  1. @ former Kebecer … WELL SAID… Bravo. I go further and say the ROC should hold a vote as to whether Quebec should be tossed out. OUR TURN to decide.

@ Barry Renouf … The French schools are the first step. Then comes the French teachers for the schools who then need French services and French this and French that and before you know it your tourist tours will be demanding both French and English (which btw, i was pleased when i visited last year were ONLY in English) and then your doomed like many other provinces in this English dominated country. READ J.V. Andrews books. Bilingual Today – French tomorrow and others.

β€œThere are, of course, far more unilingual Anglophone clinics throughout the province, catering only to English-speaking clients, but Mr. Cameron conveniently forgets to mention this”

First of all Mr. Collins, to my understanding there are ZERO β€œEnglish only” hospitals or clinics anywhere in Canada. No hospital or clinic in Canada will turn away people that speak French, Chinese, Spanish or any other language for that matter.

Unlike the β€œFrench only clinics” that actually do turn away people who do not speak French.

Of course, this argument is a mute argument anyways because this country is an English first and English dominant country to begin with.

That being said, it is also a country that is open to all people. Those who speak Spanish, German, Italian or whatever. It doesn’t matter.
However, as the expectation with most every country in the world, (including the imagined β€œcountry of Quebec” according to some) anyone living in a particular country SHOULD be expected to know the main language of said country in order to get along in the dominant language of said country.

    http://youtu.be/40F23trVKEo

Contrary to the belief of some French people in this country the French language is a small minority in Canada and despite how they have banished the English language in the province (yes, β€œProvince”) of Quebec the idea that the French language should have equal status in ALL of Canada is just simply absurd.

    Barrie Collins wrote:
β€œBy far the most practical, and economical, way to do this is to have the staff that directly interfaces between patients and health care services (i.e. the nurses) be bilingual.”

Your completely asinine claim that β€œthis is the way to do this” is ANYTHING BUT β€œpractical and economical” Barrie…

Especially to unilingual the English speaking majority of this country.

Yes, I said β€œEnglish speaking MAJORITY of this country.”

And, you know, it never ceases to amaze me how people like yourself, who claim such things, are completely oblivious to the concept of how β€œthe province” of Quebec has utterly dismissed the English people and the English language in that province.

I mean, it’s one thing to try to get bilingual service in Quebec at a hospital or clinic, but, one can barely even get served in a McDonald’s in English in that β€œprovince” now a days.

Which it MUST be pointed out yet again…
This is in a province” where by English is the β€œmajority” language of the country from which the people who visit that β€œprovince” of Quebec are from.

    Barrie Collins wrote:
β€œMr. Cameron, however, believes that nurses have the right to work in their own language. This sounds good, on the face of it, but the inherent problem is that increased nursing staff would be required, on every shift, to ensure that all patients would be able to receive attention in their own language.”

This idea of the French minority in this country β€œbeing able to work in their own language” as well as the idea of catering to such a small minority of the population in this country is a farce and something that has been pushed upon the majority English tax paying citizens of this country for far too long.

The concept is simply and utterly beyond absurd. There has NEVER BEEN a situation ANYWHERE on this planet where the minority has so much power over the majority.

And again, we MUST add to this how the β€œprovince of Quebec” is doing the complete opposite and removing EVERY and ANY semblance of any respect or service for the English Canadian citizens who live in that province (yes, Canadian citizens who are, after all, still within their own country) it is even more totally and completely absurd.

But, do not despair … We, the majority English speaking people of this country are waking up and realizing this…

Thus, in essence, if the ROC were to treat the French in the ROC like the French treat the English in β€œthe province” (yes, let us keep remembering that it is JUST a province) of Quebec then there would be ZERO issue with regard to increased nursing staff and so on as it would be expected that the French in the ROC would simply just have to have knowledge of the β€œmajority language” of the country they happen to live in.

    http://youtu.be/40F23trVKEo

In my thinking, since β€œthe province” of Quebec is so damned Anti English with its anti English laws and so on, why don’t the French who are so worried about getting served in their own language in the ROC just simply move there?

Problem solved … And with much less aggravation to the majority English speaking citizens of this county as well as with much less expense over ALL…

Money that could go towards health care… As one example…

And, don’t kid yourself, this aggravation is building and I feel that it won’t be too much longer before the friendly easy going tide of apathy and appeasement from the English majority of this country begins to be an outgoing tide of resentment.

