Gander the Bear Cub Euthanized for being too Friendly – June 22, 2011

RCMP Handout

Gander Newfoundland – I just don’t understand how some people think.   Little Gander the bear pictured above was euthanized because he was too…..friendly.

Apparently he kept coming back into contact with people and after a failed attempt to relocate him deeper into the forest he kept coming back.   I’m not sure I want to visit Newfoundland much after reading about the little guy’s plight… I know I’m not an expert, but surely there could’ve been some other option?   A Zoo even?    This little guy didn’t do anything wrong.  He wasn’t destructive or violent.    What a world we live in….

  1. There is an undescribable amount of rage inside of me right now. The pit of my stomach is turning in anger. Are you kidding me?! You kill a bear to resolve the fault of humans. I’m sorry, but in my mind that does not make sense. They say that they had warned humans not to feed the bear as the bear would asociate cars with food, therefor resulting in injury or death for the bear, then they completely contradict themselves by doing the job anyway.
It sickens me to think that out of all the options, such as natural reserve or a zoo, they choose to take it’s life.
We as humans are at fault. Aside from giving a wild animal food at such a young age before it can learn to fend for itself and catch food itself, we go ahead and place a great long slab of cement and tar right through THEIR LAND. Nature was here long before us. But no. Let’s just kill the bear, because it’s not humans fault that it didn’t know better.

  2. I know a few humans that could have been euthanized instead of the bear, No more “I’ze the Bize” for me

  3. Why nobody is being thrown into JAIL right now for this?! SOMEBODY MUST PAY FOR THIS, IN A WAY THAT WOULD MAKE THIS IMPOSSIBLE TO HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE!

    JUSTICE FOR GANDER!

  4. 2011 friendly bear named Gander put to sleep. today that practice continues, Are you learning nothing? Who named that bear, Leave the animals and their habitat alone. Geez.
