Motor Vehicle Collisions Increase as Winter Weather Arrives

Kingston Police responded to 17 motor vehicle collisions on November 19 and six by 10:00 a.m. on November 20. Motorists are reminded to adjust their driving behaviour dependent on weather conditions. Some additional tips are:

  • Due to slower average speeds during the winter provide extra time to arrive at your destination.
  • Create extra distance between vehicles to allow for longer stopping.
  • When safe to do so, on a straight stretch of road and with no additional traffic around you, evenly apply the brakes to test for icy conditions on the highway. Knowing how slippery the roads are before an emergency situation arises can make the difference between making it to your destination safely and finding yourself in a ditch.
  • Check for proper tire pressure and install winter tires if purchased. Once temperatures fall below 7 degrees Celsius the rubber compound on all-season tires become rigid and lose proper grip.
  • Fully clear snow and ice from vehicle windows, mirrors, lights and roofs. This not only provides a clear view for the driver but reduces risk of snow and ice dislodging during driving and creating a hazard for other motorists.
  • Keep warm clothing and pack a Winter Survival Kit, which should include a flashlight, a small shovel, blankets, candles and non-perishable energy foods. Jumper cables and a tow rope can also be useful.
  • Try to maintain a full tank of gas. It helps reduce moisture in the fuel system, adds additional weight to the vehicle and will come in handy if you become stuck in traffic due to weather conditions.
  • Use the Ministry of Transportation’s “Traveler’s Road Information Line” by dialing 511 or by going to www.ontario.ca/trip. It will provide up to date information on provincially-maintained highways.
  • Do not call police or 9-1-1 to receive traffic or weather updates. If using Twitter please follow updates from such accounts as @KingstonPolice, @OPP_COMM_ER, @OPP_ER, @YGKTraffic and @511Ontario. Just be sure to check these before getting behind the wheel and driving.