    Barrie Collins wrote:
β€œThe resulting increased cost would make purchase of state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, medication, etc.”

Finally a great point Barrie – This is indeed what is happening to the country of Canada right now. The resulting outlandish cost of providing bilingual service to such a small minority of French speaking people outside the province of Quebec is costing us

    — the majority English tax paying citizens of this great country —

so much extra that we cannot afford the top quality health care that we know,
we should and could be able to provide if we didn’t have this bilingualism burden to begin with.

Therefore, I truly believe it is important for..

One of two things MUST happen in this country — VERY SOON —

    Either

    A) The French accept that we have allowed them to do as they wish within β€œthe province” of Quebec (at the expense of the majority English of this country BTW) and you all should simply be happy with that and leave us alone in the ROC.

If you decide NOT to separate then, we re-write the rules to suite the way things REALLY should be …
That is, to suite the majority as is and should be the norm.

That entails the idea that β€œprovince of Quebec” will no longer treat Canadian citizens living in that β€œprovince” as second class citizens who are again, living within their own country.

    AND

Quebec will accept Canada, the Canadian flag, and the English Canadian national anthem as their own as well as accepting that the English language is the dominant language of this country and also accept the idea that they should have a working knowledge of this language when traveling outside the province of Quebec.
And also be able to provide service to Canadian citizens within β€œthe province of Quebec” in ENGLISH… — the dominant language of this country —

    AND

There will be no more use of the β€œnot withstanding clause” to subvert Canadian laws in the extreme manner they used it for, for several years now.

Oh and, they MUST also sign onto the Canadian Constitution..

I mean seriously, how ridiculous is it that this country has allowed a province within this country to opt out of signing the countries constitution… ?

    Or,

    2) If you decide to separate and take the next step.

If you decide to separate then the French can finally have what they want in the province of β€œQuebec” and we, the ROC can be rid of the small minority
and, with the exception of the Federal government (I am being nice here) the major pain in the butt requirements to supply services and so on to such a diminutively minor group outside β€œthe province of Quebec” (yes, it’s just a province) at such an amazingly high cost to the majority English speaking tax payers of this country who are totally and completely fed up with paying for YOUR concept of what YOU and your ilk think you deserve while again, treating our brethren English speaking people in β€œthe province of Quebec” (yes, it’s just a province) as if they are second class citizens in their own country, is finished, done.. Over with…

I know, I said it again but, IT JUST HAS TO BE hammered in to you people because you seem to dismiss it or try to forget that β€œthe province of Quebec” is just that… Only β€œa province” and you also seem to forget that the people living in that province are Canadian citizens who deserve the protection of the Canadian constitution which our politicians have allowed you to completely step all over with your stupid laws which have been enacted using the ridicules so called β€œnot withstanding clause.”

Also, some very harsh language has been used against me like the word moron, asshole, idiot and then some…Wouldn’t it be proper to ban those posters.

  12. We the people……..

I have read with fascination the many well thought out approaches to the ‘french curves’ overtaking Canadian jobs the English should HAVE BEEN HIRED FOR in the ROC.

We do however place more emphasis on our western partners yet we should be all inclusive with our 4 eastern provinces in this muck and mire dog pit Kabec has dumped the English in.

Another way to get your, now our message across is to look at the possibility of an English backlash for delinquent parties as to boycotting their business or even blacklist them for not hiring by the numbers. Hard enough to do that in communities like Cornwall yet we too can be as belligerent as necessary, as the french have become in order to show our exasperation with the hiring practices.

Also restrict all trade and tourism with kabec that does not require English ONLY contract content for signature.

Provide at least a 5 year tax break for your community for ANY AND ALL Kebec companies wishing to relocate to anywhere in ROC to get out of the restrictive policies in Kabec to provide English only jobs for the majority English. Be overt in sending them invitations to relocate.

My take has been that if we keep pussy footing around this frencification of the ROC, it will not stop until no one can avoid negative fall out

  13. We the people…..

Look, despite my own retoric, I am as much in favor of hiring by the numbers but this has turned out to be wishful thinking and a targeted philosopy by the french minority ‘people’ and certainly a definitive planned take overby the french ‘majority’ bureaucrates and administrators, who do the hiring.

