Long Sault Market Week 3 by Reg Coffey – June 16, 2012

CFN – Week 3 of the Long Sault Market was another success. We had even more vendors than before and now we find ourselves in the position where we have to redistribute the vendors to make room for additional booths. Unfortunately I missed last week’s market so I’m playing catch-up with info on the new vendors.

First, the charitable booth of the week was the Friends of the Long Sault Library with a bake and book sale to raise money for the library.

The second new vendor is an old acquaintance from the first couple of years at the Cornwall downtown market, Bill Mesman. Bill had some delicious looking strawberries for sale and they went quickly.

Next in line was another vendor from my previous marketplace, Clarkburn Farms, with some of their fabulous pickles, jams and jellies. Clarkburn Farms was first set up by Chris Cotnam under the Summer Company umbrella but Chris has now moved on in life and is living in Alberta. Mom, Barb Cotnam, is still carrying on with the business and thank God because her canned goods are a great addition to any market.

Next was Sheldanna Farm with a line of fresh locally grown organic product and gluten free baked goods. The booth was quite busy as was my own so I didn’t have the opportunity to talk at length with this vendor but I will revisit this booth next week.

Moving down the line of vendors, I found Flour Child Gluten Free Products. Monique Lefebvre and Mike Giguère offer delicious gluten free baked products. I had a chocolate muffin that was not only gluten free but also egg free and I have to say that I was impressed. I actually passed on my usual afternoon chocolate croissant because the muffin was so satisfying.

The last of the new vendors (well, to me anyway) is Down to Earth Farm with Ann Woite tending the booth. As you can see in the picture Ann was offering some very healthy looking plants for your garden. My wife bought some basil plants and a Stevia plant from Down to Earth Farm on her way home from work last week and they are still very healthy looking and growing well.

The rest of the market consists of the core of vendors from previous years namely, Ingleside Tomatoes, Swiss Farm Bakery, Avonmore Berry Farm, Coffey’s Coffee and Toi’s Thai Food. I don’t know what new vendors will appear next week or what the reorganization of the booths will be but whatever happens, I will be there to tell you about it.

Why don’t you come out to Long Sault on Friday afternoon and see for yourself? You can try a delicious spring roll from Toi’s Thai Food, a fresh baked pastry (gluten free or not), and enjoy a cup of fresh roasted coffee while you shop for some locally grown produce for your supper. The market is open from 2 PM to 6 PM in front of the Long Sault strip mall on County Rd 2. Just look for all the tents.
