Huge Hydro One Transformer Fire Hits Toronto – Fire Out – No Injuries Reported – March 18, 2011

Toronto ON – Our team are diverse and talented!  Kevin Lamoureux sent in this photo from Toronto this afternoon where a Hydro One  transformer caught fire and spewed some scary stuff into Toronto skies.

One of the biggest Hydro stations in Toronto, Richview Transformer, at Dixon Road and the 401 caught on fire causing road closures and evacuations as over 80 fire fighters were called in to fight the blaze.

From Hydro One:

Hydro One confirms that Toronto Fire Services have extinguished the fire at the Richview Transformer Station, but there continues to be reports of smoke emanating from the site.

There were no injuries or health and safety issues reported as a result the incident. The fire commenced at4:49 p.m. At 5:42, power was successfully restored to all affected customers after two transformers caught fire.

Hydro One crews will continue to assess the damage at the station.  The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Hydro One would like to thank and acknowledge the efforts of Toronto Fire Services for their immediate and safe response to the fire.

The affected transformers at Richview Station (TS), step-down electricity from the provincial grid to lower voltages which is then distributed along Toronto Hydro’s power lines to its customers. Toronto Hydro successfully transferred all load supplied by these transformers to other stations.

Hydro One delivers electricity safely, reliably and responsibly to homes and businesses across the province of Ontario and owns and operates Ontario’s 29,000 km high-voltage transmission network that delivers electricity to large industrial customers and municipal utilities, and a 123,000 km low-voltage distribution system that serves about 1.3 million end-use customers and smaller municipal utilities in the province. Hydro One is wholly owned by the Province of Ontario.
