After my last flight the pilots let me have a look at the flight deck. There were a lot of buttons switches and dials. Do the pilots use them all and do they have to know what they all do?

The pilots must know the function and the use of every button, switch, control and dial in their Flight Deck.  Before a pilot can qualify to fly a type of airplane he or she must satisfactorily complete training for that airplane type. This includes many hours of learning about all those switches, buttons, controls and dials, how they work and how they are used in normal and in abnormal or emergency situations.

Before every flight, pilots get into their seats in the flight deck 45 minutes to an hour prior to scheduled departure time.  In a specific flow the pilots will check the function of all those switches, buttons, controls and dials, and ensure they are in the correct position for flight.  If anything is not functioning correctly, it has to be rectified prior to flight.

I want to take my dog to Florida with me in January. What accomodations would she get on the airplane.

On most airlines pets can be carried in the passenger cabin or in the lower cargo hold of the airplane.

If the dog is small and fits in a small carrier bag that will fit under the seat in front of you, you may be able to take the dog with you in the passenger cabin. Larger breeds of dogs have to be in a cage that will be loaded in the cargo hold of the airplane, designated for  live animals.  This cargo hold is usually at then back of the airplane, supplied with the same conditioned air as the passenger cabin.  There are no inflight movies, but the air temperature is maintained at 18C to keep your pet comfortable.

Of course, don’t forget, that you must also have vaccination documents for your pet, to present to United States officials.  Before your travel, you should also check with the border officials if your pet will be admissible in the other country..
