CFN – Once again, I have found a holiday that I have taken for granted: Halloween. Although it may not technically be known as a “holiday” per se, it has always been a great day of fun and laughter that I have missed out on this year.
In Denmark, Halloween is more of a “young” child’s thing. And even then, it is not very common to have trick or treaters come knocking on your door. And more often than not, the person will give money than candy. My host sister who is 12, went out trick or treating for about an hour and come back with 60 krones and barely 2 handfuls of candy. This has made me realize how lucky we are in Canada to be able to go out and have fun with our friends and come home with— at the very least— a pillowcase of candy.

But not all hope was lost for my fun, I found out, as on the following weekend, all the Rotary exchange students in Denmark got together in a town called Holbæk. All 200 (give or take a few) gathered for an amazing halloween weekend, filled with fun, laughter, and of course: blood.

There were some students who spent hours getting ready for our Halloween dance, and in the end, it really paid off. We had a Canadian girl dressed as a Smurf, a Brazilian boy dressed as a skeleton, an Australian girl dressed up as Michael Jackson, an Indian boy as a zombie and so much more. Although there was no trick-or-treating involved, the dance we had planned for the night was so much fun, and we even had an hour and a half for some students to entertain, where a lot of talented people got up and song or danced.

As well as that, thanks to our two wonderful MC’s for the night, as in-between fillers, certain countries had to sing their national anthem within 30 seconds. Despite the fact that there is only about 12 Canadians in total, we were able to successfully complete the task! All in all, despite not being in North America, I was able to keep the spirit of Halloween alive in Denmark, and from what I’ve been told, there is a day similar to Halloween in February, so I look forward to that!
