Breakfast With the Mayor
All South Stormont business owners are invited to join the Mayor on February 28 from 7:15 AM to 9:00 AM at the South Stormont Community Hall, 2 Mille Roches Road, Long Sault. More details forthcoming.
Town Hall Closure
The Township office will be closed on Monday, February 18 for Family Day and will re-open February 19 at 8:30 AM. Enjoy time with your family!
Garbage and Recycling
There will be NO CHANGE to your recycling or garbage pick-up due to the holiday. Please be reminded that residents may place a maximum limit of two (2) garbage bags/containers per week for curbside collection.
Household Hazardous Waste
The Hazardous Waste Site is closed for the winter season. 2013 dates are coming soon. In the interim, depending on the type of hazardous waste, there are different stewards/retailers in the area that accept waste. Home Depot will take back paint, batteries, CFI light bulbs; Habitat for Humanity will take batteries and e-waste, as well, Big Brother Big Sisters will take e-waste.

FIRE DEPARTMENT
Space heaters are a handy way to add a little extra warmth to one corner of the house without turning up the furnace. But space heaters can be a hazard if used improperly. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and these safety tips to stay safe and warm:

Never use fuel-burning portable space heaters.
-
Never use space heaters to dry flammable items such as clothing or blankets.
-
Keep all flammable objects at least one metre away from space heaters.
-
Use the right size extension cord, if necessary.
-
Never use an electrical space heater in a wet area or any area that can be exposed to water.
-
Only use space heaters that bear the mark of a recognized certification agency or regulatory body.
-
Never leave an operating space heater unattended and always turn off the space heaters.
-
Supervise children and pets at all times.
Winter Parking Requirements
Snow has greeted us… please park your vehicle in your driveway, well off the road, until street and sidewalk cleaning operations are complete. This allows our crews to do their job and make the streets and sidewalks safe for everyone. (Vehicles interfering with snow removal or blocking sidewalks may be ticketed at a cost of $40.00).
WINTER MAINTEANCE INFORMATION
Winter weather is still here. Your assistance during the winter season will help the Township of South Stormont Public Works Department provide efficient and effective winter maintenance. Please keep the following points in mind throughout the winter season:
-
Trucks with flashing blue lights are working to clear the snow. Please give them room to work and pass very carefully.
-
It may be less frustrating to wait until the plow trucks have completed their street before shoveling the end of your driveway.
-
Snow from the end of the driveway should be shoveled to the right, facing the street.
-
If you hire a contractor to plow your driveway, please remind them that pushing snow back into or across the street is prohibited. Doing so not only creates hazards for drivers, but also makes it difficult to keep the streets clean.
-
The Township’s mailbox policy states that the Public Works Department will only replace a mailbox if the post or box has a direct hit from the Township’s snowplow.
-
If your garbage and / or recycling pickup day coincide with plowing activities, make sure your trash can and recycling bins are behind the curb or in the driveway so the plow will not hit them.
Did you know that the average completion time for each plow route is six (6) hours? Some factors can that affect this approximate time include:
-
snowfall accumulation,
-
type of precipitation (i.e. freezing rain, wet snow or “just plain” snow), and/or
-
the time of day the precipitation occurs.
All concerns or requests relative to snow removal should be directed to the Town Hall at 613-534-8889, not the equipment operators.

Long Sault Firefighters Association Winter Carnival
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2013 AT THE LONG SAULT MARINA RESTAURANT
Organizers are currently planning a wide variety of winter carnival activities including relay races, rides and games for the entire family. The event will also play host to a twelve team pond hockey tournament with proceeds going towards the fundraising efforts of the Volunteer Firefighters Association. 6th Annual Lost Villages Ice Fishing Tournament
This fun tournament will take place on Saturday, February 23 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Hoople’s Bay in Ingleside. The tournament has become one of the area’s largest participated events. Registration is now open. Forms are available at Collette’s Ice Hut Rentals, The Boathouse Baitshop or the Long Sault Marina Restaurant.

The deadline to nominate a deserving recipient for the prestigious 2012 Fran Laflamme Volunteer of the Year award is February 1, 2013. For the purpose of this award, “a volunteer is recognized as an individual that willingly volunteers their time and efforts to provide support to the municipal Corporation and its citizens as a whole. The South Stormont Volunteer Recognition Program does not recognize individuals for personal or family related successes or professional achievement.”. AROUND TOWN
No Ice is 100 Percent Safe
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) remind
snowmobilers that no ice can be considered to be 100 percent safe to ride on a snowmobile.
To avoid unnecessary risks, the OPP and OFSC recommend that snowmobilers stick to available, land-based OFSC trails whenever possible. If you do make the choice to risk travelling on ice by snowmobile, wait until a marked stake line is in place and cross only when you can follow it directly from shore to shore, without stopping on the ice. While ice crossing is never a sure thing, snowmobilers can also reduce their risk by:
- Checking ice thickness and quality before riding onto any frozen water.
- Understanding that ice conditions may vary from day to day, from hour to hour and from place
to place.
- Never travelling on ice alone, at night or while impaired.
- Avoiding slushy ice, untracked ice, or ice near moving water or dock bubblers.
- Watching out for obstacles like rocks, stumps, docks, ice roads and fishing huts.
- Wearing a buoyant snowmobile suit and carrying ice picks.

Winter weekends at the Sanctuary start on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. and run every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from noon until 4:00 p.m. until March 31. The Visitor Centre is also open on Family Day, February 18. Moonlight ski and snowshoe events take place on Saturday January 26, February 23 and March 23 at 7:00 p.m.

FRAMED” FOR ACTS OF KINDNESS
Gestures of good will are grateful. During the Christmas season such was the case when an anonymous food donation was given to the Ingleside Fire Station No. 2.
Newington Fire Station No. 3 held a very successful boot drive on October 27, 2012 to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy. $1,576.50 was raised and this was matched by Scotiabank for a total of $3,153.00. Congratulations!
