CFN-Looking for something to do this long weekend? Celebrations are taking place across the region. We checked out one of them near Cornwall.
From trinkets to trains, from face painting to food, from entertainment to education, and from people to parade there is something for everyone at the Canada Day Celebrations taking place right now at the Lost Villages Museum, located just west of Cornwall on County Road #2.
The location is picturesque and inviting. The food and cool drinks are satisfying. The old fashioned country charm of neighbours and friends socializing outdoors on a warm summer day is perfect. An interesting twist is the large model train exhibit by Rudy Tabak. Rudy will also participate in the Seaway Train Show at the Long Sault Arena on July 21/22.
The celebrations continue until 4 p.m. today. At dusk, everyone is invited to Cornwall or Long Sault to enjoy the fireworks.
Canada Day celebrations are also well underway at Cornwall’s Lamoureux Park. A variety of entertainers are on hand as are food and beverage vendors. Bring the kids to the children’s area. A Canada Day free swim takes place at the Aquatic Centre from 2 to 3:25 p.m. today. Further details are available online.
UPDATE – The concensus is that the 2012 edition of the Cornwall Canada Day Fireworks display was the best show in many years. For about 15 minutes the crowd was treated to an almost non-stop spectacular. There was much cheering and applause.

Listening to Prime Minister Harper’s Canada Day speech today made my heart swell with pride! Well, maybe not. Actually, it made me want to hide in a cave.
Are we allowed to call it Dominion day-Did not our fine politicians change that for Canada day-1982 with 13 out of 288 votes.
Our form of democracy at work!
The switching or changing of a National holiday’s name impacts everyone living within the nation. Anything like this should be put to a referendum or a vote. silent majority 2 is right. Time to change this ‘parliamentary’ democracy up a bit. Perhaps we need to switch to a ‘Republic’?
How does everyone feel about this?
Canada is still a Dominion. Perhaps the Minister of Heritage should put a few dollars behind it. It seems that far too many people don’t know our real heritage, have forgotten it, or are trying to re-write it out of existence.
