Dog Tags

A dog tag sales agent is now selling dog tags and kennel licenses door-to-door in South Stormont. The individual has proper identification.  We ask for everyone’s full cooperation as a “tag” provides a means of locating your pet in the event it is lost.

Dog tags are also available for purchase at the Town Hall:

Fees: Intact Male or Female $20.00

Neutered Male or Spayed Female $15.00

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Statistics show that more than 40,000 seniors live in approximately 700 retirement homes in Ontario.  Add to that that there are approximately 400 long term facilities and another 3,000 plus homes for venerable residents and the challenge of ensuring their safety becomes a challenge for any type or size of fire department.  The government has enacted the Retirement Home Act; as of January 1, 2013, all retirement home operators are required by law to have safety plans for residents, including emergency planning in case of fire and other risks. The Retirement Home Act also requires that information about whether or not a retirement home has a fire sprinkler system is publicly available.    For additional information please visit the Ontario Fire Marshal web site.

Winter Parking Requirements

Snow has greeted us… please park your vehicle in your driveway, well off the road, until street and sidewalk cleaning operations are complete.  This allows our crews to do their job and make the streets and sidewalks safe for everyone. (Vehicles interfering with snow removal or blocking sidewalks may be ticketed at a cost of $40.00).

WINTER MAINTEANCE INFORMATION

Winter weather is still here. Your assistance during the winter season will help the Township of South Stormont Public Works Department provide efficient and effective winter maintenance. Please keep the following points in mind throughout the winter season:

  • Trucks with flashing blue lights are working to clear the snow. Please give them room to work and pass very carefully.

  • It may be less frustrating to wait until the plow trucks have completed their street before shoveling the end of your driveway.

  • Snow from the end of the driveway should be shoveled to the right, facing the street.

  • If you hire a contractor to plow your driveway, please remind them that pushing snow back into or across the street is prohibited. Doing so not only creates hazards for drivers, but also makes it difficult to keep the streets clean.

  • The Township’s mailbox policy states that the Public Works Department will only replace a mailbox if the post or box has a direct hit from the Township’s snowplow.

  • If your garbage and / or recycling pickup day coincide with plowing activities, make sure your trash can and recycling bins are behind the curb or in the driveway so that it avoids the plow.

Did you know that the average completion time for each plow route is six (6) hours? Some factors that can affect this approximate time include:

  • snowfall accumulation,

  • type of precipitation (i.e. freezing rain, wet snow or “just plain” snow), and/or

  • the time of day the precipitation occurs.

All concerns or requests relative to snow removal should be directed to the Town Hall at 613-534-8889, please allow our equipment operators to do their job.

Get a Grip on Snow and Ice

While salt can make winter safer, it’s only part of the answer. Do your part. Protect yourself from slips and falls.

  1. Wear sturdy footwear designed for snow and ice to help protect yourself from slips and falls. Boots should have a good tread for traction with low, wide heels.
  2. Put snow tires on your car. Slow down on the road. Give yourself extra time to arrive at your destination. Drive for the conditions and make sure you give plow drivers plenty of space to do their work.
  3. Use a traction aid like kitty litter or sand to reduce the potential to slip.  For more information please visit www.smartaboutsalt.com/getagrip