Snowed in is whar we have become and if we don’t or can’t get ourselves back on track, we will be voting for a ‘Pauline Marios’ style Prime Minister.

Mark my words, with our history of alternating English term then french term P.M.’s that draconian vote for a Pauline Marios stlye P.M.” could happen.

Example, if you can not stand up to their military might, do what so many successful dictators have done worl wide and yes, terrorists, is you sneak in in so many subliminal ways then, in our case we would have NO CHOICE but to bow as subserviant to this language take over of our entire country…..AT OUR OWN MAJORITY EXPENSE.

This is NOT rubish folks. It is as real as real can be. Then it will be ..THEY THE ‘FRENCH’ PEOPLE MAJORITY. WE WOULD HAVE NO ARGUEMENT BY THEN WILL WE.

  14. We the people ……VOTE
French-A is the only accepted standard for hiring in a bilingual environment whilst substandard English is granted a pass.

Now WHY IS THAT. Well I’m going to tell you why, because I just had an epiphany. The reason why is deliberate in terms of long term thinking. Where do you think these people will end up in 20, 30 years from now, or even earlier? Guess a logical pool to draw on from any internal rise to power would be those over educated French β€˜people who were purposely placed as these guys are the ones administrative, CEO stripes to perpetuate the French leadership in every segment of Canadian society.

Do you and now all the others see the wool now, that is the wool being pulled over our eyes?
This is not only smart, but damned frightening.
Imagine the insidiousness of this snake like creeping in the grass that is going on in all aspects of government, business, life itself here in all society of our fair Canada.

Imagine the day when these SMART, FULL OF WISDOM NEOPHITE DICTATORS IN THIS NOW OLIGARCHY SOCIETY will rue the day that they finally come to their senses, once all is said and done and the ENGLISH and all others (Allophones) will be told that the bilingualism of Canada is NO LONGER AFFORDABLE.
Do you know what comes next dear Rosie? You guessed it, the decision will be made that English schools, English duplication of translations from french, English signing and any Allophones will be required to be unilingual FRENCH….YIKS…………for heavens sake and yurika I got it. THATS THE PLAN AAAAANNNNNDDDDDDD ITS WORKING, falling right into their hands, right up their sneaky sleeves.

There can be no other ulterior motive. First we undercut at every stage, then, when nobody is looking, when nobody is able to defend, they’ll let the hammer down. KAPOW, right in the groin.
The Muslims want to rake over the world by overpopulating it and by burning, killing and pilaging all non Muslims…….at least that’s what the terrorist entities have in mind…….subliminal and smart…….while the non Muslims want to fight for abortions, both family members striving for incomes……WHILE THE FRENCH ARE STEELING OUR OWN MONEY TO SUBLIMINALLY DOWNSIZING THEIR OPPOSITION BOTH IN NUMBERS AS WELL AS INCOMES.
How dumb have we been. Time to see the light now isn’t it. Everything else, this bitching and feuding is small potatoes to the world plan now isn’t it.

    Comme ca vais now then………………….

  15. Come on people. Where did you go?

The signitors to the Charter unwittingly allowed for Pandora’s box to be opened, the start of all our problems.

Better apartied than this. Now we have been caught up with our pants down, swamped with no jobs for the uni’s.

The whole premise of French satisfaction happens to be based on the duality of bilingualizm being equal with English and French.

The Charter/Bill of Rights and Freedoms stated nothing about β€˜where numbers warrant’ and that is how and why French has been so forced down our throats where there is no French voice, AND QUEBEC DIDN’T EVEN SIGN ON……THE REST OF CANADA WERE THE LEMMINGS IN THIS ONE.

Can we reverse it? I doubt it, except in the voting booth perhaps.

This is how/why Quebec, but in particular, the non Quebec franco force is taking the issue to the n’th degree with absolutely NO consideration of the financial costs to the rest of us. One of the major financial costs is and will continue to be to Quebec itself………but economically, provincie wide, as the rest of us draw down on tourism, business and government welfare.

    We the people………..VOTE

  18. Ontario, with enough votes can and should dump OFLSA and recind the call for bilingualism throughout Ontario by use of the “Not withstanding clause”.
Have they ever used the “Not Withstanding Clause” for anything? Further, has any province applied it aside from Quebec, for any purpose?

