Letter to the Editor – Jane Smith of Ottawa on cuts to Community Access Internet & Minister Paradis – April 15, 2012

Industry Minister Christian Paradis has cut the Community Access Program that provided public Internet access sites across Canada.
He now has ordered his department to refer Canadians to Service Canada sites. (See link below)
Minister Paradis is embroiled in a Conflict of Interest case involving moving a Service Canada site for political patronage reasons. (Please see link below) Minister Paradis should have reclused himself from any involvement in deciding the fate of the Community Access Program given the present circumstances. Did he declare a conflict of interest. Of course not.
There is a save CAP website: http://www.savecap.ca/
Please help combat Minister Paradis’ by demanding an inquiry into his unethical behaviour and also assist CAP to survive!
Thank you.

  1. Free internet access is available in most if not all public libraries. No need for duplication of services.

  2. Thank you, Jane Smith. An important letter illustrating another decision by our government of “efficiencies” that is completely out of tune with the reality of Canada.

It should be self-evident that good communications are essential for an informed people, and for a sense of community—so precious in a country as vast as ours. Apparently, our regressive government wants to push us apart—for us to know only what the PMO decides what’s good for us to know.

Where are progressive Conservatives when we need them? Why do they remain silent?

  3. I think that “Progressive Conservative” can now be officially proclaimed to be an oxymoron.

  4. It is rather unusual for a federal program to be completed after only 17 years, I wonder how many others could be stopped.
With so many smart phones, internet cafes, libraries, wi-fi hot spots and various government sites, is this service really needed anymore?

Surely the Ethics Commisioner is already looking into placement of these services and it might be a different one that saw Shawinigan Tax Services changes. We still pay for that! Trucking tax forms between Ottawa and Shawinigan, then storing them again must be creating some jobs….Thanks Mr. Chretien.
