CFN – Liz Leduc was peddling her bike all over Cornwall this weekend getting people to sign the petition to ask the City of Cornwall to stop adding fluoride to its drinking water.
Fluoride Free Cornwall will be gathering signatures for a petition to end water fluoridation outside of city hall (360 Pitt), on Monday, September 9th, 2013 @ 6:15pm.
PETITION TO END WATER FLUORIDATION- CORNWALL, ONTARIO
Water fluoridation is the addition of hydrofluorosilicic acid to the public water supply with intent to medicate the public for tooth decay. As per section 7 of The Charter of Rights and Freedoms,
“Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.”
Water fluoridation violates an individual’s right to liberty. Fluoride Free Cornwall is asking the city to end this unethical practice.

It should be a busy night of protesting as River King fans will also be front and centre hoping to get Mayor Bob Kilger to end the impasse between the Cornwall Colts and River Kings over the use of the Civic Complex which puts the future of the River Kings in doubt.

It is illegal for a doctor or a dentist to force anyone to take a drug or a chemical.
It should be illegal for the government as well, particularly for fluoride which is more poisonous than LEAD and only slightly less poisonous than ARSENIC. It has never been approved by the FDA as safe or effective.
The public water supply should never have been used to deliver a drug. Once added to the water you cannot control the dose, you cannot control who gets the medicine, no doctor is checking side effects such as individual susceptibly, it is taken for life in every glass of water and it violates individual’s right to informed consent.
Medical professionals should be ashamed to support such a crude and unethical practice which results in cancer, thyroid & pineal gland damage, broken hips from brittle bones, lowered IQ, kidney disease, arthritis and other serious health problems.

I don’t see how fluoridation violates an individuals right to liberty. If you do not wish to drink fluoridated water use a filter on your tap or drink questionable bottled water instead. Exercise your right to utilize a little common sense. For example if you do not like a particular radio show or television program, turn the channel or turn it off.
Would you expect that vehicles be banned completely on the grounds that the pollution generated by combustion engines is poisoning the air you breathe and thus violating your right to liberty?
Please think this through properly before you jump on the knee jerk band wagon. Some 40 states and the majority of Canadian cities fluoridate the drinking water. Quite obviously the majority believe that the benefit outweighs any possible side effects. Regardless of this reality the choice is still yours, your rights are not being violated. Use a filter and brush your teeth with baking soda instead of coming off as an extremist.
There was a successful constitutional challenge to forcible medication, in the Ontario Superior Court and upheld by the Supreme Court. The ruling upheld that a patient has the right to refuse medication and that medical personnel can be legally restrained from forcibly medicating people. Councillors in many cities that ended fluoridation recognized that the municipality has no legal authority to forcibly medicate its citizens without their permission.
Unfortunately we’re dealing with old paternalistic attitudes in Cornwall, where several members of council disregard that they may not have the authority to forcibly medicate the citizens. Most of the presentation of the head of the EOHU was debunked and refuted at other centres that ended fluoridation . . . so the question begs to be asked as to whether some members of council trying to protect his credibility.
Proponents of fluoridation are somehow trying to convince gullible councils that they allegedly have the authority to forcibly ram medication down the throats of their citizens . . . . which according to a constitutional ruling, they do not . . . neither does any physician.

In 2010 the region of Waterloo held a referendum on the use of fluoride in the water supply.
There is really no good reason why at the time of the next municipal election the voters could not democratically decide by indicating yes or no to a question on the ballot concerning fluoridation of Cornwall’s water supply. Speak to your councilor of choice. Lobby, lobby, lobby.
When the City of Calgary held their fluoride hearings, they refused to allow medical people to address the meetings . . . . the only issue that they were willing to hear was the issue of compulsory medication of an entire population, citing an already established Canadian legal precedent that involved a patient who petitioned the courts to uphold their right to refuse medication.
I would advise David Oldham that most of Europe has discontinued adding fluoride to municipal drinking water . . . Vancouver has never added fluoride and records the exact same percentage of childhood dental caries (cavities) as does Toronto that does add fluoride.
I would also challenge David’s claim that the majority of Canadian cities fluoridate . . . the numbers are dropping. Quebec is about 98% free from fluoride, as is British Columbia. Cities in Australia and New Zealand are also discontinuing municipal water fluoridation.
While there may be great benefit to people taking supplements such as Vitamins B. C, D3, natural E and numerous minerals such as calcium, boron, magnesium, selenium, chromium, manganese, zinc and a few others . . . . . the municipal water system in NOT the medium by which to distribute medical products.
The compound called hydrofluorosilicic acid is not even an approved medication . . . it and sodium fluoride are both industrial by-products, one from the aluminium industry and the other from the fertilizer industry.
If we believe what David Oldham says about our rights vis-a-vis flouridation, then in the same context non-smokers should just stop breathing so they don’t inhale other peoples smoke!
David, I have lobbied over the years and I have spoken to each council member. They just do not want to listen. As far as we have choices? The lower income families do not have money for a filter that filters fluoride also. These machines are expensive. And why should families have these expenses when it does not have to happen in the first place? There is medical fluoride in your tooth paste that is all that is needed.
Stan, second hand smoke does little damage to what fluoride does. We are well protected against 2nd hand smoke. That why it is banned pretty near everywhere accept on a sidewalk
The time to lobby to remove fluoride from Cornwall drinking water, would be during the weeks and months prior to the next municipal election. Candidates and incumbents need to be shown transcripts of the Ontario court case that upheld a persons right NOT to be forcibly medicated. The head of the EOHU knows full well that he has no legal authority to forcibly administer medication . . . and the elected council has NO power of attorney to be making health care decisions for an entire population.
Diane Marshall and Liz Leduc, when the incumbents are on the re-election campaign trail . . . that is the time to let citizens know which incumbents disregarded their legal right to freedom from forcible medication . . . turn that paternalistic behaviour into an election issue.

Personally I am not concerned by fluoridation of our water. I can buy water from other sources if I so choose.
What I am concerned about are individual rights and freedoms and democracy.
DIANE MARSHALL it is not the councilors that will make the option for change available it is the citizens of Cornwall themselves. The councilors will fence sit or simply nod on the issue with ultimately no result. If however you inspire a handful of influential or motivated citizens that can and will deliver enough signatures to democratically require the question on the next municipal ballot then you will be half way successful. Whether a majority would support the motion to ban the addition of fluoride to the water supply is a variable not easily predicted. One thing is for sure Diane and that is, simply, that should the question appear on the ballot then democracy is being supported.