  19. Thank goodness Burnaby B.C. has taken a stand for needs by the numbers and as affordable (Nat’l Post article Nov 09, 2012.. I think they want to be the first to declare no to bilingualism and all it entails and go the wy of Qebec but oppisie by declaring English only via the ‘Not withstanding clause,. They see the jobs market going askew in Ontario and the Eastern provinces and realize the $ savings to be had. Enough being sent on Chinese and Tagalog and others….where numbers warrent ratherthan being inclusive with the less than 1% francophone community. Cheaper for them to learn to seak English, and at their own expense rather than forcing french on the entire province. Common sense prevails at least somewhere in this country.

Language Fairness for ALL- Fighting for the Rights of ALL Canadians

  21. June 30 (Sunday) PRE-CANADA DAY . . . or Moving Day in Quebec.
McGill College (Outside the Office Marois).

    HIGH NOON

RALLY ORGANIZER – GALGANOV DOT COM INC.

The following people have been invited to speak (in no particular order) and all have confirmed their participation:

1 – Jim Duff – Former Montreal Radio talk Show Host and Editor In Chief of The Hudson Gazette.

2 – Jimmy K – Former President of the Equality party and Rights Activist.

3 – Brent Tyler – Constitutional Lawyer and past President of Alliance Quebec.

4 – Keith Henderson – Past President and Leader of the Equality Party.

6 – Peter Goldring – Conservative MP Edmonton East

    5 – Howard Galganov
The purpose of this Rally is THREE-FOLD:

1 – To give a spark to a very tired and discouraged English population in Montreal.

2 – To send a message to the French Community IN ENGLISH, that the Anglos are not patsies, and they should think twice about how they look across Canada and around the rest of North America, as they allow or encourage their government and THREE major Quebec political parties to crap on English speakers with impunity.

3 – Finally, the English speaking community must understand that THEY are all Canadians, NOT QUEBECOIS, and no matter what ethnocentric Quebecois nationalists would like English Quebecers to believe, their future is in Canada, NOT in Quebec. And no matter what Quebec does, they will always be Canadians, even in an ethnocentric Quebecois nation.

The other thing . . . This speech is for the ENGLISH community. It is not for French Quebecois. They don’t need a spark to lift them up. They already have three political parties, language laws that discriminate against all others, and a government in Ottawa coupled to a Supreme Court that closes their eyes to Quebec’s linguistic racism and affront to Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Therefore . . . I couldn’t give a rat’s ass what the French media will have to write or say about this rally. The future of English Montreal is not going to be decided by the French. It will be decided by the English. And, since this is all about the RIGHTS and future of Quebec’s English population, I have ZERO intention of speaking in French, since they couldn’t give a rat’s ass about us either.

Like I said at my speech at the Equality Party 2.0 meeting. If the French media want to interview me, let them learn how to speak English. I stopped being in an accommodating mood long ago. We as an English population have kissed-so-much FRENCH ass, that our lips are numb.

Don’t you think it’s HIGH-TIME that we make a RALLY about us, and ONLY about us?

    WILL YOU BE THERE?

ALSO – THERE IS A COST TO RENTING A SOUND SYSTEM ETC. SO, IF ANYONE WANTS TO HELP IN THE COSTS, PLEASE GO TO:

  22. The video above is an advertisement for Canada Rally June 30, 2013 in Montreal!!

  23. Hoping all interested people will make a stand and be at this Rally.
Bill 101 and now Bill 14 in Quebec is not only discriminatory but oppressive to CANADIANS.

To think that in our country a state language police can go into business establishment of any sort and if it does not CONFORM to the restrictive language laws :
The state has a right to confiscate items without a warrant .

So therefore an establishment can have cocaine in the establishment ,they can’t confiscate that without a search warrant but because it may have English on an otherwise legal item it can be confiscated without a warrant .
Does anyone out there see how illogical that is ?
It comes down to oppressing another language or culture in a so called protection of another.

    Benjamin Franklin stated:

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety ,deserve neither liberty or safety.

This best describes Quebec and its language POLITICS:

Temporary safety of ones language at the cost of liberty and oppression of minorities.

