TRAFFIC ACTION PLAN

 

Cornwall, ON- The Cornwall Community Police Service’s Traffic Action Plan for the month of March will consist of targeted enforcement on Sign Violations. This includes but is not limited to Stop Signs, Yield signs and U-Turn signs.

Every driver operating a motor vehicle who is approaching a stop sign at an intersection, shall stop his or her vehicle at a marked stop line or, if none, then immediately before entering the nearest crosswalk or, if none, then immediately before entering the intersection; and shall yield the right of way to traffic in the intersection or approaching the intersection on another highway so closely that to proceed would constitute an immediate hazard and, having so yielded the right of way, may proceed.

The driver or operator of a vehicle approaching a yield right-of-way sign shall slow down to a speed reasonable for the existing conditions or shall stop and shall yield the right of way to traffic in the intersection or approaching on the intersecting highway so closely that it constitutes an immediate hazard and having so yielded may proceed with caution.

No driver or operator of a vehicle upon a highway shall turn the vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite direction when, upon a curve where traffic approaching the vehicle from either direction cannot be seen by the driver of the vehicle within a distance of 150 metres, on a railway crossing or within 30 metres of a railway crossing,  upon an approach to or near the crest of a grade where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching from either direction within 150 metres or within 150 metres of a bridge, viaduct or tunnel where the driver’s view is obstructed within such distance.

If you are found in contravention of these violations, it will cost you $110.00 and 2 to 3 demerit points.

BREACHES

Cornwall, ON- A 15 year-old Cornwall youth was arrested on the 24th of February, 2012. The youth was bound by a undertaking with relevant conditions to keep the peace and be of good behaviour, abstain from communicating directly or indirectly with a certain person or from going to his residence and to attend school without truancy. The youth was also bound by a probation order with the condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. It is alleged that on the 24th of February, 2012 the youth failed to attend school. Police were contacted and an investigation followed. The youth was charged with 3 counts of undertaking and 1 counts of breach of probation order. The youth was held in custody until court on the 27th of February, 2012. The youth’s name was not released as per provision under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Cornwall, ON- Kevin Simser, 27 of Cornwall was arrested on the 24th of February, 2012. He was bound by two undertakings with the relevant condition to notify the Cornwall Community Police Service in writing within 24 hours of any change of address, employment or occupation.  It is alleged that on the 24th of February, 2012 he was found to be residing at a different residence. He was charged with breach of undertaking and held in custody until court the following day.

Cornwall, ON- Andrew Courville, 24 of Cornwall was arrested on the 25th of February, 2012. He was bound by an undertaking with the relevant condition to not consume alcohol. It is alleged that on the 25th of February, 2012 he was found to be under the influence of alcohol by a member of the Cornwall Community Police Service Patrol Division. He was charged with breach of undertaking and released to appear in court on the 10th of April. 2012.

WARRANT

 

            Cornwall, ON- Patrick Westcott, 45 of Cornwall was arrested on the 24th of February, 2012 under the strength of an outstanding warrant.  It is alleged that during August 2011 he uttered forged documents and a warrant was issued. He was charged accordingly and released to appear in court on the 10th of April, 2012.

 

ASSAULT

 

            Cornwall, ON- A 16 year-old Cornwall youth was arrested on the 25th of February, 2012. It is alleged that on the 25th of February, 2012 the youth got into an altercation with a 17 year-old female and assaulted her. The victim required medical treatment. Police were contacted and an investigation followed. The youth was charged with assault and released to appear in court on the 5th of April, 2012. The youth’s name was not released as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

 

IMPAIRED OPERATION & OVER .80

 

            Cornwall, ON- Steven Tyo, 30 of Cornwall was arrested in the early hours of the 26th of February, 2012. It is alleged that he operated a motor vehicle on Sydney Street while under the influence of alcohol. The male was charged with impaired operation and transported for further testing which resulted in a charge of over .80. He was released to appear in court on the 13th of March, 2012.

 

Cornwall, ON- Kennedy Benedict, 24 of Akwesasne was arrested in the early hours of the 27th of February, 2012. It is alleged that he operated a motor vehicle on Montreal Road while under the influence of alcohol. The male was charged with impaired operation and transported for further testing which resulted in a charge of over .80. He was released to appear in court on the 3rd of March, 2012.

 

DOMESTIC ASSAULT

 

            Cornwall, ON- A 19 year-old female and a 23 year-old male both from Cornwall were arrested on the 26th of February, 2012. It is alleged that on the 26th of February, 2012 they got into an altercation and assaulted each other. The female caused damage. The male was bound by a recognizance to keep the peace They both received physical injuries. Police were contacted and an investigation followed.  The female was charged with domestic assault and mischief under $5000.00. The male was charged with domestic assault and breach of recognizance. They were both held in custody until court the following day. Their names were not released as it was domestic in nature.

 

THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLE

            Cornwall, ON- The Cornwall Community Police Service is investigating the theft of a 1999 GMC Sierra, green in colour, from a Emma Street residence. If you have any information regarding this break and enter, please contact the Service at 613-932-2110 or Crime Stoppers at 613-937-8477.

GARAGE FIRE


(South Dundas) –  On 24Feb12, at approximately 3:00am, SD&G OPP officers responded to a report of a residential fire on County Road 16, South Dundas Township.

South Dundas Fire/Rescue attended the scene and extinguished the blaze that was contained to the detached two car garage. There were no reported injuries.

SD&G OPP officers assisted by the OPP Crime Unit as well as the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office continue the investigation.

SD&G OPP BUSY WITH WEEKEND STORM


(SD&G) –  Last Fridays’ storm kept SD&G OPP officers busy responding to calls for service with the storm causing low visibility and poor road conditions. From Friday afternoon until early Sunday morning police responded toa total of 69 traffic related calls (Stormont-28, Dundas-21, and Glengarry-20) from vehicles in the ditch to property damage collisions.

Thankfully, no serious injuries resulted.

CHARGES LAID


(North Dundas) –  On 25Feb12, at approximately 11:30pm, SD&G OPP officers responded to a report of a male causing a disturbance at the Winchester arena on Main St. Winchester, On.

The investigation revealed that a 24yr old male (Nathan ST LOUIS of Long Sault, On) broke a window after he was instructed to leave a dance that was being held in the arena.

He was arrested and faces charges of:

  • Mischief Under $5,000
  • Utter Threat to Cause Death or Bodily Harm

 

He is scheduled to appear 03April12 in Morrisburg court.

 

TRAFFIC STOP NETS DRUGS


(North Glengarry) – On 26Feb12, at approximately 12:15am, SD&G OPP officers had occasion to conduct a traffic a stop on North Service Road, North Glengarry Township.

The stop resulted in the seizure (small amount) of suspected marihuana.

The 18yr old male driver (Patrick MARTEL of Champlain Township) was arrested and faces a charge of:

  • Possession Schedule II Cannabis Marihuana

 

He is scheduled to appear 04April12 in Alexandria court.

 

BREAK AND ENTER


(South Dundas) – On 24Feb12, at approximately 8:30am, SD&G OPP officers responded to a report of a break & enter on Shannette Road, South Dundas Township.

The investigation revealed that sometime overnight unknown suspects attended a garage and removed batteries, tires and a 22calibre rifle.

The investigation is ongoing.
