Cornwall ON – Elaine MacDonald was one of the busiest women in Cornwall Ontario this weekend as it was the 100th International Women’ s Day celebration world wide.

From last Saturday event at the Best Western PLUS Parkway Inn & Conference Centre, to The Vagina Monologues to yesterday’s chat at the TL Leger Centre having a chat with a small group of immigrant women about issues that they face, the City Councilor and President of the Labor Council was very busy; especially when you realize that Ms. MacDonald is a retired school teacher.

It was a busy weekend and every event we covered was filled to capacity showing the importance that women feel and how they support the issues and causes.

Nathalie Mehra was the Key Note speaker Saturday and we captured most of her speech.

At the end of the event I was able to interview four local politicians; Cindy Wood, Councilor for South Stormont Ontario, Bernadette Clement, Cornwall City Councilor, Lori Taylor, former NDP Candidate and Ms MacDonald.   I’d shot so much footage the tail of the interview was cut off as the hard disk on the camera was full!

Some interesting things said during the course of the many words shared over the weekend; especially in light of the actions in the State of Wisconsin that could possibly have ramifications here in Canada where Unions have been under attack for years now.

Women in Unions fare better against men when it comes to pay equity and public services are actually a form of taking wealth from those that pay taxes and sharing it with those that provide public service.    I’d never thought of it that way before and it’s a very interesting and valid concept when you think about it.

What do you think Canada?  You can post your comments below.
