Cornwall, ON – The Cornwall Community Police would like to warn the public of a possible scam involving tax credit to certain individuals. E-mails are sent requesting that you complete a form including social insurance number and your date of birth. If you receive an e-mail indicating you are eligible for such a credit, confirm you are on a secure legitimate site or seek advice before replying. Remember fraudsters go through a lot of work to make their scams look real. Always be aware of identity theft and take precautions not to be a victim.
DOMESTIC ASSAULT, FORCIBLE CONFINEMENT
Cornwall, ON – A 32-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on November 21st, 2013 and charged with assault. It is alleged that in the early hours of November 21st, 2013 the man was involved in a verbal argument with his 38-year-old girlfriend when he spat in her face. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation the man was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Cornwall, ON – An 18-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on November 21st, 2013 and charged with forcible confinement, assault and theft. It is alleged that on November 13th, 2013 the man locked his 16-year-old girlfriend in the washroom for a period of time. On November 21st, 2013 the man attended her school and a verbal argument ensued. During the argument the man refused to return a ring to her and pushed her out of his car. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation they located the man at his residence, took him into custody and charged him accordingly. He was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Cornwall, ON – A 19-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on November 21st, 2013 and charged with criminal harassment. It is alleged that between November 20th, 2013 and November 21st, 2013 the man communicated with his ex-girlfriend on several occasions and stopped by her address despite not being welcomed. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On November 21st, 2013 police located the man at his residence, took him into custody and charged him accordingly. He was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
BREACH
Cornwall, ON – Heather Thompson, 39 of Akwesasne was arrested on November 21st, 2013 and charged with failing to appear for prints. It is alleged that the woman failed to attend for prints on November 8th, 2013. On November 21st, 2013 the woman attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. She was taken into custody, charged accordingly and transported to courts for a bail hearing.
Cornwall, ON – Kellen Thompson, 29 of Cornwall was arrested on November 21st, 2013 and charged for failing to attend for prints. It is alleged that on November 7th, 2013 the man failed to attend police headquarters for prints. On November 21st, 2013 police located the man at his residence, took him into custody and charged him accordingly. The man was then held for a bail hearing.
Cornwall, ON – A 52-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on November 22nd, 2013 and charged with breaching a recognizance for having communicated with someone he is not allowed to. It is alleged that in the early morning hours of November 22nd, 2013 police were called to attend a York Street address in relation to a disturbance. Once on scene police located the man in the company of a woman that he was on conditions not to contact. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the woman involved.
THREATS
Cornwall, ON – A second 16-year-old Cornwall youth was arrested on November 21st, 2013 and charged with threats. It is alleged that he was with the youth that was arrested for the incident that occurred on September 27th, 2013 where children were threatened in a school yard while youths were walking by. On November 21st, 2013 the youth attended police headquarters with a parent to deal with the matter. The youth was arrested, charged accordingly and released to appear in court on December 9th, 2013. His name was not released as per provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Cornwall, ON – A 37-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on November 21st, 2013 and charged with two counts of threats to life and one count of assault. It is alleged that on November 21st, 2013 the while at the Cornwall Square the man threatened to kill his 35-year-old ex-girlfriend and another man. He also took the man`s glasses and damaged them. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation they located the man at a First Street West address, took him into custody and charged him accordingly. He was later released with a court date of December 19th, 2013. His name was not released as it might identify the victims in the matter.

Cornwall, ON – Peter Laxton, 36 of Cornwall was arrested on November 22nd, 2013 and charged with
- Possession of stolen property
- Breach of probation for failing to keep the peace
- Mischief
- Obstruct police
- Personation
- Possession of break in tool
It is alleged that in the early morning hours of November 22nd, 2013 the man had broke the rear windows of four vehicles parked on Glengarry Boulevard. Police were contacted and located the man sitting in one of the vehicles and to be in possession of break in tools. The man who was taken into custody falsely identified himself and upon his arrest was found to be in possession of stolen property. He was transported to police headquarters, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

The Toronto Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance identifying a man in a robbery investigation.
It is alleged that:
– on Friday, June 14, 2013, a man committed a robbery at 305 Port Union Road
– on Sunday, September 15, 2013, the same man committed a robbery at 1723 Victoria Park Avenue
– on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, the same man committed a robbery at 1309 Lawrence Avenue East
– each time he displayed a black handgun and demanded cash from the store’s attendant
He is described as black, mid-20s, 5’5″-5’8″.

