Cornwall ON – It’s raining as I type this here in Cornwall Ontario. After last week’s flooding that impacted over 500 homes many are fearing more damage as we expect an awful lot of rain over the next two days.
We received this Letter to the Editor from Sue-Ann Lovejoy.
I am writing in regards to how it amazes me how Cornwall strives to be the best city for families, hard workers etc…
HOWEVER when we are faced with a emergency situation they are no longer there for us (so we think!) I have had the unfortunate experience of helping my friend who lost EVERYTHING in the heavy rain that we had last Thursday.
She is a single mother of 2 children and works very hard at being a mom to them. They don’t have very much but what they do have she worked very hard for. She did have insurance (received Sept 22nd 2010) 8 days before the flood but her insurance would only cover half and there would be a 1000$ deductible.
Where is she going to get that kind of money. With this being said I have found out “through the grapevine” that our lovely city has a insurance policy to help the citizens in their time of need when it comes to sewer back up’s and such that IF your insurance doesn’t cover all of your damages theirs will cover the rest!
Why wouldn’t they tell us this? Don’t you want to help your city? Also because her Landlord isn’t doing his legal obligations for her as a tenant she’s also just found out about the Legal Clinic which will help her with her tenant rights!
I think that we have taken a great passive approach to this city and we need to find out these things. There are too many citizens that are out there who are in need and have no clue where to go. So much for helping out the families and the hard workers huh?

We’re going to be trying to organize a fund raising evening to help those in need and in the meanwhile will be asking many of the local resources to communicate to the public here at the Cornwall Free News so we can assist as best as possible.

We all just need to pull together and help each other the way people did during the ice storm.
As a result of the misinformation in the above Letter to the Editor, the City would like to respond by saying that the Corporation of the City of Cornwall does not have an insurance policy to assist the citizens in Cornwall.
Residents that have experienced damages to property and personal belongings, as a result of flooding from the severe weather conditions experienced on September 30, 2010, are encouraged to contact their own insurance company to determine the coverage available to them.

Insurance does not cover sement floods unless there is a municipal issue or the sump pump craps out.
Why does Cornwall not have any money for the citizens, here is our typical stimulus package
It is a slow day in the small town of Cornwall Ontario and the streets are deserted.Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living on credit. A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the motel, and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night. As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op. The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her “services” on credit. The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner. The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveller will not suspect anything. At that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 and leaves. No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now out of debt and looks to the future with a lot more optimism.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a Stimulus Package works.
