Cornwall ON – Every child loves to play in the snow, but there are dangers to playing too close to roads and fast moving vehicles. City staff would like to remind parents to teach children about the dangers of playing and tunnelling in snow banks.
Tunnelling in snow banks may seem like fun, but can be quite dangerous. From collapsing tunnels. to falling onto the road in front of cars, to interactions with snow plows themselves, roadside snow banks are no place for children.
Snow plow operators do their best to ensure everyone’s safety, but cannot realistically check each snow bank for children as they travel down the road.
Here is a quick list of safety tips you should review with your children:
- Never walk and slide on snow banks
- Never build snow tunnels as they may collapse and may risk suffocating under the snow.
- Move well out of the way from oncoming road plows, sidewalk plows and trucks
- Don’t play games on the roadway – there are plenty of safe locations to play games.
The City’s Municipal Works Safety Department, Equipment Operators and Contractors wish you a safe and wonderful winter season.
On New Year’s Eve, the People Mover Transit Authority, a not profit community organization and Cornwall Transit will offer free bus service to Cornwall residents attending one of 7 local restaurant/bars.
“We are working together with Cornwall Transit to help residents get home safely after ringing in the New Year” said Daniel La Tour, Founder and President of People Mover Transit Authority. “We’re happy to offer an option to Cornwall residents to celebrate and be safe. No need to worry about who is driving, leave the driving to Cornwall Transit drivers!”
People Mover has chartered three Cornwall Transit buses for the special service. Each bus will display the message Happy New Year/Bonne Année/People Mover. The bus service will pickup people at the participating 7 restaurants/bars every 40 minutes between midnight and 3 am and will be dropping riders off at existing bus stops near residents’ homes. There is no cost to this service.

Econo Lodge
Schnitzels
Ramada Inn
This special New Year’s Eve charter service is not part of the normal Cornwall Transit service, which operates on a modified schedule during the holidays. On New Year’s Eve the last regularly scheduled bus leaves downtown at 6:15 pm. The Charter Service operating later that night will only be picking people up at the above seven locations, and dropping people off at bus stops along existing bus routes. After picking up people the buses will meet briefly at the corner of Pitt and Second where people can transfer to buses going east, west and north. Downtown partygoers looking to take advantage of this service are welcome to board the bus at this location as well.
About Cornwall People Mover Service
This initiative was started by Mr. Brian Hollingsworth and Daniel La Tour. Mr. Hollingsworth wanted to be sure that the people attending his Econo Lodge New Year’s eve party would be worry free and safe after the festivities. He got in touch with Mr. La Tour, a Montreal native, who has helped organize this type of service in other areas and established People Mover. They presented the idea to the other participating establishments and partnered up with Cornwall Transit to provide the service.