Public Safety Alert, Break-and-enters targeting second storeys

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a number of break-and-enters.
It is reported that:
– during November 2013, several homes were broken into in the area bounded by Lawrence Avenue West to the north, St.Clair Avenue West to the south, Bathurst Street to the west, and Avenue Road to the east
– access was gained via a second-storey window
– in some instances, the window was left open or unlocked
– homes both with and without security cameras were broken into
The offences are very similar to a number of break-and-enters last year in the same area during the holiday season.
Police are reminding people to remain vigilant and secure all doors and windows, including those on upper storeys.
Two men face 10 charges in armed robbery investigation

On Sunday, November 17, 2013, at 9:15 p.m., police responded to a robbery call at a convienence store on Ellesmere Road .
It is alleged that:
– two men, covering their faces, entered the store and began assaulting and making demands of the store employee
– one of the men was armed with a knife
– a struggle ensued and a second employee came to the employee’s assistance and became involved in the struggle
– the two suspects fled the store, leaving both employees suffering non-life-threatening injuries
On Wednesday, November 20, 2013, Corey Kawal, 18, and Sanjay Turner, 18, both of Toronto, were arrested and investigated by the Hold Up Squad, assisted by 41 and 42 Division.
They have each been charged with:
1. two counts of Robbery
2. Wear Disguise
3. Weapons Dangerous
4. Aggravated Assault
They appeared in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at 10 a.m.

Mississauga (21 November, 2013) — The Acting Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Joseph Martino, has concluded that there are no reasonable grounds to charge any Hamilton Police Service officer with a criminal offence in relation to the injuries sustained by two men in September of 2013.
The SIU assigned three investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances of this incident. As part of the investigation, one witness officer and seven civilian witnesses were interviewed. Both subject officers consented to an interview with the SIU and submitted a copy of their duty notes.
The SIU investigation found that the following events took place on Saturday, September 7, 2013:
• At approximately 10:30 p.m., one of the subject officers was on patrol in a marked cruiser when he observed a Honda disobeying a stop sign and squealing its tires in the area of Hess Street North and Napier Street. The officer began to follow the vehicle, and then activated his emergency equipment and pursued it when it again disregarded a stop sign turning right from Napier Street onto southbound Caroline Street North. The 33-year-old Honda driver temporarily stopped his vehicle before accelerating away, with the officer still in pursuit.
• The pursuit continued eastbound on Main Street West where it was joined by the second subject officer. The first officer overtook the Honda and slowed in front of it, forcing it to stop. The officer exited his cruiser and rushed toward the Honda, but the man reversed quickly and resumed his flight southbound on McNab Street South. The second officer was now the lead car in pursuit. The first officer returned to his vehicle and resumed his pursuit, but he had since lost sight of the Honda and the other cruiser.
• Shortly after, both officers terminated the pursuit after receiving instructions from a supervisor.
• Meanwhile, the Honda driver continued to drive southbound on Hess Street, blew a stop sign and collided with a Kia traveling eastbound on Herkimer Street. The impact caused the Kia to careen into a bus shelter on the southeast corner of the intersection. A bystander in the area of the shelter, 50-year-old Stephen Hayes, suffered serious injury in the process.
• The driver of the Honda suffered serious head and neck injuries.
Acting Director Martino said, “I am satisfied on reasonable grounds that the officers’ conduct throughout this chain of events did not transgress the criminal law. Put differently, there is nothing in the officers’ conduct that approaches a marked departure from the level of care that a reasonable person would have exercised in the circumstance – the key criminal liability test in these cases. Each officer had his emergency lights on during the pursuit. They exceeded the speed limit at points, but officers are entitled to speed in the discharge of their duty. It should also be noted that their top speeds of low to mid-70 km/h were far from extreme, particularly when one considers the small amount of traffic on the road at the time in question. The pursuit itself was relatively moderate in duration and distance. As well, it was promptly terminated as soon as a supervisor, monitoring the pursuit from the station, determined that public safety considerations had tipped the balance in favour of discontinuing the pursuit. While the officers may have prompted or fueled the reckless driving of the Honda driver as he attempted to escape police custody, they gave him a reasonable opportunity to desist, particularly as the pursuit moved southbound down Hess Street. The Honda driver alone is to blame for causing himself and an innocent bystander serious bodily harm in the collision that ensued.”
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
- report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.

Ottawa Police investigating similar fact residential Break-Ins

(Ottawa)— The Ottawa Police Service Break & Enter Team is warning the public of a series of residential break-ins that have occurred over the past three weeks across the city. A total of nine break-ins have occurred in the daytime and involve forced entry into secure homes.
The suspect(s) is targeting the homes of persons of Asian descent with the goal of getting high-end jewellry and accessories such as handbags.
In some cases, safes were defeated to gain access to them and steal the contents. Ottawa Police would like to urge the public who may have valuable jewellery and/or gold bars and coins to consider placing these items in a safety deposit box and not keep these items in their home.
There are no suspects at this time.

Investigation continues into fatal collision on 8th Line

(Ottawa)—The Ottawa Police Service Collision Investigation Unit is continuing its investigation into the fatal head-on collision that occurred at approx. 3:35pm on Sunday, November 17, 2013 where a 32-year-old off-duty officer died on 8th Line Road near Parkway Road.
The 29-year-old female driver of the other vehicle remains in hospital in stable condition and her 7-year-old child has been released from hospital on Monday.