  24. I wanted to share this letter recently sent to our PM by a Language Fairness for ALL supporter;

    Rt. Hon Stephen Harper

    Prime Minister of Canada

Sir, the language laws and Charter of Rights and Freedoms put in place since the P.E. Trudeau era and other laws provincially and municipally, are having a negative effect on everyday life to the majority. Although isolated cases are being seen more often, not being able to speak English in a Quebec store break room, forcing bylaws on Ontario (or Dieppe NB) businesses to put up dual language signage when most did anyway, migration patterns due to language, separate schools and French only (not bilingual) health care facilities, and more and more demands for bilingual staffing while bilingual numbers outside of Quebec are stagnant, is expensive and divisive.

I believe the majority of Canadians have been very respective of the rights of others, to the point of not getting jobs because of a failure or inability to learn another language. Outside of Quebec, we see provinces and territories with under 5% Francophone and the majority of those can also speak English very well. One such individual has gone to the Supreme Court (with help from the Commissioner of Official Languages) because an Air Canada Air Attendant did not serve a 7up to him speaking French. A bilingual male in Alberta fights through the courts because his speeding ticket was not bilingual, how respective is that?

Far too often, we only see ways to make our lives more French and also far too often, we see no actual needs assessment presented in, and produced in, an unbiased way. Could these billions of dollars and thousands of employees at each level of government, not be better used in helping all seniors, all children, all Canadians? Many voters do! Most voters I assume understand a level of services in a minority language is a good thing, however, when do we reach the proper level without a measuring stick? How can we use technology to allow that approximate level of service requested? Each side of the equation has a different formula of evaluating and that energy should be harnessed and evaluated.

Mr. Harper, I understand an election nears, β€œand an election is no time to talk about issues” so what do English speaking Canadians (still the majority) need to do for the government to have this debate? A debate on fairness that includes numbers and specifics to provide a level of service, yes, but one that does not involve changing goal line locations every time a new goal is reached, which happens regularly with our courts. (Yukon Court ordered a 15 million dollar school built for 41 French high school students in 2011). It is time to stop justifying and explaining away our rights.

    Thank you

Choose language fairness, not sides πŸ™‚

    Deb Cameron

  26. @ Debbie Cameron. Your letter to Dear Leader Harper is all over the map. Why not stick to the unfair hiring practices rather than trotting out the old story about the stupid grocery store manager who was fired for insisting that French be spoken on breaks? Whining about French education being provided in the Yukon won’t help your cause either. You and most of your freedom-fighter friends are your own worst enemies. You all come across as nut-bar English language supremacists rather than rational people who want the unfair hiring policies rectified. Stick to legitimate issues if you want to be taken seriously. Anybody (with a brain) checking out the LFA web site will consider your cause a joke.

  27. Furtz, each of those letter issues directly relate to the official languages act and charter of rights, also, each of those events happened. I would have thought you could see the bigger picture that is affecting all of Canada, either directly through jobs, or at the very least, paying for it out of tax dollars.

  28. @ Furtz

Thanks for your input, I will file it under G…
FYI; I didn’t write the letter, but you seem to get confused a lot with people’s posts…
    Have a great day!!!

  29. Furtz,

Providing Language services be it an educational entity or any other goverment service it should be provided within a reasonable approach .
Spending millions to service a very small minority like a school for 40 students is not cost effective, but then again it not the minority the covers the majority of cost is it?

Now for less then 4% should schools be built ,clinics that only serve that 4%?

We are creating a segregated service of which was not the original intent of the charter or bill 8.

We have seperate health services ,separate buses ,seperate hospitals and seperate schools .

They are one for French the others for bilingual ,what’s next separate washrooms for French ?
What about separate treatment ,but that happens as well ,welcome to canada’s class system.

  30. The problem with the letter is the “scatter-gun” approach. Same with the LFA web site. Sticking with the unfair hiring issue (a legitimate concern) would stand a better chance of being taken seriously. Throwing in asinine BS about bilingual signage and flags, and endless examples of rude Francophones won’t get you anywhere. It’s pretty simple, really. Take on one battle at a time, starting with unfair hiring practices. Ditch the idiots who whine and blubber when ever they see a French or bilingual sign, or are spoken to in French. Those fools are killing any chance of your cause, hiring based on merit, of gaining traction.

