Cornwall Ontario Honours Ed “Newsy” Lalonde with visit from Montreal Canadiens Legends Rejean Houle & Henri Richard – September 22, 2010

Cornwall ON – It was a great day for Habs Fans and Hockey fans today in Cornwall Ontario.    My former boss Rejean Houle showed up with this tiny pocket of Hockey history; the man with the most championship rings from the four major sports, Henri Richard.

Family members and friends chat about Newsy and his day.

It was a celebration for Cornwall’s own Ed “Newsy” Lalonde.

Cornwall unveiled a plaque and named a lane after the legendary athlete who had members of his family present for the event.

Rejean jokingly asked Henri what it was like to play with Newsy which brought a roar from the starry eyed fans!

Mayor Kilger, a former NHL referee during Mr. Houle and Richard’s playing years was on hand to make presentations and wax poetically about the significance of the day.

The event even drew media as far away as Ottawa as CTV’s Carolyn Waldo and crew were present.   Montreal opens its pre-season tonight which gave the crowd a bigger buzz; many of whom went inside for an autograph session.

Hockey fans young and old were treated to some great chat from the legends of yesterday and unlike some players these gentlemen didn’t get up until everyone that attended had an autograph.

There were businessmen, lawyers, politicians, and even a few teachers in the crowd.

It was really heart warming watching the smiles on some very old “little boys” as they brought their hockey cards, sticks, photos, jerseys and other souvenirs for these Habs greats to sign.

It was indeed a day to be proud of our heritage here in Cornwall Ontario and to honour one of the Sporting greats of this city, Ed “Newsy” Lalonde!
