of Cornwall will be holding a media conference to announce the naming of a roadway in honour of Newsy Lalonde, along with the unveiling of a bronze plaque and mural to recognize this accomplished hockey and lacrosse player.

Edouard “Newsy” Lalonde was born in Cornwall and is considered by many to be hockey’s very first “superstar”.  He helped the Montreal Canadiens to its first ever Stanley Cup Championship. Mr. Lalonde is also considered one of the best ever lacrosse players. He is a member of the Hockey and Lacrosse Halls of Fame, and also served as the head coach of the Ottawa Senators between 1929 and1931, and of the Canadiens between 1932 and 1935. Mr. Lalonde is also a member of the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame.

Mayor Bob Kilger, members of City Council, and executives from the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame will be joined at this exciting ceremony by two very special guests from the Montreal Canadiens organization – Henri Richard and Réjean Houle.

Henri Richard
With 11 Stanley Cup rings to his credit, Henri Richard has won more championships than any other athlete in North American professional sport history. Nicknamed the “Pocket Rocket” in reference to his brother Maurice, he is among the Montreal Canadiens’ all-time Top 10 in every major offensive category.  His jersey number “16” has been retired and he is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.He currently serves as an ambassador to the Canadien organization.

Réjean Houle
One of the most popular public faces linked to the long history and rich tradition of the Montreal Canadiens, Réjean Houle appeared in over 700 games, amassing 456 points and earning five Stanley Cups. The man known as “Peanut” to friends and fans alike has remained with the organization since his retirement as a player.  He became President of the Canadiens Alumni in 1983, a position he has held ever since, taking time off to serve as GM from 1995 to 2000.

The announcement will be made outdoors at the entrance to the Cornwall Civic Complex (located at 100 Water Street East) at Noon on Wednesday September 22. The Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame (located at the Civic Complex) will be open to the public.

All members of the media and public are urged to attend.  This event will be of interest to all Cornwall citizens and sport fans.

  1. Where is the roadway??? Is it the entrance and exit way to the Complex??
