CORNWALL Ontario – Freezing rain led to trees falling on wires and a power outage in Cornwall early this morning.
Power was off for as long as one hour as some residents took to social media asking if this was another Ice Storm.
The weather is playing havoc as rain is freezing to trees currently and surfaces.
With temperatures expected to drastically fall tonight more freezing effects are expected.
Power has been returned to most residents and Cornwall Electric was not very helpful with information.

Yes one hour for Cornwall most of the afternoon for my brothers home east of boundary road. Country folks fill your bathtub with water in case the power goes out again and u need to flush toilets

They at least had some information while I couldn’t find anything but taped songs on local radio stations and the “major” newspaper must be closed till tonight
Power goes out during storms. Is it a surprise it happened today?

The power goes out several times a year where I live, sometimes for days at a time. Got a small 2500 watt generator to run freezers, fridge, lights, computers, and such. We heat with wood only, so that’s no problem at all. Being totally dependent on hydro power for the necessities of life is pretty risky, especially in our climate.
Don’t know who is to blame for the public not being informed. Did Cornwall Electric “forget” to inform the media outlets? Or did the media outlets not have anyone monitoring their in boxes?
Melman steered everyone right about filling the bathtub with water to flush your toilet even here in cities because when the power goes out it affects the water system as well especially in these high rise buildings. Another thing is if I had a house the first thing I would get is a generator like Furtz mentioned. Furtz when we had our house we lived off the wood stove and through potatoes in there and lived on that for a week back in 98. It is good to have a fireplace or a woodstove as a backup. Good for you that you heat with wood.
I had to call CE for what little info I was given.
Backup generators are good. If you choose to run them through you electrical panel they have to be connected by qualified people. Otherwise you can do some major damage.
It might be that there were no administration people in to do up a notice for the various media.
Yes Hugger genrators have to be installed properly by an electrician or else very bad things can happen but I can tell you that it helped a lot of people during the 98 ice storm. Not everyone is savvy about running a woodstove or a fireplace but my husband and I lived in our youth with that kind of heating and cooking. For others who have never lived under those conditions then a generator becomes a necessity. Yes only installed by a qualified electrician.
