Sue McConville’s Weekly Business Management Tip #4

CFN – A Final Word on Time Management

Whether at work or at home, you need to put yourself or your organization first within the context of values and goals.  If you know what you value and what you want to achieve then it is much easier to prioritize your time.

For example, ABC has a plan to grow 15% in the coming fiscal year.  They have identified what their clients both value and need. They have set forth a plan to deliver to their clients and create growth for the organization. The goals and objectives have been communicated to the staff.   This makes it much easier to prioritize your time!  With every task you perform you can ask yourself:  Is what I am about to do going to help my company achieve their goals?  If the answer is no, then why are you doing it?

The same can be said for your personal time. You have set forth your goals and know what you value. Let’s go back to week one with your desire to exercise 20 minutes per day.  Many of us are great at procrastinating!  A good question to a ask yourself before you turn on the TV, or answer that text message, or find any other means to delay doing something is:  Is what I am about to do going to help me achieve my goals?

Always put yourself first – what do you need to do for yourself to move forward within the context of your values and your goals. If you know what you value, it’s much easier to say no. If you know what you want to achieve, crafting an appropriate time allocation for yourself is a cinch! If you’re as protective of yourself as you would be of any prized possession or important person in your life, choices are much easier to make. Valuing yourself leads to valuing your time and that leads to using your time wisely.