    I’d like to add…
    MOST of the French —

(as a result of being FULLY BILINGUAL simply because it`s more of a necessity for the French “MINORITY” to know English in North America than it is for the English to know the `regional` MINORITY French language)

    — then have the option to the pick and choose. If the bilingual “regular health clinic is less busy it’s off to that one.

They can go to the `French only`health care clinic (which incidentally is banned for the unilingual English) or they can choose to go to the so called “regular clinic” that caters to ALL CANADIANS in a bilingual way …

And guess who pays for both the “French only health clinics”
    AND
the completely bilingual health care clinics?

That’s right, THE MAJORITY tax payers. And guess who that is?

Well, let’s see now… perhaps that would be the majority 96% English
Imagine that. Especially considering that OUTSIDE the province of Quebec the total of French only amounts to approximately — MAYBE — 2 to 4% (if that)

Isn’t that just lovely. What a freakin pan.

  32. Carry on, Kilroy. Your endless ranting is sort of entertaining, but is killing any chance of your group of freedom-fighters being taken seriously. Have to wonder which side you are on.
    Fight on!

  33. Curious furtz, is it better to chase posters from paper to paper, bringing up your favourite topic, in hopes to start an argument in a totally unconnected story? To call out posters at other media outlets, to show off your insanity?

Teach them by showing them furtz. If you run around like a chicken minus la tete, how can anyone learn the proper way to fight for their rights? Should we all run around headless or should we sit down and discuss the matter like adults? To follow your lead, would be to turn into an internet bully who doesn’t know when to stop, and thinks he’s funnier then all get out.

    Just sayin’
    *s*

  34. Furtz, there are some time and resource constraints on these unpaid volunteers to counter the hundreds of government funded francophone associations that often have paid employees, and entire departments in federal, provincial and municipal levels. People need to be advised of all of the “fronts” as countering mechanisms of the many laws and bylaws put in place over 40 plus years to over promote any actual need.

Furtz, contact the fairness groups, there is only 2 in Ontario and 1 in New Brunswick, they could use your help on this approach.

Ah yes, the words of the desperate opposition when they realize that PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO TAKE NOTICE AND ARE getting the chance to see ALL the news articles about the cr@p that is going on in Canada and “the province” of Quebec as well

Yes, it was also you who said something to the effect. “Your endless Youtube videos are useless.”

Fact is Furtzie there are now over 65 thousand people who have viewed my YouTube videos which are mostly “news” clips of REAL NEWS taken from our Canadian evening news agencies in the name of educating the public.

    You know, like this one…

Thanks to you Furtzie (and others like you)
many people / Canadians are now starting to see what is going on.

And ya know what Furtzie. They are NOT LIKING what they are seeing.

And on that note, i would like to wish you a heartfelt

“thank you for constantly prodding me which ultimately facilitates me bringing Canadians yet another glimpse of what is REALLY going on”

    type of day eh πŸ™‚

Good work Furtzie. Keep it up eh πŸ˜‰

  36. A touching true story, a thought to ponder indeed…
    Freedom is NOT Free

In September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a History teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks in her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks. ‘Ms. Cothren, where are our desks?’

She replied, ‘You can’t have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.’

They thought, ‘Well, maybe it’s our grades.’ ‘No,’ she said.

‘Maybe it’s our behavior.’ She told them, ‘No, it’s not even your behavior.’

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom. Kids called their parents to tell them what was happening and by early afternoon television news crews had started gathering at the school to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the desk-less classroom. Martha Cothren said, ‘Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he or she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.’

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in uniform, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall. By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.

Martha said, ‘You didn’t earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. They went halfway around the world, giving up their education and interrupting their careers and families so you could have the freedom you have. Now, it’s up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don’t ever forget it.’

By the way, this is a true story. And this teacher was awarded Veterans of Foreign Wars Teacher of the Year for the State of Arkansas in 2006. She is the daughter of a WWII POW.

Let us always remember the men and women of our military and the rights they have won for us.

  37. Yes absolutely, we are fortunate to live in a country that allows us to be and allows our freedoms.

  38. Some of us live in a country that allows us to be and allows our freedoms. Let’s be realistic about your statement there stella. You have neighbours right down the road that are treated as second class citizens daily? Not all Canadians live in this nirvana you believe in. Perhaps you should reconsider your biased opinion and face the reality that as a citizen of Cornwall, you cannot deny.
