CFN – PQ leader Pauline Marois bared her linguistic teeth promising voters that she’d visit Bill 101, the language law in Quebec, within 100 days of being elected.
Marois says the province’s landmark language law, Bill 101, needs to be updated to stop the decline of French in Montreal shops and businesses.
Marois says she would introduce legislation within her first 100 days in office that would close loopholes that make it possible for companies to operate in English.
She also plans to increase the number of language inspectors to monitor the presence of French on commercial signs.
Could you imagine if a politician in Alberta stated that reversing French for English? Ms Marois certainly is staking her ground…
What do you think Quebecers and Canadians? Is she completely out to lunch? Is Quebec?
For Quebec to potentially or actually vote in a benign fascist like Ms Marois and her PQ cohorts would be a huge statement for Quebec via its position in Canada…

Quebec already has restrictive French Language sign laws. If there were to be bilingual signs in Quebec, I for one, would probably drive to Montreal and perhaps further afield. But I won’t. I can only imagine how much tourism has been hurt by the sign laws, and making them more strict will not help anyone.
I even heard of a Quebec Maple-Syrup Producer that had to take down his English-only website, despite the fact that 99% of his sales were from the northern American states. Too much power is seldom a good thing.

Seriously, Pauline Marois doesn’t want you to let go of your language and speak French only. Nobody’s forcing you to speak French everywhere. But please, be humble enough not to think everybody in the world has to speak English just to accommodate you.
Quebec is French. Get over it and learn French, at least a bit. Not that hard.

The issue is not language, but the politics of language.
Because of the french vote in Québec and because the english vote is centralized, pauline is on her way to becoming the first elected female Québec premier. Is it what I want, nope, but Pauline Marois is far from being a stupid person. She has been in politics for decades, she wont even dare try and go for a referendum. At 28 %, the sovereignty vote is very low.
Jaimie the one time you were part of a minority in Québec you left. Although the pure laine attitude is frustrating, most Québecers are good people. You would chose to let the french language die while I would rather do anything I could to save it. Its part of our history, our culture, french is as much canadian as english.
Being unilingual anglo is not a sin. Jaimie you chose to be unilingual in a province that has more bilingual people then the rest of the country. And now you try and portray yourself a martyr. Patrick I do consider myself a martyr. What you don’t get is that Montreal is by far the largest community in Quebec and its heritage has a whole lot of English in it. So much so that in spite of 40 years of linguistic and cultural genocide you yourself worry about Montreal becoming Anglophone as though that were a sin or crime.
I chose to leave for many reason; mostly related to the politics and language of Quebec. Some people pick up languages better than others. I’m not gifted that way and frankly feel like I’m working under a handicap when forced to do so in French.
Also as an artist in Quebec you get treated differently when it comes to government grants that should be equal to all artists, French and English.
My last departure from Quebec was in 2004 when I moved to Cornwall as the woman I would eventually marry was a unilingual anglophone from BC and wanted nothing to do with Quebec.
Most Quebecers are good people, but good people have this habit of staying silent while bad people operate. It’s not unique to Quebec either. I don’t encourage anyone to think like me. I put ideas out for conversation. I would encourage people to research any concept they feel is important and come to their own conclusions.
Sadly most that actually will post about a subject rarely have an open mind about it which leads to some of these circular arguments that rarely ever get resolved….

Patrick I do not “dislike” the French language or French people. I simply am not gifted with it and feel like I’m at a handicap when I have to use it for work. Guarantee schools in french to french speaking individuals… But then again, why would you need an english bill 101, when the english language is No way being threatened at a 77 percent % majority.

Patrick at the end of the day it all comes down to the rules of the game. Right now the rules need to be changed and to be more fair to everyone; especially when it comes to jobs outside of Quebec.

Wait just a second there Xavier. You are comparing apples and oranges. Quebec my friend — IS NOT — a country and you have no right to compare the linguistic issues (re: signs and flags and so on) to a country as you did using France as an example. Provinces are just that, provinces and you must remember that the constitution applies to ALL of CANADA’S provinces, not just those provinces who choose to recognize it. It doesn’t work that way.
So, your argument is misguided when you compare the “province” of Quebec to a country. Further more; they SHOULD not be acting as a country until that becomes a reality. As far as that as possibility, as things stand right now, with their disrespect for the English people living there and for Canada in general, I for one sure hope that does become a reality.

What is frustrating is that there is an organization out there that promotes anti-french behavior. That by naming itself language fairness, it says it promotes fair hiring practices. Well what is in a name:
1) Its leader says she is bilingual but choses not to speak french.
2) Her right hand man is a self professed francophobe.
3) They even say that its a question of costs when the true cost is less then 1 % of the national budget.

I was insulted. Thank god other employees were there and at their suggestion they said I should complain to her superior. And I did. Her superior immediately switched her section and apologized her behalf. Went back yesterday, she no longer is an employee. Merci Costco.”

You might have heard about the department of native affairs ? There is allot being done for natives, language and promotion. Is it enough, NOPE. Should we do more to promote native culture and aboriginal studies, absolutely.

However, when one looks back historically (FLQ and various other French militant groups) and even in the present time (the student strikes and riots after Montreal Canadians wins etc etc), Quebecors (or should I more accurately say, the French) seem to have MORE of those, what “you” called, “real nutcases” on that side of things. I myself, generally speaking, would be more apt to just label them as radical hot blooded “followers” that attach themselves to a cause with the veracity of a pit bull attaching itself to the babysitters arm or head. There is something in the blood, in the fiber of the French (I know this because, being 50% French, I feel it in my blood as well) that makes one want to stand up and get in the face of someone who opposes something you hold dear. I hesitate to say it but, I admire this about them/myself and kinda would like to see the English grow a set of these cahoonas in order to stand up to the French because, you know what, on some level, I believe (if you take away the threat of cultural annexation as part of this) you might even secretly agree that the way the French are doing things is indeed unfair when one considers the numbers involved.

After all, can it really be fair that Quebec passes laws to diminish and restrict the English language to the degree they are doing which causes such grief to those English Canadian citizens who actually live in that “province.” A “province” which is still within their own country. The country of CANADA. And all this while at the very same time demanding the ROC accommodate them to the n’th degree outside of Quebec? Not to mention, doing things like opening French ONLY clinics in Ontario (somewhat of a slap in the face when one considers this is something that would NOT even be permitted in the “province” of Quebec at all) without ANYONE honestly shaking their head and saying, now wait just a second here. Something doesn’t compute. Or, as they used to say on Sesame Street. One of these is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong.

Maybe the REAL answer is as simple as… Let Quebec have the “Province” of Quebec as their own COUNTRY. Why not? Yes, let em have it. Then simply allow the ROC to go back to a state where it only has to provide French to a certain degree within the Federal government. You know, the way it was originally intended in the first place. The French could then move to Quebec where they would feel completely accepted, and all warm and fuzzy like. Oh, and of course, “welcomed” … PLUS, they would have all the French hospitals and French clinics they could ever want (if they could afford them, that is). Then the English would no longer resent the French and we could move forward as one big happy — “area”. There, problem solved. That was easy eh ?
