Cornwall ON – Limewire, the music sharing service has been shut down by Court injunction. After losing a copyright infringement case several months ago the writing was on the wall for the pioneer in music sharing technology.

“We are extremely proud of our pioneering history and have, for years, worked hard to bridge the gap between technology and content rights holders,” Mr. Searle said. “However, at this time, we have no option but to cease further distribution and support of our software.”
Limewire Chief Exec Mr. George Seale stated that the company was going to be coming out with a new music service in the future.

Good riddance! Limewire has always been a horrible source to acquire music anyway and having a computer technician in my family have only ever heard the horror ‘virus’ stories acquainted with Limewire use. There are plenty of other sites out there to get music/movies/etc without paying a dime. I stopped using Limewire years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I will always support the ‘little guy’ when it comes to music…the local musicians just trying to break into the scene with their debut albums and such. I will always support them buy purchasing a hard copy and I will convert it to mp3 for my own use (meaning it does not get shared with anyone online!)
When it comes to the big names; the ones that make millions touring the world and charge monstrous amounts for concert tickets or the ones that feel stopping in a city close to me is ‘beneath’ them….if people want their music, they’ll find a way to get it for free.
It doesnt stop piracy.

I don’t know if any of you know this, but in a huge percentage of music out there, the files where they’re corrupt, or you catch viruses from, well thats mainly the music/movie industry rolling out bad copies or virus laden copies to mess up the systems of the music/movie downloaders out there.. And hate to say it Jason, but frostwire will be soon to follow in the fateful steps of Napster/Limewire, and posting that you use it, only makes it more possible for authorities to go and track those programs instead after the fact.. If you do any illegal downloading, you should just keep your mouth shut.. Else face the wrath of the big producers.. They do specifically hunt down people that say they use software to illegally obtain music/movies.. 😉
The real problem is that this is likely to become a gateway decision, meaning other courts will use this as precedent to shut down all other music/movie sharing sites. This stuff might be out there on other sites and readily available now, but if this trend continues, it will be short lived and that’s the sad truth of our over-regulated world.
