SD&G County Library Celebrates Children’s Book Week with Storyteller Cassy Welburn Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Cassy_WelburnIn celebration of TD Canadian Children’s Book Week, the SD&G County Library will be hosting two public performances by children’s storyteller Cassy Welburn at the Ingleside and Chesterville branches on May 7.

.

The Library is also partnering with Maxville Public School for a third event on the same day at the school, thanks to the TD Adopt-A-School Program.

Cassy Welburn is a Calgary poet and storyteller with a theatre background. She has been telling stories across Canada, the U.K. and Australia for over 25 years.

.

She specializes in literary tales, such as Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream and One Thousand and One Nights, and brings the classics to life! Ms. Welburn enjoys weaving poetry or song into the stories and encourages audience involvement.

“A storyteller visit is like going backstage at a play – a chance for young people to catch a glimpse of the creative process. By using language enhanced by voice, movement, and music, Cassy can take listeners on a unique journey”, explained Erika Heesen, Communications and Marketing Librarian. “It’s a magical experience for kids, and inspires them to try writing their own books or performing their own stories”.

TD Canadian Children’s Book Week is the single most important national event celebrating Canadian children’s books and the importance of reading. Each May, close to 35,000 children, teens and adults participate in activities held in every province and territory across the country. Hundreds of schools, public libraries, bookstores and community centres host events as part of this major literary festival. For more information, visit www.bookweek.ca.

The SD&G County Library thanks the Canada Council for the Arts for sponsoring Cassy Welburn’s visit.  Ms. Welburn will be at the Ingleside branch of the SD&G County Library on Tuesday, May 7 from 9:00-10:00am, and at the Chesterville branch on Tuesday, May 7 from 6:00-7:00pm.
